lemme see what else i want to say...oh the hair thing. what do you think are the prevailing hair trends in Attolia/Eddis/Sounis? i only sort of figured out beards. Medes apparently have a penchant for dying their beard red and dividing them in two. hmm. and i think, like most ancient societies (and even a few centuries ago), people valued(?) beards. i faintly remember someone in the book commenting on Gen's age by saying he hadn't even got a beard. so, you tell a person's age by whether they have a beard? beards i think were often seen as a sign of maturity. so my theory is beards are popular. and if you don't have a beard, even if you're pretty 'old', you'll be kind of despised?
then hair. Attolia has long hair, and her attendants braid it before she goes to bed (did i remember correctly?). so is it common practice in Attolia to braid your hair before going to bed? i think it's a bit odd, cause then how do you get to sleep with that braid sticking beneath your neck? and Eddis has short curly hair, and she's not considered beautiful. so long hair would be the idea of feminine beauty. kind of like today, isn't it? despite what people say, guys still go after girls with long hair.
was drifting. now guy hair. Gen had long hair in Thief, so again, like roman/greek civilisations, guys in the region had long hair. actually i don't remember a period of long ago history where guys didn't have long hair. or long hair was the norm at least. anyway, conclusion: idea of feminine beauty was to have long hair, guys too had long hair. not very much is it? somebody supply me with info, please? i'm really very curious. and next time i get the chance, i'm going to jump on clothes.
i'm going to use posts economically. so it's going to be rather long. reading QT actually has a bad effect on my writing. my stories start to sound like it, and though someone said imitation was a form of flattery, i still want my plot things to be original. some e.g.s. don't scream.
this girl causes this guy to have his legs broken. and that guy has nightmares. and he's scared of her. and they love each other. the only difference is no one hears his screams cause he stuffs a hanky in his mouth. scary or not?
and i think Agape is meant to distract readers. she seems to be Gen's most likely love interest in QoA. i never even thought that Gen might love Attolia. well actually, i wasn't even expecting a romance, but still...btw, Agape is a really nice name. it means 'love' in greek i think. phileo also means love, but it's more 'like' and is earthly or something. while agape means true love, not romantic love but the sort of love God has. the eternal perfect love sort. that's a very nice name for anybody to have. does anybody pronounce it as a-gayp? *giggles* i pronounce it as ah-gah-pay. when any one says a-gayp, i tend to get giggly cause i see Agape with her mouth wide open and looking extremely horrified. *giggles again*
sighs. needs to sleep now or i won't be able to wake up tmr. school day. booo...

Date: 9/17/06 02:53 pm (UTC)I don't think Eddis is considered unbeautiful because she has short hair. I think she's considered unbeautiful because she is. Beautiful is beautiful, even with short hair (see Natalie Portman).

Date: 9/17/06 03:39 pm (UTC)I think with Eddis it might be a combination. She certainly isn't beautiful, but perhaps the short curly hair adds to a boyish image. Long hair being an ideal of beauty just seems to fit in with the impressino we get of the three countries in the books.

Date: 9/17/06 03:17 pm (UTC)I actually think the Greeks and Romans usually had short hair? I could be wrong. But the Ancient Egyptians shaved their heads and wore wigs. And then people did that again in 18th century Europe.

Date: 9/17/06 04:22 pm (UTC)I'm sensing a trend here; I also have very long hair, past my hips. I've never choked myself with it accidentally, but I usually don't braid it. It wouldn't be uncomfortable to sleep on, though, unless you put a band at the top too.

Date: 9/17/06 05:44 pm (UTC)Darn you ALL. I always wanted long hair, but noooo, my hair just doesn't want to do anything after it hits my shoulders. So it's short and near my face.
Eddis's short hair could also be a pratical thing--not only does it add to the boyish image, but she does physical stuff, and the short hair doesn't get in the way. It could be another parallel between her and Attolia: she's free to ride around, have short hair, whatever, whereas Attolia keeps her hair long, as is expected of her, and doesn't get to do fun things.
I think Gen's decision to keep his hair longer wasn't the style of the time--he did it because it was useful. Remember they cut his hair short while he's sick in QoA.
"Agape" is the perfect love of God to man, which people try to achieve here on earth; "philia" is the love of children to parents and brothers and sisters, or friends; "eros" is lustful love, not really love at all. Agape and Costis are going to have such cute children.
Whoo, the QoA discussion, #6--Eddis doesn't want Gen to become like Attolia...look at the way MWT misleads us into thinking he's going to kill Irene! Clever, clever lady. (Never mind #3--"What would you have done in [Attolia's] place?" ...*refrains from answering*)

Anyway...I think Xanthe would be better than Duchess, buuuut...I don't think I really like either of those. I'll think on it.

Date: 9/17/06 11:03 pm (UTC)My hair is about elbow length, and braiding it at night dosen't bother me at all. It used to, though, when my hair was shorter because it ended right under my neck and I couldn't move it to the side.
My court name is Agape(I say a-gah-pay). I knew it meant 'love', but I didn't realize it was a specific type.

Date: 9/18/06 10:58 am (UTC)eek but how did this get to setting up Ornon with someone? how about Chloe? Chloe is such a nice name. i forgot but is she still Attolia's attendant? i think she got fired somewhere in QoA. no idea. that'll be so fun. the Eddisian ambassador is really staying in Attolia to see his lover! and how will the lovers be fulfilled? he is so high and she is so not so high! Attolia would totally lose any little respect she has for Ornon! and Gen will be laughing up his sleeve! yay!heeheehee!
that was wild. right. it thought the greek ladies had those chignon things so they must have had some hair, right? i know the roman ladies dyed their hair red, for some reason =)
oh bingo! found something on greek hair:
Men's hair was long in the early years, but later it was cut short and carefully curled. Bleach was often used to make the hair fashionably blond; perfumes and pomades were applied. Beards were common until the time of Alexander. Most men were bareheaded, a hat being reserved for bad weather. There was a low-crowned, broad-brimmed style—the petasos—and a brimless cap, the pilos. Women's hair was long; it was usually curled and waved on the forehead and sides and drawn to a chignon at the nape. Many women wore wigs of different shades and decorated their coiffure with flowers, jewels, and fillets. They draped the head with the cloak and, in the Hellenistic period, sometimes perched a straw hat on top.
so did they have long hair and wear wigs or was it just the long wig? no idea. that's a very long comment. and my hair isn't very long. it touches just below the collar(not a good thing, considering that someday the discipline master will catch me for it)but i'm a very good girl. so for some reason teachers don't scrutinise me. i keep my shirt tucked in, don't wear ankle socks and look absolutely innocent. conformist me.
mmph. this is getting like a post. can you do a LJ cut on a comment?! i guess short hair isn't exactly the beauty thing. and Attolia and Eddis are like fullblown opposites, at least in terms of appearance. but if Attolia is beautiful, it doesn't mean every feature of Eddis is ugly. am i arguing against myself? clueless. btw rowana, the barbie icon is freaky.

Date: 9/18/06 02:51 pm (UTC)Remember Dite's hair? Long and curled. I can't see Gen doing that, though.
Discipline master? *shudders* What the heck? And what do they call zucchini in Singapore?

Date: 9/19/06 09:38 am (UTC)and it is sort of like the best of everything from everywhere which is really fun...guns...pocket watches...amphoras...etc
you know those 18th cen guys? i don't think all of them wore wigs, but i'm pretty sure most of them wore their hair long. i think the guys w/out wigs but w long hair are really cute!
that was really random.
