I can't wait to see them in person! And to read the new short stories.
Mr. Checkers says that before another book comes into the house, one needs to leave. Guess I'll be sneaking these in and stacking them innocently on the bookshelves...he won't even notice.
I couldn't step into a bookstore without looking for them, even though mine are still in transit from Amazon. They are lovely in person, feel nice in your hand, and I like the way they look lined up on the shelf (the sides being just as pretty as the front and back covers)! I'm so glad MWT got nice author blurbs for each one!
My friend did discover one (a copy of ACoK, the first one she grabbed) that was missing the first 16 pages! D: Looked like an assembly error. We took it to the help desk and hopefully saved someone from dismay!
Agreed! I really like the matte finish. Better than the high gloss on the previous editions. They are beautiful from all angles.
Did you noticed the summaries on the back were changed a little? Most notable is..
05 "But his greatest triumph--as well as his greatest loss--can only come if he succeeds in stealing something the Queen of Attolia may have sacrificed long ago."
17 But his success--or failure-- will depend on whether he can steal something the Queen of Attolia sacrificed long ago."
I like the updated summaries better. They're less spoiler. As are the new covers. They tease just enough to give you an idea of the story, but don't give anything away.
When the new cover images were revealed, I couldn't tell from my computer screen if the titles were actually embossed or simply a printed optical illusion. Turned out to be the latter, but I don't mind.
I agree the paper inside feels cheap, as it did in the Natale paperbacks (some of mine are already yellowing). Despite my best efforts to be gentle with them, my old glossy spines have developed creases, whereas the new editions seem to fall open very naturally. I like that. (And yeah, I'm a huge nerd.)
Those paintings were what drew me to the series in the first place, so I'm rather partial to them myself. I'm normally not much of a matchy-matchy sort of person, but there is something so satisfying about seeing a series with unified cover art lined up on my bookcase, so I'm sad that we won't get that with the old design.
However, having splurged on QoA and KoA, the new design is growing on me. I like that the artist went with a unique concept, as opposed to Ye Olde Big Face or Generic Fantasy Stock Photo like so many YA books do. I think it will help the books stand out in the stores and in review magazines.
My introduction to the series was seeing the cover for KoA on Amazon and investigating it further, to discover there were two previous books in the series I'd have to read first. I did so, feverishly, wanting to get to whatever part of the story had inspired the cover for King. The power of a good cover, eh? It will always hold a special place in my heart.
I'm bummed about not having matching artwork for the new books, too, but the look of the redesign is really fitting for the series overall, don't you think? I love the marble effect and the little illustrated story details at the bottom. Kinda classy and very photogenic! :)
Have you explored your under-the-bed storage options? A soda flat keeps things organized & holds a surprising amount of books. [They're also very useful at larger book sales. If you have a folding shopping cart, soda flats just fit inside, and keep your layers separated.]
I actually like the new covers too! I'm hoping I'm back to work by the time the new book comes out so that I can justify splurging a bit and getting the whole matching set. :)
It is nice to see these lovely beauties in the wild. I just hope they're selling - at my Barnes and Noble, I don't know if they are getting out the door yet. Still six copies of each on the shelves...though I did write a rave about it to be posted underneath, and they are all front-facing.
I've tried to spread the word among my readerly friends and fellow fans, and the response has been very positive, but many hadn't heard anything about the new editions until I told them. I'm thinking it may get a boost once Thick As Thieves hits shelves and people's attention is drawn to how nice they all look together. *hoping*
Guys, I opened to the map in QOA and screamed "WHAT???" when I read the note on the margins.
Then I read the first SEVEN LINES of the Thick as Thieves excerpt and got chills. Kamet has me by the heart. I don't think I can read the rest of the excerpt, I'm so torn up..... How can I wait until May??

I'm undecided about the new font.
