So, we were talking and started interrogating each other and realized that none of us know each other very well at all. Our introductory posts are all generally comprised of "OMFG! Other people who like MWT! *squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!*" because we're just so excited to find this group.

Anyway, I thought maybe a meme might be interesting. If you don't want to do it, then by all means, you don't have to. But hopefully, it'll be a fun way for us to all get to know each other better :)

Meme!

cool beans, I'll go next :)

1. I'm Jessica, obviously female
2. Maryland, USA
3. I first read The Thief when I was a teenager & wasn't sure if I'd like it at first, but of course I got hooked on it
4. Favorite Character: Eugenides, . . . he's an original, there's never been another character like him before
5. Favorite Bands: hmmm . . . I've been listening to Tori Amos, Heather Nova, and James Blunt recently
6. sunbeamchica, AIM . . . but I don't have the internet in my apartment, so I'm never on it :(
7. Favorite moment in the books: well, they all have good moments, but I think my favorite would have to be in QOA when Eugenides captures the Queen and takes her up the cliff where she's met by the ministers. There's so much going on in that scene! Gotta love it!
8. uh oh, I'm no good at picking theme songs
9. Favorite Color: green
10.What do I want to do with my life? Be happy, independent, and stress-free. So far, I've been doing pretty good with those :)

13.Name something awesome about you, and in the spirt of Gen, totally and shamelessly brag about it. well, I'm left-handed, pretty good at photography, bake a delicious red-velvet cake, and never gain any weight.

1. Your name, gender (for pronouns sake!)

You can call me Ro. My real name is difficult enough for people to pronounce in real life, so I stick to Rowana online. After hot debate, it's been decided that I'm female. Mostly. ;)

2. General Geographic Location (as specific or non-specific as you like)

London suburbia ('tis a trecherous world).

3. How were you introduced to the books?

I had money to burn, in the summer of 2003, and was browsing bookshelves, spotted the Thief, read the blurb, debated for five minutes over whether to buy it or not and finally decided that I was desperate enough for something to read. I then read it and realised how I lucky I'd been to pick it up.

4. Favorite character. Why?

Gen, obviously, but I do like Eddis, just for who she is and how she does it. Sophos and the Magus are great characters too. Apart from MWT's books, my favourite characters include Ralph, from 'Cuckoo in the nest', Christopher Chant, by DWJ, and Dr Watson (Sherlock Holmes comes a close second), by Arthur Conan Doyle. Severus Snape will always hold a fond place in my heart.

5. Your favorite band, or site, or book, or whatever: recommend something to us that we might not normally know about

At the moment I'm keen on Little Birdy, Belle & Sebastian, and the Arctic Monkeys. Deathclock.com has always been funny. And in book terms, read 'The Changeover' by Margaret Mahy, anything by Diana Wynne Jones, and try 'Frederica' by Georgette Heyer.

6. Your most used messenger name (and of course, which messenger it's on)

rowanatheblerg on yahoo IM, my MSN name changes every week.

7. Favorite moment/line in the books

Oh, lots of Gen's witticisms ("I'm a lot more important than anyone else here" was one that stuck :D). The end of the first book was fantastic, for obvious reasons.

8. Pick a theme song for any one of the characters, or an overall book. (Maybe we could make this into a mix cd!)

*jumps* Such a good idea! A soundtrack! Um, yes, nothing really springs to mind. Perhaps 'Worry about the wind' by HAL, which seems to have a similar tone to parts of QoA. Something by Coldplay would go well. (check out their sites)

9. Favorite color! XDD

Dark purple.

10. What do you want to be when you get big?

Gah! A question I've been asking myself for about two years now. I'm a few months away from having to make a final decision, and it's either going to be Law, Medicine, or English at University for me. So, not a difficult choice then. :)

11. What do you want for your birthday?

An mp3 player. :) Or a car. But I'll settle for some chocolate.

12. What's your favorite smell?

I have to agree with [livejournal.com profile] fabrical_chemist, flower power all the way.

13. Name something awesome about you, and in the spirit of Gen, totally and shamelessly brag about it.

My life's a little too boring to have anything to brag about, I'm afraid. :)

1. Cassidy/Principessa
2. New York State
3. I live in a very small town, and the children's section of the library was very tiny as well -- YA and children's were all mixed. And I found The Thief there. (And I eventually got them to make a YA section, but that's something else.)
4. Gen. Because he's GEN.
5. Gaelic Storm is one of the best bands ever. They mix traditional Irish songs with ones they wrote that just sound traditional and others that sound like regular band songs. Also, "Howl's Moving Castle" by Diana Wynne Jones.
6. Well, I have Trillian so I can be on them ALL AT ONCE. Seriously, I recommend it. FeniceVerde on AIM.
7. I'm trying to remember the exact line the queen says when they come into the court of Eddis. But that's it.
8. Oh, man. I have no idea.
9. Blue!
10. A linguist/archaeologist/write.
11. The Dirty Rotten Scoundrels OBC recording.
12. Vanilla.
13. I read very well and quite fast; I pick up languages like *that*, and I'm told that I write well. And I make good icons (unfortunately, they are hidden amongst the bad ones).

My response.

L'arc en ciel, Gackt, Chemistry, Orange Range, Asian Kung-fu Generation. (All Japanese Bands, But that's what i listen too.) As for books, try anything by Anne Bishop or Laurell K. Hamiliton. Oh, and check out some of those bands. They really are awesome.

IUFerrisgirl on Aim. I never have much of an imagination when it comes to names.

Yeah, i've just been rereading the Jewels Trilogy along with the Invisible Ring and Dreams made Flesh. I love them all. But i have a feeling that Anne won't be writing anymore. But have you read The Pillars of hte World trilogy it is also very good, it just doesn't have awesome male characters Like Daemon or Lucivar.

Theme song

Date: 2/1/06 02:51 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
It's funny you ask the question about a theme song for characters, because the first time I heard "It's For the Best" by Straylight Run, I thought, "Oh, that's Eugenides." (at least during his QOA days) Great song, by the way. Lyrics:

"It's For The Best"

It takes more time than I've ever had,
Drains the life from me,
Makes me want to forget,
As young as I was,
I felt older back then,
More disciplined,
Stronger and certain,
But I was scared to death of eternity,
I was saved by grace,
But destroyed by naivety,
And I lied to myself,
And said it was for the best.

And now faith is replaced with a logic so cold
I've disregarded what I was,
Now that I'm older,
And I know much more than I did back then,
But the more I learn,
The more I can't understand,
And I've become content with this life that I lead,
Where I drink too much and don't believe in much of anything,
And I lie to myself,
And say it's for the best,

We're moving forward,
But holding ourselves back,
And we're waiting on something that will never come.

Ooh! Great Idea, I'll go next!

1. Your name, gender (for pronouns sake!)

Caroline (girl obviously)

2. General Geographic Location (as specific or non-specific as you like)

I live in Toronto Canada, and was born here

3. How were you introduced to the books?

lol I think I told the story on another thread: basically I was wandering around the library on a boring summer day and bumped into one of the shelves, causing a book landslide to fall on my head - the Theif and the Qoa being among the books. :)

4. Favorite character. Why?

Tied between Gen and Attolia right now. I love Gen for the same reasons as everyone else, but I just can't help admiring Attolia. Shes so strong despite all the pressure everyone puts on her, and at the same time really human too. I also really like some of the new characters from KOA alot too; they just seem to have so much depth.

5. Your favorite band, or site, or book, or whatever: recommend something to us that we might not normally know about

Oooh tough one. I bascially listen to anything across the wide music spectrum, from Fallout boys to Usher (yes, I know!) to Kelly Clarkson to Kelly Clarkson, lol. (also a closet Bollywood fan; my background, what can I say, lol)

6. Your most used messenger name (and of course, which messenger it's on)

I'm carolinekassee on yahoo, and my MSN name changes periodically with my mood, lol.

7. Favorite moment/line in the books

Ah, so many! The bleating goat part in Qoa comes to mind, the part in the Theif where the magnus beats Gen with a riding crop (his reaction is just so funny, especially after you read the book again) and many really funny ones from KOA. Funny moments are the best.

8. Pick a theme song for any one of the characters, or an overall book. (Maybe we could make this into a mix cd!)

Absolutely no idea, I'll have to think on it. Would it be one that represents all the books, or just one or two?

9. Favorite color! XDD

Clear, of course ;) No seriously, its blue, light blue.

10. What do you want to be when you get big?

Well since I'm pretty big on the Sciences,I'm definetly heading for Medicine.

11. What do you want for your birthday?

A new digi camera; mine got busted when I dropped it in the toilet, and now it sparks dangerously every time a press the button, lol(long story)

12. What's your favorite smell?

I think you people said it already - flowers (lavendar I guess ) Also cake. I love the smell of cake ;)

13. Name something awesome about you, and in the spirit of Gen, totally and shamelessly brag about it.

I dunno anything awesome, but I do have hobbies, lol I play two instruments (piano and violin) play tennis, where I'm NOT good, but stick around to annoy people, and volunteer and stuff, but thats all. Not that exciting.

So yeah, hi everyone *waves* :)

Finally I am around to answer this thing! You did an excellent job, [livejournal.com profile] fabricalchemist.

1. Your name, gender (for pronouns sake!)
Robin, female.

2. General Geographic Location (as specific or non-specific as you like)
Maryland, United States of America, Eastern Time. It's 8:20 AM right now.

3. How were you introduced to the books?
I was in a bookstore, and browsing around because I didn't have a specific item in mind. Looking, perusing the books I had not seen before...sitting on a plastic shelf on the end of a bookcase was The Queen of Attolia. Its cover was eyecatching (it's the paperback depicting the scene in the boat with Attolia), and so I picked it up, read the back, and thought it looked great. I really wanted it. I started to go the the cash register...and then I saw that it said "sequel to The Thief." Oh no! I have a personal prejudice about reading books out of sequence. I debated with myself, after looking and not finding The Thief, and finally ended up buying it, only to shelve it at home until I finally found a copy of tT, a few months later. I read it, and while I liked it, found it to be much different than what I had expected QoA to be. I was confused. Then I read QoA, and it proceeded to become my favorite book ever.
End of story. ^_~

4. Favorite character. Why?
It's so difficult to choose, but in the end I must agree with everyone else and go with Eugenides. He is so likeable, and so complex, and so funny and so conflicted; it's pretty much impossible not to have him as a favorite. But I also like Eddis a lot, and I like Attolia, simply because I'll never forget how much she scared me when I first read the books and how astonished I was when it all turned out like it did.
The problem with choosing is that all of MWT's characters are so amazing. We get to know them much more directly than most book characters - it's that showing, not telling, thing. We spend time with them. It builds strong relationships. ^_^

5. Your favorite band, or site, or book, or whatever: recommend something to us that we might not normally know about
Well, I love A Series of Unfortunate Events more than is healthy, but I think you probably know about those books. Diana Wynne Jones seems to be well-appreciated here. What else can I remember?...I really like the band The Magnetic Fields, who do experimental pseudopop sort of thing, and I really like the Discworld books series, and I really like Green Mansions by W.H. Hudson. Oh, yes. Do, please, read Green Mansions. It's excellent.

6. Your most used messenger name (and of course, which messenger it's on)
coricurbob, on either YIM or AIM. Most used indeed; I use that name for everything!

7. Favorite moment/line in the books
So. Hard. To choose. I am abulic. Auck. But I am going to choose a scene from King of Attolia, which I just finished reading, and I won't post it here in consideration of those who haven't read it yet. But it was stunning. The entirety of KoA currently comes in second.

8. Pick a theme song for any one of the characters, or an overall book. (Maybe we could make this into a mix cd!)
I can't decide! I am so bad at remembering things when I need to!

9. Favorite color! XDD
It changes with mood. Currently, at this moment, I am leaning toward a light aqua blue, greenish.

10. What do you want to be when you get big?
I am 5'2" and not likely to get any bigger, but if I ever achieve a career, I desperately want to be a librarian. Desperately.

11. What do you want for your birthday?
I don't actually celebrate birthdays - I'm a Jehovah's Witness - but if you ever feel like getting me a gift, it is not possible to go wrong with either books or earrings. ^_^

12. What's your favorite smell?
I love lemon. Lemony things, also: lemon cookies, lemongrass, lemon Pledge. Mmm.

13. Name something awesome about you, and in the spirit of Gen, totally and shamelessly brag about it.
I read out loud extremely well. I have an aptitude for sesquipedalian linguistics. I can fake extreme logic pretty well.

Hoorah.

3. How were you introduced to the books? In th eperiod of about 2 months 4 different people reccomended The Thief to me, until it got to the point where I had to read it. I read it, loved it, and promptly forgot who the people who reccomened it to me were so that I could discuss it with them.

1. Diana, female.
2. Philadelphia suburbs, Pennsylvania.
3. I read Queen of Attolia when it first came out. I was browsing the YA fantasy section (even though I've left my teens behind oh, about 5 years ago), and saw it. The title was catchy, the synopsis interesting, and the first 50 pages enchanting. I only read Thief after-- perhaps that's why I like Irene and QoA the best?
4. Irene. She's such a mix of harsh and soft, good and bad, sorrow and (buried) joy. I especially like how she's developed more of a sense of humor in KoA.
5. Hm... well, just in case people are interested, I did register last week a new Yahoo Groups called "MWTurner". That was before I knew this existed, but I'm sure it can coexist or not, as you all please!
6. PrncssDi16, AIM (Please excuse the utter girlyness of the screenname; I really was 16 at the time)
7. [SPOILER for KoA] -->

When Irene offers Gen her wine cup, to save the poor Eddisean ambassador from expiring of frustration.

8. Uninvited, for Attolia's pov of Gen in QoA. He (perhaps by the hands of the gods), snuck in her heart and love all uninvited...

3. How were you introduced to the books? I was the librarians 'pet' in my middle school and she let me have the first pick of new books as they came in. When I was in 6th grade she let me take the Thief home... I fell in love with it immediately and it's been my favorite book/series since. I was... maybe 11 at the time.
4. Favorite character. Why? Gen! He's been such an inspiration for my own personality... he was (and still is!) my hero. XP
5. Your favorite band, or site, or book, or whatever: I love the website me and my partner in crime, Bidelle Riyushi run as a studio for our artwork. NMHB Studios (http://www.NMHB.net)
6. Your most used messenger name: Ravensthief on AIM.
7. Favorite moment/line in the books: "Like a tool, for instance, a very well-behaved hammer, I stretched out by the fire and went to sleep" from The Thief. It is the one line that always stuck with me as summing up MWT's style of ironic writing... It's the style in which I have tried to imitate my own writing..
8. Pick a theme song for any one of the characters, or an overall book. "Master of Disguise" by Arcturus has good lyrics, but not really similar music.. hmmm... I'd have to think about this one... even the lyrics don't really fit Gen... they make the Master of Disguise (http://www.elyrics.net/read/a/arcturus-lyrics/master-of-disguise-lyrics.html) sound too evil for Gen...
9. Favorite color! Red > Dark Green > Red-orange> Silver> all other colors. XP
