I've been reading aloud the Queen's Thief series to my friend (who is called, oddly enough, Gen...), and we just finished the first one and I've just started reading the second book aloud to him. And and and we've been arguing about how old Gen is in the books. I've always sort of imagined it as him being 16ish in The Thief, 17-18ish in QoA, and then, like, 19 in KoA. I thought I would ask your Collective Professional Opinion first though. So, dear Sounisians (is that the correct term? Hmm.) what do you think?

Also, d'you think I should give Nahuseresh a Nasal, Annoying Voice, or a Cultured, Annoying Voice?

Oh, the age question. That has been discussed many times hereabouts. I think most of us generally agree with the ages you've suggested, or mayby a year-ish older. Also keep in mind that QoA takes place over a 2 year period. (I still want to steal in_my_niteshirt's markings that keep track of the passage of time through QoA. Next Utah Thief-Con!)

I think a cultured, annoying voice would be appropriate. He's supposed to be *hot* (ewww); in order to get around how distasteful we all find him I think he should at least have a cultured voice ;D

My vote's definitely for Cultured, Annoying Voice.
Nasal, Annoying Voice either screams old! or whiny!, of which Nahusey is neither. His ideal voice would probably be one with a pointed beard, but I understand those can be difficult to enunciate.

I'll give the age a shot, I guess. This has been researched (a lot), but I am sure that there's some mistake I haven't caught. So...

Helen is about to be crowned Eddis in the short story from Disney magazine. (We are given Eugenides' age, nine.) From the short story "Eddis," you can decipher that she is five years older than Eugenides. And in "The Queen of Attolia" (two years into that) Eddis has been queen for seven years. So, five plus seven (twelve) plus nine (twenty-one) is the age of Eddis at that time. And Eugenides would be sixteen then. (But that seems too young, I know.) And all the numbers are below.


Eddis
14 when crowned queen
18 in TT?
19 at start of QoA
21 in KoA?

Eugenides
9 when Eddis is crowned queen
13 in TT(possibly 14)
14 at start of QoA (or 15)
16/17 in KoA

If I got ANYTHING wrong, PLEASE tell me!!!! (because the age theory is SO important to everything!)

I agree, Gen was 10 in the story. And I also believe we know that, if we are assuming that the old king died immediately after the events of the Thief! short story, a minimum of 5 years must have passed between then and The Thief, since that's the length of time Helen had been on the throne by then. So Gen is 15 at the youngest in the first book; that would put him at 16, 17, and going-on-18 in the second book and only a few months older in the third book. I think one thing that was agreed in earlier discussions of the all-important age topic was that this is just a minimum. We can't assume that the former Eddis did die when Gen was ten, since all it says in the story is that he was "ill." And obviously, since we know the seasons for all of the events of the 3 main books but not which season Gen's birthday is in, his actual numerical age could be a little bit off.

Please help!

I set up a livejournal account specially so I could read this story -- but I still can't! I get an error message that I am not authorized to access this protected information. What do I still need to do?

I'm quite anxious to read the story -- I know that it was published in Disney Adventures magazine back in 2000, but I can't get hold of any back issues that old.

Can you help me, or let me know what I'm doing wrong?

Hi Deirdre! It looks like you have to actually "join" sounis. Look towards the top of this page at the icons and see if one says something like "join this community". Once you join, you should be able to access the post with the story. If you still have problems let me know and I'll email the story to you.

He should have a beautiful, suave voice. Very diplomatic... at least, that's how I imagined his voice = ) There shouldn't be anything to suggest the snake he is.heh heh. Unless it's in hie eyes... which you can't really HEAR. I think your age guesses are pretty accurate, but why can't anyone ask M.W.
