...occurred to me while I was rereading QoA this week.  Probably some of you have noticed this before, but I hadn't, and I thought I'd share.  It concerns this passage, after Eugenides' plot to capture Attolia has been forcefully interrupted by Nahuseresh:

"As he opened his mouth to say more, Nahuseresh reached the queen's shoulder, and the queen struck again, this time boxing Eugenides' ear hard with her cupped hand.  Eugenides staggered, slipped on the slick ground, and fell backward onto his bound arms...She hoped the fall would shut him up but considered kicking him to be sure." (301)

This moment has always bothered me a little.  Of course, we know that Attolia is liable to hit Gen when she's angry (KoA, anyone?).  No doubt that's most of her motivation.  BUT (the revelation at last) throughout this sequence, one of Attolia's purposes is to keep Nahuseresh in the dark about her potential alliance with Eddis.  (We see this later when Nahuseresh is talking to her about Moira alerting him to Gen's "goal," the Pricas Spring, and Attolia snaps, "His goal?"--worried, I think, that he's guessed.)

So while she is angry and lashes out, her hitting Gen at this point also serves a political purpose: keeping him quiet so that Nahuseresh doesn't guess what he had been trying to do.

Any thoughts?

More proof, not that we needed it, of how rich these books are, furnishing new thoughts every time.

Oh, good thoughts! I was just re-reading the whole series and that moment bothered me as well. But I think you're right. Very nice.

Also, this is right after he's whispered to her something about how Nahuseresh ruling her country, and will she believe him when he says he loves her. She is afraid Gen's going to start in about his plans to marry her and how he loves her and how he wouldn't have taken her sovereignty away -- and since I personally think she decided to marry Gen the second Nahuseresh showed up, she's particularly anxious that the subject not come up in front of him.

I also think she's not used to people teasing her in front of other people.

Gen just meant to make a point about how she's been treated in the past, but she might take it as him trying to hurt her in his devious, theif-y way. She is used to being in charge of situations, and since she is considering marriage, she wants to show him that she is still in control, no matter what he says. And of course, it's an act to keep the Mede from comprehending what's really happening.

I agree with this. I always got the impression from that scene that she was hitting him to shut him up, not from anger. She hits him just as Nahuseresh reaches them and 'She hoped the fall would shut him up but considered kicking him to be sure' implying that the intention of hitting him was to make him shut up, rather than because she was angry as such. Also 'She had no desire to hear him protesting his undying love, but he was so very stubborn when you finally got down to some substance under all the lies'. She isn't angry at him for lying. She wants him to shut up because he isn't lying and she doesn't want Nahuseresh to hear. I doubt there would be any mention of 'substance under all the lies' if she was just angry. She likes time to think about things and make plans before all the cards are out for everyone to see. She doesn't want Gen blathering on about how he loves her before she's had time to give it private thought and decide how to respond without the game being given away already, because it would cut down on her options. If Nauseresh knows that Gen loves her, and that he has told her that, then there is no way that the plan she comes up with would have worked. It relies on him not knowing that there is anything other than animosity between them. That's how I always interpreted it anyway. :)

Whew, sorry about the lack of paragraphs in that last post. I didn't realise how horrible it was to read until after I posted it.

Agreed--and, although I am totally lacking in knowledge about hitting people, wouldn't hitting someone with a cupped hand knock someone over, and probably hurt, but not cause nearly as much pain/injury as a fist would?

Seems like it... but then I've never hit anyone. 0_o

This part bothered me, too, when I first read it. It took awhile for me to figure out that part about "she had no desire..." but you've stated it very clearly here, that she was wondering whether this declaration was, indeed, "substance under all the lies." She couldn't be sure. She didn't know what to believe at this point, but I think she thought that *maybe* what he said was true, and she certainly hoped it was. Even if she hadn't yet realized she loved him, she most likely wanted him loving her, to control him if nothing else.

Gah, I love this part! So many layers abd interpretations!

She isn't angry at him for lying. She wants him to shut up because he isn't lying and she doesn't want Nahuseresh to hear.

I hate to disagree with the estimable checkers, but I think there is more to it than that. She needs to shut Gen up because there is a very real danger that the truth behind his words could shatter that brittle facade she desperately believes she has to maintain, especially now.

It's not just doesn't want Nahuseresh to hear; she is terrified that *Irene* might hear.

And it should be noted that before Gen came along, Attolia was pretty much a noncombatant when it came to hand to hand stuff. Poisoning people and commanding armies, yes, but not direct, punch-in-the-mouth fighting. It's likely that she hadn't hit anyone before, either. She might have reached the same conclusion we did.

I think it's not only that but also that there are so many things Gen might possibly say that make her look less in control of the situation and the balance of control is so brittle with Nahuseresh looking on that she wants to make sure he doesn't say something that would put her in the position of having to have him killed on the spot in order to prove herself.

Be that as it may, speaking from experience (:P), you usually don't think about it first before you hit someone.

But she might have, if she was already thinking to shut him up.
