..speculating...
but then every time I see lions, I think of Sounis.

Ion lifted the sash over the King's head and set to unbuttoning his vest. The King, never one to cooperate, was being even more difficult than usual. He refused to let go of the paper on which he had been scribbling through the whole of the appeals session, and refusing to relax from his oratory stance as he read from it.
"The sound of swordplay drifted in through the open windows, but within the dark room, there was a heavy, suspenseful silence. The weight of Costis's words hung between them like a sacrificial lamb hangs from an altar, in that moment before the priest calls for the Gods blessing. The lady Heiro pressed her delicate, dainty, manicured, white hand to her full, red lips, and stared at him, memorizing the planes of his face, longing for that moment when those lips would banish all distance between them. Costis's rugged, tanned face, normally so bland, was alight with the kind of passion he normally saved only for occasions on which he ended up committing treason by punching his king in the face. Ouch, Hilarion! My arm is not supposed to bend that way."
"If your majesty would cooperate," Ion mumbled, "we might more speedily and comfortable remove his clothes from his royal person."
"Careful, Ion," the King squinted at him, "or next I might read what I've written about you and your lovely Zenia. I've had the most delicious idea for a plot twist - her eyes really were just made for lingering glances, you know. I think they might be lingering on our visiting cousin Sounis."
Philologos stifled a snort in his elbow, and at Ion's glare scurried forward with the King's nightshirt.
"Now," Attolis continued, "where was I. Ah, yes. Costis's penetrating gaze. Perhaps I ought to skip the next portion, none of you is interested, I am sure, in Heiro's exquisite, creamy, perfectly-shaped--"
"Your Majesty!" Hilarion cried in horror.
The King lifted his eyebrows. "Hilarion, I didn't think you would object to descriptions of the delicacies her father's barony is known for. It is perhaps a little unconventional, but in this story the plot hinges on the fact that Heiro, against the precedent of her high birth, is a master cheesemaker. Costis thinks with his stomach, as you know, and it is that which first attracts his notice."
Ion, dropping the nightshirt over his king's head, wondered if there'd be any way to smother him with it and make it look like an accident. The King's head appeared from within its folds, looking right at him and grinning. "It wouldn't do any good," Eugenides told him. "I'm fairly certain I'd keep talking even in death."

Date: 10/1/13 01:25 am (UTC)Costis, his Mede accent perfected, is set ashore by a disguised Attolian ship to infiltrate the Empire. Captured and, though his identity and role are undiscovered, made a slave, he is condemned to fight in the Mede equivalent of the Coliseum (in one of those outifts that reveal his manly, well-muscled torso and will cause the hearts a goodly proportion of the women of Sounis online to palpitate). There, he pulls the thorn out of the paw of a lion, which then befriends him and they escape together. While on the run, the lion, scratching up dirt because that's what cats, even giant cats, do when there's no kitty litter around, uncovers a hidden hoard of gold. Costis uses the money to pretend to be a merchant, the better to infiltrate the court of the greedy Emperor; and to make sure nobody recognizes the lion and puts two and two together, he buys a large quantity of grey felt and disguises the lion as a small elephant.

His friend, the Attolian King, always a slave to fashion, rolled his eyes in exasperation. But Sophos would not be swayed. "I am resolved," he said. "I will not wash or comb my hair until I have vanquished my enemy." So saying, he cast his golden comb into the dirt and walked resolutely towards the ship.
As the difficult weeks and months of his quest passed, his hair became dirtier and more unkempt, until he began to resemble a dust bunny, rather than the lion he was named for. But thankfully, this sorry state of affairs did not last. His friends soon saw his ship returning, with Sophos standing proudly on the deck, his bright hair shining in the sun and his enemy in chains at his feet.

a carpentry career. It's utilized for everything from sheds, residences and

solid walk or the parts for parking space racks.
