I'm re-reading The Thief, and reached page 8 when I noticed this:

The Magus to Gen: "'We might someday attain a relationship of mutual respect,' he said softly. First, I thought, I will see gods walking the earth."

True. He does. And then they do.

For some reason I get a very big kick out of that.

I always loved that line about Gen being content with his 'half-swallowed words' after the magus makes that crack about the dialects of Sounisian and Attolian street scum being the same. I just about died when I reread it.

When I first read The Thief and i skipped half of it and then read the end, I was confused: why is he writing this book for a library and what did he think of the Magus at the start and at the end?

and then I reread and was like: OH, now i see the hint.

It's so fun when you spot things.

"Gen, you viper." *grins* Mutual respect...

I recently lent Theif to a friend, who is now reading KoA, and she made an interesting comment about it--something along the lines that she felt conned by the narration, in a way, because it was the first book where the narrator didn't give everything away until the end. But she liked it very much.

This is one of my favorite lines from the book. I also have always like the "well behave hammer" remark.

I just got to the part where the Magus said, of the old records, " . . . although they survive no more. Once I elicited the information I needed, they were destroyed . . ." and the historian and librarian in me rose in a fury far more impressive even than Attolia at her scariest, and turned flaming eyes toward the Magus and turned him into a little smoking pile of cinders with a look.

Destroyed ancient records???????????????????????????????? Aieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

It makes me snidely glad that on the next page he makes all those insulting comments about Gen which must, when later he realized the truth about Gen, have caused him to kick the sheets at night as he mentally relived them and recognized that Gen must have been smirking inwardly at everything the Magus said.
