Hello!
Let's start with a few inspirational quotes:
"socks don't *need* mates" -- Megan Whalen Turner
"[Sejanus] tells Hilarion ... that any attack on the king, even so much as a mismatched stocking, is a blow for the queen." -- The King of Attolia, p.82 ****
Since the dawn of time (or, well, the history of socks), socks have been made to match. Whether they pass through a series of machines in a factory or through the caring hands of a knitter, these garments are generally made in pairs, worn in pairs, and worn out and discarded in pairs. BUT THERE IS ANOTHER WAY!
Forced into the narrow niche of matching-ness, few socks can be truly happy. As many Sounisians know, last year a revolution, A Conspiracy of Socks, was born. We aim to liberate the socks! They must roam free, on any feet, paired with any other socks of any length or pattern!!!!!
If you're feeling confused but interested, or if you just want to relive the glory days from last year ... some links ~

If you want to join in, here are some ideas:
* Wear mismatched socks all week! (o' course!) You can select them randomly, or pick them to fit a character, or ... anything! Remember that mwt herself wears mismatched socks!
* Extend it to shoes, mittens, gloves, earrings, etc. if you really want to
* Tell your friends! Tell them about these books, tell them about Sockish Freedom, spread the joy...
* Write an ode to your favorite pair (or non-pair?)!
* Make a pin! (possible design in linked directions above)
* Make sock-shaped cookies!
Any other ideas? Changes to the date? I hope everyone is doing well. FREE THE SOCKS AND LET THEM DANCE!
***We're not trying to strike blows against Attolia or act like Gen's attendants, but it's pretty cool that KoA has a mention of mismatched socks. Thank you,

Also, I know that there are plenty of human (as opposed to sock) movements going on right now that are or nearly are real revolutions. I'm not (or we're not, or nobody is) trying to draw parallels that might seem to trivialize world events or compare matched socks to loss of life. It's just ... this was a lot of fun last year, and I think that mismatched socks are a great way to show spirit. And you guys are awesome. Sorry for the awkward disclaimer.

me: Mommy, I'm bored.
Mommy: Oh really.
me: Mommy, what should I dooooooooo?
Mommmy: Oh, I don't know, tap dance naked on the roof?
me: ...
Mommy: Or [insert chore that needs doing].

Date: 3/13/11 06:49 am (UTC)Flint-hearted folk look down on us and scoff,
"Socks don't need mates; alone, they're quite well off."
Could they speak words so cruel if they but knew, the knaves,
The anguish we endure as, struggling through the soapy waves
Or tumbling in the Santa Ana of the dryer
Now plunged below, now flung, all helpless, higher
We watch our close-knit partner, mate, and friend
Vanish to some place beyond human (or sockish) ken
And leave us doomed to lonely and unmatched, despise“d end?

"My thanks to user ninedaysaqueen of LiveJournal.com for simplifying discussions of my books by proposing abbreviations and suggesting most of the above."
Yes, quite sqee-worthy!

Date: 3/14/11 04:25 am (UTC)It's not just about what happens when a sock loses a mate, it's about FREEDOM, EVERYDAY, everywhere. We're not trying to separate the socks agains their will, we just don't want them constantly paired up with their mate just because they're the same pattern.
*could probably write an essay on this* :S
