Came across this and thought you all might enjoy it.  Haven't been on LJ in a while so hope I'm not duplicating a post.

This is how to make book shoes.  Tumblr user dellabut used her favorite bits of Queen of Attolia to make them.  I'd have a hard time tearing up one of my favorite books!

Woven into the Earth: Textile Finds in Norse Greenland by Else Ostergard

Free PDF for December, quick !

Free (DRM-free PDF) Woven into the Earth [1300s Norse Clothing & Methods
Archaeology]

Woven into the Earth: Textile Finds in Norse Greenland by Else ?sterg?rd is
the English-language version of her lavishly-illustrated mostly
layperson-comprehensible comprehensive academic overview of historical
Viking Age and medieval Norse textile finds from the Herjolfsn?s settlement
(Wikipedia DK) in Greenland, along with plenty of backgrounder information
on the accompanying archaeological excavations, period era materials and
methods, modern exhibitions, etc., courtesy of the Aarhus University Press
in Denmark.

This is their featured English-language Free Ebook of the Month selection
for December, and is really very nifty, and teach you a great deal about not
just what people wore and where it was found, but also how they preserved
the finds and what they learned from each garment and accessory, and the
tools and techniques of the entire Norse Greenlandic textile manufacturing
industry, such as it was.

There is a companion book, Medieval Garments Reconstructed: Norse Clothing
Patterns, which is also pretty nifty and was once offered as a previous
FBotM selection over a year ago,

I spotted this at a store esterday, and just couldn't help thinking of Eugenides and Irene.

Attolis&Attolia

I'm starting to see those two everywhere.
[identity profile] creative-lefty2.livejournal.com
OK, so Attolia probably didn't have the same 'do as the Vastial Virgins of anchient Rome, but it is still facinating to see this reconstructed. Besides, there is a fibula pin involved!

Hi, everybody!

You may remember that my sister posted a vid of a library concert a little while ago, about a war dance that Sophos might possibly do (perhaps in a pub?)

Well, I just found this old vid of a perfomance of the dance my sister posted earlier, and, you know what? I think it has to be Eddisian!

Granted, the fellow who's leading the dancers isn't quite my idea of the MOW, but look at the outfits! Crazy ninja Eddisians, wouldn't you say? So black, and with all that pretty piping (on the clothes, as well as in the music).

I hope the embed works but if not, here's a link, too:
http://youtu.be/nTA6guINUM0

BTW, Here's another cool Georgian dance I found, with daggers! What do you think? Would Eddisians maybe do something similar?

PS Sorry that first vid is a little grainy, but I hope you enjoy it anyway, if you watch! And I wish everybody who is celebrating a happy Labor Day Weekend.

So, [livejournal.com profile] puppeteergirl's post inspired me and I went off to the Tudor doll site and messed around for waaay too long. I also tried the Roman (which I think should actually be Greek/Roman?) version and came up with a few versions of Irene and Helen that I'm pretty happy with.

Irene no. 2 )

Hey people! I recently was required to write an essay on what I think makes good writing. I was supposed to take a scene from a movie or book or a poem or song and use it as an example of good writing. So I chose a scene from the KoA. It was really fun, and I thought some of you dear people might enjoy reading my thoughts.

I also created a few characters from the series on Azaleas Dress up Dolls website in the Tudors game, which can be played here: http://www.azaleasdolls.com/tudors2.html

Hello Sounisians!

Here's the Story:

Their Magesties of Sounis, Eddis, and Attolia  have been cordially invited to a Halloween Costume Party and they have cordially accepted.  However, being unaccustomed to the traditions of a costume party, they have turned to the loyal and devoted denizens of Sounis for some costume advice.

So tell them what you think! No character is to minor to come to the party, so bring costume suggestions for everyone - Guards, Attedants, Ambassadors, Ministers, Secretaries and Royalty.

I know this is a little early for Halloween, but you know how Gen is about clothes, and he'll need some time to make sure everyone's costumes are just so.

Have Fun!

Hi guys. This is my first post ever, so I'll give a quick intro: I've basically been a lurker here for a few years now, with only about three comments to my name. Some of you may know me as the choreographer of and a dancer(as Gen) in "The Amphora," which checkers linked to awhile ago. Anyways, I fell in love with this series when I happened upon QoA at my local library, and I don't think I've put it down since.

Now, for the real post. For awhile now I've been pondering over Gen and his stealthy walking: whether it's really possible, how he does it, etc. Why? Because I'm a dancer, and and I find the way feet work to be a fascinating thing. Anyways, the answers I've come up with are interesting (at least to me) and I wanted to share and get others' thoughts on the matter. To start with I figured Gen almost definitely wears flat, soft-soled boots (it may have been stated or implied in the books, I can't remember for certain.) However, this got me thinking of something else: if Gen is always wearing these types of boots, he probably has foot and ankle problems. There's just no shock absorption or arch support (did that even exist back then?). Flats are also heavy on the heel, which can lead to plantar fasciitas, the same problem faced by those who constantly wear flip flops. I suppose, though, it's also probable that his boots are cushioned in some way. And, I'm probably just be over-thinking this due to my own ankle problems when wearing flats. As for Gen's stealthy walking style, I think he supinates his feet. For those of you unfamiliar with this term, it means to place the weight of the body on the outside part of the foot. I found that when trying it myself, it was easier to do more of a role down from heel to toe when supinating. I also think he keeps his toes grounded for as long as possible when he walks. I'm sorry if I'm not properly explaining it. I also considered the possibility of him walking on the ball of his foot (tiptoe), but  that has always made more noise when I have done it personally. Finally he could have just received the ability as a gift from his god. Am I crazy?

Lastly, I have a little something I've been working on something to share with you all:
So I'm kind of a fashionista at heart (granted, it doesn't always show), and lately I've been reading a blog that does fashion inspired by various things like movies, paintings, broadway, etc. Just for fun I decided to do my own collection inspired by the various covers of the books and with some details I remembered. Here's the link to the looks:

http://www.polyvore.com/inspired_queens_thief_series/collection?id=1128374

As you'll notice, these are (hopefully) practical and modern versions of the looks found on the covers. Obviously I had to fill in the blanks with some of them, but I think they all turned out pretty well. I think the one inspired by KoA's cover was the only I really stretched on. It was fun adding the little details into the jewelery. Comments? Questions?

At our school we have a "Book Expo" where students dress up as one of the characters in a book and answer questions about themselves. My friend's little brother dressed up as Eugenides. Needless to say, I couldn't stop beaming and saying how awesome he was.
;P
He had maps, a board game, favorite quotes and Hamiathe's Gift.

Hello, everyone!

I have a faint memory of reading something about Attolian soldiers wearing red and for some reason I've always associated green with Eddis and Eddisians (and blue somewhat with Sounisians), but now I can't seem to find any proper mention of these in the books!

So, are there specific colours for the different countries or their armies, nobles etc. mentioned in the books or is my memory false? And if they don't have a specific colour to themselves, do you associate certain colours to the different countries?

How about insignia? I don't have a copy of CoK around but there's the lion ring, right? Are there any others? Any specific symbols of Attolia or Eddis?

There's a bit in The Thief when magus and Pol and Sophos and Ambiades climb the cliff on their journey back and Gen stays at the foot of the cliff: "They weren't the garrison from Kahlia; like the soldiers we'd met earlier, they were dressed in the colors of the Queen's Guard." (EOS PB p.216) But what ARE the colours of the Queen's Guard?! There's also this bit after Attolia and Gen have climbed up the stairs on the cliff in KoA: "Most of them were in the uniform tunics of Eddis's soldiers" (EOS PB p.253) This indicates that there are certain colour or colour combinations for the armies or certain parts of the armies, but are any of the colours actually told?

I have a bit of a fan art project in mind and these details would bring a nice addition to it, though any discussion about the possible meanings of colours regarding the countries should prove to be interesting since it's you fellow sounisians I'm asking. :D

It's here! The 2nd annual A Conspiracy of Socks Week officially started today (it's still sunday, right?), and I hope all of you who participated had a delightful time liberating your socks.

Have a great week!

I am having a fancy dress party in two weeks, and people have to come as their favourite character.
I'm going as Eugenedies (for obvious reasons) so I have two weeks to make a costume.
I decided on Gen from KoA, since it's gives me the most to work with, I think, costume wise.
Does anyone have any suggestions for things I could do to make the costume-making easier on myself? Tips or Tricks or anything?
I only work 2 days a week, but I do have a one year old, so my sewing time is slightly limited unless I want to fight the baby for the fabric the whole time.

Hello!

Let's start with a few inspirational quotes:

"socks don't *need* mates" -- Megan Whalen Turner

"[Sejanus] tells Hilarion ... that any attack on the king, even so much as a mismatched stocking, is a blow for the queen." -- The King of Attolia, p.82 ****

Ok, so today I have a special present for all my lovely Megan Whalen Turner Fans! And I really hope you like it!

I have been communicating with Vince Natale, the amazingly talented artist who did all the covers for the latest American editions of Megan's books. As you may know, the cover art for Conspiracy of Kings has been a major topic of discussion, and it came up again at the Horn Book Colloquium at Simmons College last October. I saw a few sketches there that I had never seen anywhere else, and they fascinated me.

So, I got in touch with Vince Natale, and he sent me all of the concept art for COK! Plus, he will do a podcast, and will send me concept art for all the other books, too, which I can share with everybody. So, we definitely have some fun things to look forward to in the New Year!

I'm in an awful hurry just now -- family stuff calls -- so I'm just going to post the pictures with only occasional bits of commentary. Since there are a lot of them, they'll be under a cut.

BTW, you know that trend of hands holding things on book covers? Well, it reappears here! I think you can probably guess how ;-D.

Here we go -- enjoy! (And checkers, stop pacing! You're making me nervous!)

So a few days ago, in this thread, there was a Queen's Thief version of Clue discussion going on. In the "what color would Gen be" part, yellow was brought up as a color. I've been thinking about it here and there for the past few days, and I think what's interesting about Gen is that besides for his obsession with his clothing and his boots, he's also someone who likes to read in his library and he is (or was) a thief, and it's unlikely that he skulked about in yellow.

Do you think he wears flashy clothing in an attempt to disassociate himself from his "thief" part? Is it part of his pretense to incompetence as king? Did he even like being the Thief, or did he only do it because he couldn't stand being a soldier? Or is it simply that he's a complex character who's sometimes a fop and sometimes quiet and reserved?

We have been studying Ancient Greece for a while in class, and have recently moved on to Pompeii and Herculaneum. I'm sure many of you would know the feeling of seeing the word "peplos" or something similarly related to the Queen's Thief series, letting out a squeak of excitement and starting to babble incoherently to people who have no idea what you're talking about. Well, it happens a lot in my Ancient History class...

On researching the Pompeiian forum I came across this graffiti:

I.7.8 (bar; left of the door); 8162: We two dear men, friends forever, were here.  If you want to know our names, they are Gaius and Aulus.

If only the other had been called Boagus...

For Halloween this year, my siblings and I went as our favorite characters. Yep, that's right. Attolia, Eddis, and Eugenides. So after trick-or-treating we took some action shots. Can you guess which scenes are which? (some of them are non specific) (Also please forgive the wrong handed hook, I took the pictures on my computer camera, and every scene is reversed.)
