I was just rereading (for the millionth time) QoA, and I came across this (in regards to when Kamet & Nahuseresh escaped from Ephrata): "The slave released him, and in the confusion they managed to reach the outer stairs to the harbor.  They swam to a Mede ship moored in the harbor and escaped.  I'm very sorry."  (p.323)

TaT - SPOILER ALERT!!!!

Yet - in TaT, Kamet can't swim.

So, my question: how did he escape from Ephrata?  I am thinking that the Mede swam to the ship, towing Kamet along...but given how terrified of water he is, that must have been one awful journey.  Thoughts? Any other ideas?

Yeah I guess he must have. Which means nahuseresh is a very strong swimmer indeed

Also, probably towed Kamet along face down or something, poor man.

I'd have to look again, but I think Kamet makes a brief reference to this in TaT, something about how terrifying it was or something along those lines or a brief reference to being helped by Nahuseresh. I might be totally wrong about that, though.

I remember this as well. Kamet says Nahuseresh essentially towed him along despite his terror and protests.

That would be it. I think it stood out because it was another of those "why couldn't Nahuseresh just have stayed conveniently poisoned?" moments.

Good catch, I never thought of that. And, if I remember correctly that Ephrata is a "poor harbor," you wouldn't think a boat could moor too closely to shore, right? So it must have been quite a swim.

I found it! It's in Chapter 2, when Kamet has made his way to the docks, and is thinking about how slaves have escaped the city by slipping into the water after dark.

He says, "[B]ut I couldn't swim. When my master and I had fled Attolia, he had come up with the plan to swim out to a boat offshore. I begged him to leave me behind, but he insisted on pulling me through the water, determined to leave nothing that belong to him behind for the Attolian Queen. I'd swallowed half the sea that night, and after the crew lifted us on board the larger ship waiting for us, I vomited it out on the deck until I was too weak to stand."

So there you have it! Nahuseresh takes the credit.

In TAT Kamet is very specific about how traumatizing and painful getting towed along by Nahusaresh is. He's not a swimmer. He says he "swallowed half the sea." And puked and puked and puked when he was finally dragged onto the Mede ship. He really was almost killed in the process. And he had "begged" Nahusaresh to leave him behind, because he was afraid. Nahusaresh is described as very tall and fit and Kamet is SO small so I can imagine Nahusaresh being capable of it.

It's why Kamet reacts so completely hysterically, later, to Costis throwing him off the burning ship into shallow chin-deep water and he clings to Costis frantically enough to cause him to lose all of Attolis's money provided for the trip.

It's one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the book. Serious PTSD results right there. And in beautiful contrast to how sparsely and stoically Irene also discloses to us that she also can't swim in QoA.

And symbolically, to two heavily enslaved characters who cannot swim... surely a metaphor for a lack of control they feel in their lives.
