We know that Kamet was never told about the navy massing, or that it was being hidden in the strait north of the tiny port of Hemet in the province of Hemsha.  But what about his master?

If this has been canvassed before, I apologize.

My thoughts upon finishing Thick as Thieves. (A few of them, anyway.) Somewhat jumbled, many still processing. Numbered, in an attempt to organize them for discussion. Posting them here since the other threads are so lengthy already!

Spoilers under the cut!

“I could run away and make myself a free man.”
“Oh, I’d find you.”
-The Queen of Attolia

I asked our authoress if it was okay for me to write a spoiler free review, and she gleefully gave me permission to “torture” you all! Thank you so much, Megan! XD

Now, for the real trick… How to review a QT book without giving anything away. This is a no spoiler review as it says on the tin. I’m sworn to secrecy.

However, I will be talking openly about the information revealed in the summaries published online (I have to have something to work with), so if you don’t want to know even that about the new book, beware of small spoilers. I wrote this to be as general as possible and nothing specific is revealed.

As we prepare for Hurricane Sandy's impact, we hope that allowing her to blow out her frustrations on the Eastern seaboard will allow her to calm down, and perhaps begin to see Eugenides in a new, better light. (Or at least give him a few sand free days as she is busy elsewhere!!:)

and tentative competition?

I'm not sure if just any one is allowed to organise a competition, but if this is allowed I will do it.

Down the rabbit hole... )

...occurred to me while I was rereading QoA this week.  Probably some of you have noticed this before, but I hadn't, and I thought I'd share.  It concerns this passage, after Eugenides' plot to capture Attolia has been forcefully interrupted by Nahuseresh:

"As he opened his mouth to say more, Nahuseresh reached the queen's shoulder, and the queen struck again, this time boxing Eugenides' ear hard with her cupped hand.  Eugenides staggered, slipped on the slick ground, and fell backward onto his bound arms...She hoped the fall would shut him up but considered kicking him to be sure." (301)

This moment has always bothered me a little.  Of course, we know that Attolia is liable to hit Gen when she's angry (KoA, anyone?).  No doubt that's most of her motivation.  BUT (the revelation at last) throughout this sequence, one of Attolia's purposes is to keep Nahuseresh in the dark about her potential alliance with Eddis.  (We see this later when Nahuseresh is talking to her about Moira alerting him to Gen's "goal," the Pricas Spring, and Attolia snaps, "His goal?"--worried, I think, that he's guessed.)

So while she is angry and lashes out, her hitting Gen at this point also serves a political purpose: keeping him quiet so that Nahuseresh doesn't guess what he had been trying to do.

Any thoughts?

More proof, not that we needed it, of how rich these books are, furnishing new thoughts every time.

I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack! It's time for another round of spoiler-free discussion, this time concerning the last third of QoA. I apologize in advance for how much of a blabbermouth I am.

This week we read from “In Ephrata, Attolia sat relaxed on the large chair…” to “And she believed him.”

Favorite line(s): This is a toughie. But, if we’re just going for “singular line(s) I really enjoyed,” I’d have to go with…
“He’s the captain of my personal guard. He’s supposed to guard my person,” Attolia said. (ch. 18)

(Also, “Pol would make him go somewhere on a horse” and “Laughing, he dropped his head onto the bed; then he looked up to grin at Attolia” [both ch. 19]—am I wrong, or is this the first time he grins after that moment in ch. 10 Eddis had where she said she missed his grin?)

Favorite scene(s): Let’s just roll with it!
--Anything involving Teleus and Attolia
--The proposal!
--THE KISS. OMG THE KISS.
--The conversation between Gen and Attolia after the Mede ambush
--The conversation between Attolia and Nahuserfish before the battle
--The first conversation or two between Attolia and Eddis
--Attolia alone in her throne room
--the ending

Thoughts, Questions, Discussion Ideas: Bear with me; each of these chapters keeps competing with the others for FAVORITE CHAPTER EVER, so I have a lot to bring up.

I think this touches on most of the notes I’ve taken, so I’ll leave these as the basic provisions for the potluck, but everyone else is free to bring food too! Favorite scenes, lines, moments, issues I didn’t bring up, everything is welcome. And for dessert we can have lots of squeeing about the last page. :-D

I was feeling crafty and after seeing the Nahuseresh fish, I decided to draw how I envisioned him as a despicable human being. I also made a Thief icon, a line I'm sure you all remember!

Hello again fellow Sounisians! I've finally plucked up the courage to post another peice of art on Sounis!
Alright, I did not make up the phrase, 'Manipulative Meadean Nahuserfish' but I couldn't help myself, I had to draw it.
This is the outcome of to much Chatzy, It's Nahuseresh as a fish, in the watery world. You can see Sounis, Attolia, Mede, and Eddis are seaweed. I hope you enjoy!

So I'm taking a course in Arthurian Legends (which, it probably goes without saying, is entirely awesome) and I came across something pretty cool while reading part of Geoffrey of Monmouth's "History of the Kings of Britain." At this point, Arthur and his troops are locked in battle with the Roman empire and their various allies. The relevant passage follows:
"First a loss was inflicted on the Britons, because Bedivere the Cupbearer was slain, and Kay the Seneschal mortally wounded. For while Bedivere was fighting Boccus, king of the Medes, he was pierced by that one's lance among the enemy troops and collapsed, slain. When Kay the Seneschal tried to avenge him, he was surrounded by the troops of the Medes and received his death wound. Yet like a good soldier, with a flank that he was leading, he opened a way through slain and routed Medes and would have retreated to his own lines with his division intact if he had not encountered the division of the King of Libya..." (The Romance of Arthur, New, Expanded Edition: An Anthology of Medieval Texts in Translation, p. 88)
So it seems, at least according to the relatively unreliable Geoffery, that the Medes were active, allied strongly with Rome, and pretty bad-ass way back in Arthur's time. (The dates of which are not easily ascertained, unfortunately.) Even if Geoffrey's Medes don't reflect reality, it's still cool to connect fiction to fiction.

Arggggh I wish to draw fanart but I cannot find my boooooks. For some reason, I've never been able to get a mental image of certain characters, or cannot separate them from each other in my mind. Quick! Character descriptions!

Nahblahblah (can only remember red beard D:), Kamet, and how do Pol and Teleus differ? Lol, Teleus is basically Pol to me, although every now and then I picture one less chin stubbly than the other. And, I am sad to admit these ones but... I can't remember either Magus' or Sophos' descriptions. I know Sophos' personality, which tends to help with how they look, but I rarely read character descriptions. Because I am dumb.

So...here's a discussion question for fun:  Who is your favorite MINOR character in the books, and why?  Or, which minor character would you like to know more about?

Have at it.

My dad and I got into a discussion about why Gen was upset about the whole can't strangle Nahusaresh thing. Then my dad said, "Well, I don't think that Eugenides will actually kill Nahusaresh. I think he'll frame him and get the Mede emperor to do it instead." So, at dinner we came up with our theory.
The Theory:
Gen and Costis are going to go to Medea, but not to kill anyone. They are going to go plant evidence against Nahusaresh. If the Mede emperor, or his heir, Nahusaresh's brother, suspected Nahusaresh of plotting to become emperor himself, they might turn on him. All of his intelligence, spy networks, and battle plans would also be suspect. That might slow down the advance of the Mede and give Attolia, Eddis, and Sounis some more time to prepare. Perhaps planting evidence that Nahusaresh was working with the Queen of Attolia? After all, I got the impression that he spent quite a lot of time in Attolia. That's a lot of time away from the Mede court, a lot of time to form ambitions.
So, what do you think? If it seems crazy, please, tell me. I greatly desire feedback.

Recently in the Conspiracy Room we've been discussing Attolian etc. clothing, in particular what the men wear (and yes, underwear did get mentioned!). Checkers suggested discussing it here as well.

So, how do you visualise the clothes, or don't you? It seems pretty much up to our imaginations - the books are mainly vague (on purpose, I think?). For the men I've seen various mentions of pants/trousers, a kilt, shirts, undershirts, overshirts, tunics, coats, robes, and a cape - but not all together ;-) And we know Eddis sometimes wears trousers instead of a dress or robe.

And how distinct do you think different regional fashions are? KoA has the King wearing a Medean style and Relius Continental, and talks of an Eddisian tunic.

I have a question about a scene in QOA I'd like to get your thoughts on...

In QOA, Attolia had sarcastically told Gen she would wear the ruby earrings he had given her when she was willing to marry him--which at this point would be never. However, Attolia wears the earrings for the first time when Eugenides is captured by the Medes and awaiting his fate in her megaron. Do you think Eugenides realized her intentions when he saw her wearing them and that she was going to side with Eddis to drive out the Medes? (This is on page 219). Also, I wonder what was running through his head when he saw her wearing them. Was he thinking something to the effect of "Hallelujah, she's not going to kill me after all?" or maybe "Hallelujah, she's going to marry me?!" Or did he not even notice the earrings? What do you all think? (I love this passage because a lot of intrigue is going on without Attolia's enemies or the reader knowing at first).

Jessica

Hi folks - I bought KoA yesterday, finished last night, and have been dying to discuss with someone! I wish I'd looked for this comm before now. :)

So quick intro: I'm sprite, a woman, 30 years old. I first heard about MWT a few years ago, when I worked at Harper and QoA was going into paperback. The buzz for QoA was great, but luckily I heard it was a sequel and read The Thief first. Brilliant! And QoA, so different, was just as good.

KoA was worth every minute of the wait. I actually cackled when I found out what Gen said to set Costis off. And I was late to work this morning because I was rereading when I should have been getting ready.

What I found most surprising about KoA is that certain plot issues MWT developed in QoA still remain unresolved. I was afraid this would be the last Gen adventure, but it seems pretty clear there's more to come. Any thoughts on where the next book will go?
