Join us tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 2 as we begin our reread of all the QT short stories as a build-up to Moira's Pen. We'll begin with the stories Thief! and Eddis this week. If you don't have copies, you can read all the short stories here.

You can find the chat in The Conspiracy Room at 6 PM CT/7 PM ET. Password to enter the room is here.

This is just the first of our short story rereads and chats. Look at the entire schedule here, and gear up for the masked Halloween chat and Release Party later this month. We'll see if we can convince a certain author to join us for some of the festivities.

Is anyone interested in helping create a "timeline" of events for the entire QT series?

*SPOILERS WILL ABOUND*

I realize many of the events have no specified time, but I still want to get things as straight as possible. I looked into different timeline creators online, but most of them demanded actual dates and few of them would be collaborative. In the end, I decided it would probably be the most simple solution to create a shared google doc and just add events in the form of a expanding table.

Anyway, if you want to contribute, click this link:

While you're pacing the house, waiting for your precious copy of Return of the Thief, take a look at this synopsis of the entire series, written by Tor's Natalie Zutter. She does an excellent job of describing each book and how they all fooled us, and explaining the meanings of the different myths and stories. It's full of spoilers for the first five books, but I bet you've read them all.

More than once. Or, more than eight times, even.

A British friend of mine brought it to my attention that the story at the end of my hardback copy of TaT was not in her British copy. It's at the very end and it's titled, "Envoy." It's super short, but I thought you all might like to read it if you haven't. I've added it to the Short Story post, and you can read it here.

You have to be a member of the [livejournal.com profile] sounis community to read the short stories.

Edited to add: the story IS in all versions of the book; my friend was mistaken.

I got my set of new editions and they are really, really lovely in person! But did anyone else notice they contain FOUR DIFFERENT THICK AS THIEVES EXCERPTS?!!

Do you think there's any specific order in which one should read them?

(If you're trying to avoid all spoilers, jsyk, the character glossary at the back of each book also includes some new characters.)

Here is a spoilery place for everyone to discuss "The Knife Dance" a short story that will appear in the new edition of QoA. Please, keep spoilers contained to this post or hide spoilers under an LJ-cut with a clear warning for at least a month. That way everyone has time to get a chance to read it. HERE are Sounis's other spoiler polices and instructions for how to use an the Lj-cut.

Please, discuss "Wine Shop" in it's own POST, and do not post spoilers for it on this page. Just in case someone has Queen but not King yet.

If you've never read the other short stories that take place in the QT universe, they are availble HERE for community members.

I've been thinking about tragedies and happy endings as it relates to main characters. I like happy endings, but I'm willing to go through the tragedy in the middle of a story with a character.

There was a discussion here about the difference between middle grade and YA, about how a middle grade character watches a friend go through the dark night of the soul, while in YA it's the main character going through this. But something that has bothered me about a lot of modern stories is the high body count of side characters for shock value, where the really, really awful stuff happens to other people, and our characters are the slightly luckier ones.

I just finished this novel (http://www.jowaltonbooks.com/books/the-just-city/), attracted by the concept of Greek gods time travelling to create Plato's Republic on Atlantis with robots. The results more than justified my interest - and the machinations of the two gods central to the story, Apollo and Athene, reminded me in some ways of the gods in Attolia/Eddis/Sounis, though of course as protagonists rather than flashes of divine lightning. In addition, the novel is gently paced, beautifully characterized, and brimming with philosophical conversations and drama.  It is the first of a planned trilogy, and ends in a thematic rather than plot resolution, but I'm sure readers of The Queen's Thief series are no stranger to this. :)

(Warning: Since the majority of the characters are slaves, and for other reasons, sexual violence features fairly heavily - in fact, the book starts off with an examination of the story of Apollo and Daphne. I found the exploration and moral approach to this violence thoughtful and well considered, but it is prominant. Reviews have been, in my opinion, a bit unduly focused on that aspect of the book, as I posted here: http://ibmiller.tumblr.com/post/114405602154/on-sexual-violence-in-jo-waltons-the-just-city, but did want to post the warning along with my recommendation.)

FIND THE MAGIC!

Tamora Pierce fans, here's one you're gonna love!

Full Cast Audio has recorded a dozen of Tammy's books. As we continue to sell down our CD stock, at this point we only have three titles remaining in stock - WILD MAGIC, EMPEROR MAGE, and MELTING STONES.

Each recording is approximately 8 hours, on 8 CDS. And (check out the rave reviews for each title!)

From now until Friday (or when they run out, whichever comes first) you can get each of these recordings for only $5 apiece!

Two notes:

1) While we hope you'll pick up some other titles along the way but that is absolutely not required.

2) If you want delivery by Christmas you need to opt for Priority Shipping.

Ready for another archaic analogy? You know how Beowulf and other ancient stories will take random tangents to talk about other people that no one cares about? Well, I was reading Beowulf  and came across this little side story. When Beowulf returns home victorious, the queen of the Geats is introduced, and the poem pauses to contrast her favorably against another Ice Queen who was quite cruel. As a fan of the Attolia books, this story becomes a whole lot more interesting:Read more... )

I had the most enlightening reading experience with the Queen of Attolia recently. After multiple times of reading this book, I finally think I grasp the larger significance of the story of Hespira and Horreon that Eddis tells to the Magus. Even then, there are two interpretations.

Author Jim Hines gave the keynote address at the Surrey International Writers’ Conference recently. He said lots of things I suspect most of us would agree with. His notes are here, along with links to the video on youtube:

Has anyone seen the animated movie EPIC? It's quite good and the animation is beyond amazing, but there's something I noticed..

Did Ronin remind anyone else of the MoW?
And Nod sort of remind anyone of Gen?

Just something I thought of when watching the movie!

My (lengthy and yet lacking) account of the event, for those interested. )

And hey, did anyone go to LeakyCon and see Megan there? If so, please tell us about it!

GUYS!!!!!!! Guess what? I finally received A Conspiracy of Kings in paperback! I was soooo surprised, because my bookstore wasn't supposed to have it until August 23, but since I pre-ordered, I got to have it sooner!

AND THERE'S A STORY!!! It's called "Destruction" and it's about the throwing of Hamiathes's Gift in the volcano. You guys have to read it, because I feel like it's peppered with the typical MWT subtlety and that I completely missed the whole point of it, but it's so beautiful, and I was so excited reading it that I barely even understood the last part.

There were the Queen of Attolia and Eugenides (and they were like... looking at each other the WHOLE time) and Queen of Eddis and there's even King of Sounis!!! He even had a little paragraph all to himself!!!

Oh and there are more extras!

Unfortunately, a map isn't one of them.

But there's a character list!

And three whole pages of book recommendations!!!

Join me in my fangirlish SQUEEEEEEEE of delight!

**Edit: Oh, it's five whole pages of book recs. See, I'm so excited I can't even count.

**Edit 2: Hey! The kind lopezuna gave this link here for a copy of ACok. Go ahead and read it guys!
