A Conspiracy of Kings Paperback
Aug. 22nd, 2011 03:08 pmGUYS!!!!!!! Guess what? I finally received A Conspiracy of Kings in paperback! I was soooo surprised, because my bookstore wasn't supposed to have it until August 23, but since I pre-ordered, I got to have it sooner!
AND THERE'S A STORY!!! It's called "Destruction" and it's about the throwing of Hamiathes's Gift in the volcano. You guys have to read it, because I feel like it's peppered with the typical MWT subtlety and that I completely missed the whole point of it, but it's so beautiful, and I was so excited reading it that I barely even understood the last part.
There were the Queen of Attolia and Eugenides (and they were like... looking at each other the WHOLE time) and Queen of Eddis and there's even King of Sounis!!! He even had a little paragraph all to himself!!!
Oh and there are more extras!
Unfortunately, a map isn't one of them.
But there's a character list!
And three whole pages of book recommendations!!!
Join me in my fangirlish SQUEEEEEEEE of delight!
**Edit: Oh, it's five whole pages of book recs. See, I'm so excited I can't even count.
**Edit 2: Hey! The kind lopezuna gave this link here for a copy of ACok. Go ahead and read it guys!

Date: 8/22/11 10:45 pm (UTC)You're welcome. And yeah, it's really beautiful, but I'm trying not to read it again until a few of you guys have read it, otherwise I'll be stuck in dumb confusion, because everyone knows I can't figure out anything without Sounis!!

THIS MADE MY DAY

Date: 8/23/11 10:00 pm (UTC)But what to talk about first???
It was fascinating to learn about the actual ceremony and how it had to be done all religiously and such. Also what are Trade Houses? They are politically important enough to send representatives along with countries. Very interesting.
And yay for Gen/Irene eyeing each other the whole time!
Also, everyone was described by their titles, even the Thief.
And how did he know/suspect/make an educated guess that the Gift's powers of certainty would vanish the instant it was destroyed? He sounds like such a professional on all things magical, in this story. Which I guess, compared to everyone else, he is.
Also SOUNIS PARAGRAPH! we needed more King of Sounis. I was never satisfied by his untimely death.
And the torque Eddis was wearing sounds way more fashionable than Gen's leather hair thong thingy.
Umm... I think that's all for now. More as they strike me. Thank you so much again for posting this or I would never have known!

Date: 8/24/11 12:47 am (UTC)I know. I actually thought that all Eddis had to do was drop it into the mouth of the volcano. Little was I thinking at that time, haha! Now that I've read it, it never occurred to me how important destroying it would be, unless they wanted someone to come across it and rip Helen off from the throne.
I'm not sure what Trade Houses are... maybe the countries they trade with?
Gen and Irene cannot keep their eyes off of each other!! It's sad though, because I'm sure Irene at that time doesn't feel anything for him yet. Actually I thought she might feel very resentful, seeing how he STOLE that out of her land, and now the Eddisians are waving it under her nose, trying to destroy it.
Yeah, Gen sounds so... omniscient, haha! What I didn't understand though was the very last part. What was Attolia's fierce belief in the gift? I mean until Moira showed up, did she NOT believe in the gods? And supposing she did anyway (and not worshiped them, like she said) what does that have to do with the destruction of the gift? Was her belief supposed to fade away with it? And what did Gen see in her face to make him *know* that she doesn't believe anymore? Was she happy to know that Gen's no longer immortal, so that she can have the opportunity to exact a revenge on him?
I don't get it, somebody HELP MEEEY!!!
Yeah, Sounis seemed like a villain that I could have... erm, liked, had I gotten to know him better. But the paragraph just showed him as greedy as he always was in TT.
I loved how Helen was dressed in this!

Date: 8/24/11 02:38 am (UTC)Yeah, true. I think it's funny/cute that he didn't even care that he doesn't worship the Great Goddess, he's still so concerned about "saving" her wonderful gift to mankind! Oh, Sounis. Tsk tsk. We all know you really just want to be immortal and rule Eddis.
What was Attolia's fierce belief in the gift? I mean until Moira showed up, did she NOT believe in the gods?
I think she and mostly everyone else who would have been at that ceremony did not believe in the gods until they came to Eddis and saw the Gift for themselves; then, because of the gift's power, they did believe. For a while. But it went away again as soon as the gift was destroyed. Only Gen and Helen, who have seen the gods independently of this experience, would still have a reason to believe in them. (Yet. Because eventually Moira visits Irene, as you said, and now she believes, too, as she explains in QoA.)
But I think the facial change that clued Gen in to the change of opinion was just... a shift from avid attention and solemnity, as in "This is a big deal, this ceremony! I must watch!", to sudden indifference, as in "This is so silly. Why are we standing on this mountain at 5 a.m., again?" I envision Irene going from very serious to suddenly sarcastic, and rolling her eyes or lifting her eyebrow or something. Maybe that's just me.

Date: 8/24/11 11:29 pm (UTC)Ah, okay. Thanks for explaining. That could be it. *le sigh* So simple. I think I was over-analyzing it, since he looked at *her* specifically.
Hey, this is TLE forgetting her password...

Date: 8/25/11 06:59 am (UTC)I think the world of SEA is on the cusp of the equivalent to the Enlightenment: things are becoming more scientific, and most people do not believe in literal gods anymore. I mean, let's face it, even many people who do believe in God in our world wouldn't expect to find say an oar from Noah's Arc, proving the old stories are LITERALLY TRUE, or see physical manifestations of Him (Her/It according to your preference).
