megan's challenge
May. 16th, 2006 04:50 pmTime for a contest! Remember our discussion about the quote from Howl's Moving Castle that's in both The Thief and King of Attolia? And the ring from Eagle of the Ninth that shows up on Gen's thumb in The Thief?
Megan asked me to post this for all.
Have you found the Rosemary Sutcliff quote in King of Attolia?
She gave us one hint and a great motivator:
"not eagle of the ninth. tell fabricalchemist
to start looking. i'll send a signed copy of the king to the
first person who finds it."
Edit: Find the exact quote and post it here. No emails!
Pull out your Sutcliffs and read!

Date: 5/16/06 11:48 pm (UTC)It's Mark of the Horse Lord. The part where Gen gets attacked by the assasins, and he rests his head on Attolia's shoulder and kisses her and gets blood on her cheek. It's taken from chapter 15.
I swear to you I flipped the book open, and Costis goes "Oh, did you find it?"
"Haha! No! But wouldn't that be cool--OHmygod" XD
But thats what I think it is.

Date: 5/19/06 12:05 pm (UTC)I'm starting to notice similarities between Sutcliff's various books too now. I'm sure I've read the "two inches in the right place is all it takes" phase used in more than one of her books.
The thing is, there's so many sentances that could have been paraphrased, but I haven't found any other real possible word for word quotes.
WHOA! My bad!
Date: 5/19/06 05:24 pm (UTC)the sutcliff. Hmm. I'm not sure how to do this fairly. I definitely owe fabricalchemist a signed
paperback as an honorable mention, and I think that telling you what I changed will make it
easy for the first person who reads the post to get the prize. what to do? shall I post the hint
at a previously announced time to make it fair?

Date: 5/21/06 05:01 pm (UTC)have a signed copy of The King. Does that work well? I want everyone to have time to read
this heads-up. I could post it today at 5:00 if you guys think that is enough lead time.
Queen Ro? I defer to you.

Re: 5:00 EST on MONDAY?

do i need to pacify grumpy fans for a poorly thought out contest?
Re: quote corrections
Date: 5/22/06 09:30 pm (UTC):( I still don't get it.
But the mailing costs of a book to the UK would be awful anyway. :) Anyone else got it? *goes to try to hunt down a sentance with an a reference to an item including measurements*

This fan is already perfectly happy with actually talking to the author of the book in question. :)

Date: 11/16/07 03:54 pm (UTC)It's the same line in both books. "What a lie that was."
Howl says it when he comes home drunk after the rugby get-together.
Gen says it in Thief after he tells the lady innkeeper that prison wasn't so bad. He says it in King when he and Attolia are discussing where Sophos might be and why Eddis didn't marry Gen, and she bats her eyes and says, "You've always been kind to me," with teh flirtiness.
Thanks! Also - another allusion?
