[identity profile] madclairvoyant.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] queensthief
Hi.In line with the time-honoured tradition of newbies, I am here with my first post. I have been lurking around here for a rather long time, and I thought it would be nice to be able to post things.
One thing I have noted in the books is continuous mention of beds. First, in The Thief, Gen is always complaining of how he wants to sleep and stares at the bedrolls a few times (if my memory serves me right.) Then in the Queen of Attolia, though understandable, he seems to be sitting or lying on his bed staring at the ceiling or bemoaning his fate. And the trend goes on, like how Sophos lies on the bed to trace the golden filigree on the ceiling of his room, or how he is glad to sleep on one. Maybe they are all so fixated on beds because they travel a lot? Or maybe I am just dim like that. Sorry!
Another thing I would like to point out is that throughout the whole of The King of Attolia, well, everyone keeps pointing out that Gen needs to become the king of Attolia, but at the last sentence of the second last chapter (or thereabouts; I do not have my book with me; it is at the next table and I am just lazy, no other excuse),it mentions that he is the King of Attolia, which makes me wonder about this. Perhaps they want him to take up the mantle, which is why it is referred to as title, but near the end, he actually embodies what the king is suppose to be like. Completely off topic, Irene also demonstrates that she is a deadpan snarker at this point.
I think that I am currently ranting, but I still have a bit more to gabble on about. Although my favourite book is The Queen of Attolia there are two scenes in particular that I find rather interesting. One of course is the scene in which Costis arrives at the revelation of exactly what Gen is staring at. I thought that the part of being never being able to go home struck a chord in me. I have been on an exchange programme before, overseas, and although it was for only about 2 weeks, it was easy to get a little homesick. It must be really hard to Gen. The second thing is Aris' monologue. I thought it was brilliant. Does anyone else agree?
I am rambling by this point, I am very sure, but one last thing I would like to add is that I know this song called Aubrey, by Bread. It is rather old, I think, a few times my age, but it sort of reminded me of Gen and his mother. The first verse described how unusual the girl and her name is, and Gen's mother probably was, knowing the Thieves and their strange penchants. The second describes dancing under the moonlight and tripping, which I think is exactly what the two would have done on the roof of Eddis' palace. Finally, the last verse describes the persona not knowing the girl well, but loving her all the same. For me, this resonates very strongly with Gen. He was little more than a child when she died; he would not have understood things about her his older siblings would have, but he loved her regardless.
That is enough. I think I will talk to the wall to finish this mess.

P.S.I am a great fan of Greek Mythology. Three guesses who my username honours?

Perhaps all the bed references are a reflection of the fact that the author is a busy mom of three, for whom the concept of sleep is but a golden memory from the past? haha.

Being a homesick individual myself, I cried real tears when Gen stares at the view of the mountains out his window. I have a picture of my old room & windows that I've kept on my desktop for some time. I open it every now and then and do my best to pretend I'm actually there.

As for your username, my first thought was Sybil Trelawney from HP! Second guesss... Persephone? Third guess...Cassandra?

And hey... welcome! :)

I'm inclined to agree with the busy mom idea. I recently had to stand-in for my mom while she was out of town, and WOW, who knew housework could be so much...well, work! Just planning dinner every night is stressful! Kudos to all the parents out there.

Besides, beds and sleep are some of the greatest joys in life. These characters just know where it's at.

Ooh, there are more bed references, too. In TT, when they all talk about where they'd most like to be, doesn't Gen say in a bed with fine linen sheets? And in ACoK, when Eddis writes the coded letter to Sophos, it contains a reference to their marriage bed.

Welcome!

Welcome!

There is also the cloth of gold bedcloth in KoA, with Gen sitting in it "like a god revealed".
