Time for a contest! Remember our discussion about the quote from Howl's Moving Castle that's in both The Thief and King of Attolia? And the ring from Eagle of the Ninth that shows up on Gen's thumb in The Thief?

Megan asked me to post this for all.

Have you found the Rosemary Sutcliff quote in King of Attolia?

She gave us one hint and a great motivator:

"not eagle of the ninth. tell fabricalchemist
to start looking. i'll send a signed copy of the king to the
first person who finds it."

Edit: Find the exact quote and post it here. No emails!

Pull out your Sutcliffs and read!

If I find it by cheating I will share the relenquish the glory to the person who found it quite properly. :)

Okay. Nobody?

It's Mark of the Horse Lord. The part where Gen gets attacked by the assasins, and he rests his head on Attolia's shoulder and kisses her and gets blood on her cheek. It's taken from chapter 15.

I swear to you I flipped the book open, and Costis goes "Oh, did you find it?"

"Haha! No! But wouldn't that be cool--OHmygod" XD

But thats what I think it is.

You doubting Thomasina! You dare question the Bear?

"...she was kneeling beside him and holding him as he leaned against her with his broken and bloody face in the hollow of her shoulder. The world steadied again, and he pulled his head up with a great effort, leaving dark stains on the shoulder of the boy's tunic she wore. And then a thing happened that seemed surprising afterward, but at teh time did not surprise him any more than finding her there had done. She took his ruined face between her hands and kissed him. And this time she did not feel for his dagger afterwards.

He mumbled thickly, 'Now you have blood on your face as well.'

'It will wash off with the war paint,' she said."

I thought maybe it wasn't so much of a word-for-word quote...maybe it's not the one? I mean, the ring wasn't a word-for-word quote....

close, no cigar

it's a word for word quote. keep looking. although that's definitely an honorable mention. funny, I didn't have that scene in the horse lord in mind when I wrote Gen and Attolia. (unintentional and unconscious heh, heh.) I don't know if it was in my head when I first constructed the scene, and then I forgot over six years, or if the trope of the wounded hero getting his kiss is just so common that there's eighty other examples out there. someone, somewhere said that my story was clearly heavily influenced by CS Lewis book (not narnia, not peralandra, what else is there?) that I have never read. too weird.

I thought it was _Mark of the Horse Lord_ too, but as I don't have my Sutcliff with me, I can't look it up. I thought Costis' thoughts in his jail cell about "two inches in the right place were all it took" reminded me of a similar situation at the end of Horse Lord. I wouldn't want to say any more though, since _Mark of the Horse Lord_ is one of my favorite books, and it should not be read spoiled (gee, wonder who that reminds me of?) Anyway, it's probably not a word-for-word quote.
