"Yes, and MWT keeps me wanting MORE! Even minor characters barely
mentioned! For example, Gen says in The Thief that he has two brothers,
one a soldier, one a watchmaker. What happened to them? Where were they
during Gen's tumultuous years in court being beaten up by all his cousins?
Where is the soldier brother during the events of the second book? What
about his married sisters? Is Gen an uncle yet? Does he like his nieces
and nephews? What about his brothers-in-law? Does he like them?"

This last bit from the review that dh684 suggested made me realize how little we know about Gen's family. Does anyone know anything about his siblings?

Something that always made me curious was that part in the Thief when Gen says something like, ""My sisters are even married, and honest housewives to boot." At least they were mostly honest." So did they inherit their mother's pilfering tendencies, even though she was never the Queen's Thief, or what? And do you think the other brother had as much of a hard time getting out of soldiering as Gen did?

I guess this is where fanfiction steps in. :) There are quite a lot of opportunities for fanfiction in MWT's work, in terms of possible plotlines and characters.

There's a great pdf file that Fabricalchemist uploaded when this comm first started that shows a disney article with a short story by MWT, depicting Gen as a ten year old. His brother Sten the watchmaker features, along with some of his cousins. I'd be happy to upload it for you to see. :)

I agree though, I am curious about his married sisters, and neices and nephews. :) Willow's quotation from the thief really makes you want to know more about his family.

Argh! I never read that! ((There's a Gen story I haven't read??? *sniffle*)) Rowana, mind uploading it? Gen is my favorite YA book character and him as a ten year old is just... adorable...

Thank you thank you thank you! What a great job you've done with this site! I've just spent a 6 hour shift "at work" following various threads, then came home and logged back on. I'm so new at chatrooms I keep getting muddled, but this site has me inspired to persevere. I hope I can find the link when you post it.

I love your icon!

From the Disney Adventures story, it sounds like Stenides was well liked, well respected, and didn't have much trouble getting away from the soliderly life. Gen just makes trouble for himself. I'm guessing maybe his sisters didn't stay at court after they married (moved to an estate perhaps?) or maybe, like Sten, they intervened for Gen a few times, but he got into so much trouble, and sometimes the anger of his cousins was justified, that they perhaps got tired of defending him. Something at the beginning of QofA about Eddis thinking that she hadn't sided with him in his battles with the cousins because it was always obvious he wasn't really an innocent victim.

There was also something in QofA about the Thief title might go to one of Gen's nephews since it's now a hereditary title. I think Attolia mentions this to the Mede when he asks about "archane rituals" after interrupting her and Relius.

I think Megan said that Gen would be the last thief somewhere, though.

That seems to make sense, I'd agree. Maybe his sisters did stay at court but if the whole court is your family in one way or another, I'm guessing family dynamics don't feature as prominently as political dynamics, or perhaps both are bound up together. I'm not sure. Why d'you think Megan largely leaves Gen's family (other than his father and Eddis) out of the story?

Yes I know :). I meant, the scene where Attolia is musing on that is the only time we hear that Gen's sisters have children.

As much as I liked Sten and would like to see more of Gen's family, I have to admit they are sort of superfluous to the story line as it stands. Eddis being the queen and Eugenides's father being the Minister of War factor in, especially in QofA, but the rest of his family really doesn't. I guess I would like to see another short story that featured his relationship to some of his other siblings, probably set in the past. I've always wondered what his relationship with this other brother and his sisters was like if Sten was his "favorite" sibling ;).

:) Sorry, good point.

Sten certainly seemed to be close to Gen in the disney article. I've wondered about gen's soldier brother, and his mostly honest sisters. :) But you're right, they aren't essential to the plot.
