Ok, Gen is part of the royal family of Eddis, right? Is it on his mother's side or his father's side (or both)? I just can't remember if the Thieves were related to the sovereigns or what.

Ok I believe that Gen is Helen's cousin on the father's side. MoW was the brother of the past Eddis (according to what I gathered from the Thief short story).

I think you should check with the other Sounisians just in case, or the Thief short story.

Man, I REALLY need my copy of TT back. This is killing me coming up with all these ideas and then not being able to find the answers to all my questions. *pulls out hair* I may just have to check out a copy from work (I work at a bookstore) so I can check myself.

And the Thief was just a random person who went and stole the Gift? Was that it? But did it become hereditary at some point and kind of pointless, like it'd been a while since someone had stolen the Gift before Gen?

I think he's related on both sides. I think. Don't quote me on that, because my books are at my dad's, so I can't check and make sure. I would be slightly surprised if he weren't related on both sides, given the small population of Eddis, and the fact that royals like to marry their cousins.

Actually...if I remember correctly it was a random person many centuries before but then the Gift got lost and the title became hereditary, so Gen's desendants passed it on, father to son. And then MoW married the Thief's daughter and they had Gen...THE AWESOMEST QUEEN'S THIEF EVAH.

Gen's father is Helen's uncle, and after Gen wallops Teleus at the end of KoA he says something along these lines (pardon the paraphrase): "Like every man, I had two grandfathers. One of mine was Eddis."

So I conclude from this that Gen's father and Helen's father (who preceded her as sovereign and therefore was most likely the son of the king before that) were brothers.

I'm not sure if Gen's mother was part of the royal family at all before her marriage. If she wasn't, that might explain why so many of Gen's uncles and cousins and so on seem to disdain her -- I think there was something at the end of TT about Gen's relatives suddenly deciding he was something like his father after all.

On the other hand, a lot of the court of Eddis seems to be interrelated, so Gen's mother may have been connected somewhere, too!

Also, that's really interesting-now that I'm thinking about it-that Helen inherited the kingship (or queenship in her case, lol), when the king had a brother still living. An obviously awesome brother *MoW love*. Hm. I don't know. Maybe it's not that strange, but it just seems strange to me. Also, I haven't read that little story about baby!Helen getting visited by the gods in a while, so maybe something is said or hinted about there.

That is interesting -- I think it's usual for the child of a king to have precedence over the brother of a king. But that might conceivably only apply to children who are sons; it is interesting that Helen still had precedence over her male relatives. (The kingdom of Eddis is totally the best country on the peninsula. I am so convinced of this.)

...On the other hand, I am now wondering why Sophos, and not his father, who is the king's brother, is the heir of Sounis. Unless the king specifically designated him as such, deliberately skipping over Sophos's father? Hunh.

There is definitely a scene in TT where the magus is quizzing his apprentices about how succession works in Eddis, and I think Ambiades compares it to how things work in Sounis. Maybe there are relevant details there? I'm away from my books at the moment.

Hmmm I believe that sometimes kings purposely skip over their closer relatives to make sure that the next heir is completely under his control and that his work will be continued the way the present king wants it to be. The king's brother may have another agenda or opinions that vary from Sounis's so he got an heir who he could almost certainly influence.

That's kinda what I was thinking. But all of Helen's brothers die anyway, so I guess that's how that works.

Ack! Another reason I need my book back. I have got to re-read this series. There is so much to take in and it's the kind of books where you'll see a little deeper and catch something else you missed that last go 'round.

You're probably right. I guess I'm thinking of greedy brothers who would try to grab the power for themselves either by taking the throne or just controlling their young nephews/nieces. Not that our beloved MoW would do that, but I'm sure it's happened before in real life.
