Tributes

I've been waiting for a lull in Sounis posts to bring this up, but we are such a chatty bunch I've concluded it won't happen anytime soon. Since I really do want feedback from others on this, here goes ...

In the author notes to the most recent edition of Thief, Megan commented on how she pays tributes to writers who have influenced her the most – Rosemary Sutcliff, Diana Wynne Jones, and Joan Aiken.

I have found several R Sutcliff tributes – The Thief has the emerald dolphin ring, and KoA has the fibula pin from Mark of the Horse Lord (btw, I found the scene in KoA much more chilling after reading Mark of the Horse Lord).

I also noted a quote from Howl’s Moving Castle in KoA (“What a lie that was,” he said.) but did not see the one from Howl in Thief.

So what other tributes and quotes have people found in these books?

Ha, Peggy! The one in Thief is the same line! "What a lie that was." In Thief, he says it after telling someone that the King's prison wasn't that bad.

Peggy! I just wrote out a long comment, and LJ deleted it! it was pretty much rambling about how i never caught any of the tributes because i hadn't read the books they were a tribute to. now that i know what they are and have read a few of the books, they really pop out, particularly the emerald ring. If you look in the tags, i think Megan's challenge for whoever could find the Sutcliff quote first is still there

Ooh! I hate it when that happens!

WHenever I'm going to post something long I make myself copy it to the clipboard first. Everytime I don't my post is sacrificed to the lj,email monster.

Fascinating.

I recognize the ones mentioned, but...drat. I'm going to have to reread. I have some very good new books to try, too.
Sutcliff I've only read 2, but I definitely remember the dolphin ring. Which was that? Sword Song? Hmm.
I guess I need to read more Sutcliffe. As for Aiken, I must not have read enough of hers either. Wolves of Willoughby Chase I'd think I'd remember...maybe not. After all it took this to think through the "what a lie THAT was" familiarity in HMC. Yes, I read it recently, but never made the connection. I am ashamed. "Grieved, shocked."

Tributes...huh.

I love tributes. I love throwing in little lines and waiting to see if anyone recognizes them. That's the writer in me speaking, just letting everyone know. It's fun!

that being said, the only book I've read that she's tributed was Howl, but I completely didn't notice that.

I've only read Sutcliffe's Outcast and Eagle of the Ninth. I could never really get into The Lantern Bearers.

Is Howl's Moving Castle worth reading?

Anything by Diana Wynne Jones is worth reading!!! Howl is a blast.

OMG! You haven't read Howl yet??? Go immediately to library, cancel all appointments and phonecalls, and do some seriously pleasureable rainy-day reading. Lots of fun!!!
I'm embarrassed to say I didn't recognize which line Gen quoted, though..... :-)
I love tributes too!! I gotta check out Sutcliffe and Mark of the Horse Lord now....

Jade Sabre, like your name :-)

Right then. Forget English homework. I'm off to Amazon to read an extract. If only the library wasn't closed at half past eight in the evening!

There is a second book to Howl's. It is quite good, but not what the reader is expecting. It has the same sort of feel as KoA does. And Kingdom Hearts 2. Sort of a "Who the BLANK are you? You are not who I was waiting so long for! Get out and give me my main characters!!" But as you read on, you get over it and come to adore the new guy. I recomend it. ^_^ That is, if you are in a reading mood and liked the first one.

I'll second that, and add that the title is "Castle in the Air." Enjoy.

Yes, nice analogy, elvenangeljin. Howl is one of my favorites, and I read it because of folks here at Sounis. I was very surprised at Castle in the Air but liked it very much, too.

Thanks so much for the posts. I went to the bookstore today and bought Diana Wynne Jones' Howl and the sequel. I wasn't able to find any Rosemary Sutcliff...Chapters online it is, then. I hadn't realized that Megan wrote tributes into her novels, so I'm looking forward to scouring the pages.
Thanks again!

I read Howl's Moving Castle in a day...okay night. I noticed the line Megan used for a tribute, and also noticed that Gen and Howl have some similarities: the whole dodging as much responsibility as possible, but owning up beautifully, and with creativity, when necessary. Some other ones too...I'm just too tired to remember right now.
Diana Wynne Jones has a different writing style and writes for a slightly different audience, but I enjoyed it and will be reading other books by her as well....Now, onto E. Nesbit! I'm going to have to order in Rosemary Sutcliff.
