My contributions to fandom tend to be a little bizarre.
I like to write "filk" rock, tribute songs to Lord of the Rings and other fantasy favorites (including 2 Queen's Thief songs we're still finishing producing...but soon!)
I also spin. I've made yarn tributing Haku of Spirited Away, Laputa of Castle in the Sky, Hans Christian Andersons Steadfast Tin Soldier (the Ballerina)...
I blog about them (as well as posting them to Etsy) at Wordpress.

Under River Aracthus I made from a gift of dyed wool. When I racked my brain about what it reminded me of, it struck me:
"That god! In the Temple!"
Oceanus's robe, in the watertones of his domain. I think he's the one who checks to be sure Gen hasn't left a spot?
Anyway, I haven't blogged this one, but here are some pictures:

And I thought it was just cool because it was blue. Now it's Oceanus blue. FOR THE WIN.

Date: 6/28/09 02:24 am (UTC)do you spin with a wheel (I would guess, to get that much yarn)?
and do you dye it before or after spinning? If before, I bet the carded wool was drop dead lovely.

Date: 6/28/09 03:25 am (UTC)I spun each strand on a light-weight spindle, though. (The spindle's a pencil stuck through a Mason Jar lid. ^_^)
I was given the roving already dyed; it was "hand-painted" I think, so it had more variation in color which produces the subtle shades--and yes. It was gorgeous when I got it. I have almost nothing to do with it, really...

Date: 6/28/09 03:42 am (UTC)They have a deucedly frustrating way of slipping down despite being glued when dropped on a hard surface, though (my bedroom floor's concrete). It just occurred to me that it may be time to upgrade...

Date: 6/29/09 12:16 pm (UTC)I just changed my username to match my blog/Etsy/business name: gossamersong.
Find me! My favorite group there is the Folklore and Fairy Tales group (in my profile, of course). They do knit-alongs themed on fairy tales or such things (right now, A Midsummer Night's Dream!) and have fun discussion about fantasy bookish things. A lot of the same things I like about this community actually: intelligent people, open fandom, friendly welcomes...
Of course, I've been plotting for days to bring up the Queen's Thief books, and hope to strike on a method soon.

Date: 6/29/09 12:17 pm (UTC)Well, I had nothing to do with the color, but at least I didn't ruin the wool by spinning it more badly than usual. ^_^

Date: 6/29/09 04:24 am (UTC)I wish I had dragged you to my school when I had my Colonial exhibit set up, with the spinning wheel that I don't know how to use!
The words you use are strange to me - "roving," for example. Clearly I know nothing about spinning!

Date: 6/29/09 12:20 pm (UTC)So I'm kinda your gal! Though there are plenty of ladies out there with lots of expertise. Next time you do that, try and find a spinner's guild in the area, maybe...

P.S. Nice photograph, too, which is really important. Your lighting seems to show your art to best advantage, no?

Date: 6/29/09 04:36 pm (UTC)I love getting to see people discover new worlds.
Yes!
Handspun yarn is a reviving art, and I like to bring my own particular brand of geekery to it. Knitters and crocheters can get one-of-a-kind yarn that machines can't make from handspinners.
I actually posted on my own journal a bit of a treatise on some of the other geek spinners I've found on the handcraft-vendor site Etsy, if you wanna come see some other peoples' takes. ^-^
~ the photo: I was amazed how cool that one turned out! It's perfect and looks very nice in the shop, too. The yarn is so floppy, it photographed thematically as well.

Date: 7/1/09 01:46 am (UTC)I don't knit...and I especially don't knit with yarn someone may yet buy from me. ^_^
...I'll keep you in mind for when I take up making knobbly objects of dubious function. We'll call them Dobbyhats and leave it at that.

Date: 7/3/09 05:58 pm (UTC)It is someone who's a Thief fan, and a friend of mine on Ravelry. The Folklore and Fairy Tales group there has discussions that make me think of Sounis...I'm sure she'll let me see what she does with it, and be fine with me posting it here.
I'm starting a Raven King yarn right now that is going to be gorgeous, I think...lossa black, with shiny spots. Yay geekery!
