I have finished Return of the Thief, and really need to process this section from V2Ch3.  I was commenting on the main book discussion thread and realized my question was rapidly becoming too unwieldy for a simple discussion and decided to post as a separate thread.  I have tried this multiple times and haven't been able to get a single cut to work despite multiple approaches and versions, so I've done an lj-cut for each paragraph individually.

So the converstion between Sophos and Helen regarding whether Gen knew of Sounis's proposal and threat to give Hamiathe's stone to Gen if Helen proposed.  Which proposal are they talking about?  It sounds like it would have to be the proposal sent before The Thief that precipitated the events of the entire series, but then why on earth would Sounis choose Gen at this point?

So I have a friend who's reading the series for the first time, and he says that when he read The Thief, he thinks Gen drowned when the maze flooded and was revived through the powers of Hamiathe's Gift. I pointed out that the Gift's powers only work when it's given, not stolen...but he says that the gods GAVE Gen permission to take the Gift, and therefore it wasn't stolen, and therefore it granted him immortality, and therefore that's the reason he didn't drown.

This is not how I read that part AT ALL... Have I been interpreting the ending wrong for nineteen plus years????

So I finished the book! (They get scribblier as they go along, so sue me)

(I apologize in advance if this has been previously discussed)

Hey everyone, I'm rereading the series and, naturally, I stumble across parts I don't quite understand. Today the confusing part is in Queen of Attolia, page 21 (The greenwillow paperback, with Attolia in her green dress holding the hook):

"She had to consider that Eugenides, though he caused he no harm beyond stealing something she hadn't known she possessed, could become the measurable danger to her that he was to Sounis."

The part that interests me is the "stealing something she hadn't known she possessed." To what exactly is she referring? What object did he take that she didn't know about? I immediately think of her heart, but this line comes before the hand-chopping incident, and I always thought she fell in love with Eugenides after that. What did you guys make of it?

I remember there was a discussion on pry bars way back. In The Thief, Pol hands Gen a pry bar when he is breaking in the temple to find Hamiathes's Gift, and Gen mentions that it is his. We were wondering about the logistics of a thief carrying one around, since pry bars are big and heavy, and a thief needs to be fast and sneaky. Well, I was on countycomm.com drooling about some mini lighters they sell, and I ran into these little gems...

Dear Greenwillow Books (an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers),

Could you please do all of us Sounisians a HUGE favor and republish "The Thief" and "The Queen of Attolia" in hardcover to match "The King of Attolia" and "A Conspiracy of Kings"?

It is driving me crazy to have two paperback books and two hardcover books. They don't match! I would just buy the original hardcover versions of the first two book, except the artwork is only so-so, and it wouldn't really solve the problem of "matching". So, please just upgrade the paperback books that you currently have (which are super pretty) into hardcover.

And while you're at it, have someone touch up the artwork on "The Thief" just slightly to more accurately display Hamiathes' Gift. The one you have now is just enormous! ("That's what she said!")

I am terrified that I'm going to find a way to get the MWT to sign my copy of my favorite book ever, and it's just going to be a paperback copy! Argh!

So anyway, we need a matching set to be happy. Ok, thanks.

Be blessed in your endeavors.

Sincerely,

Jamie, AKA ReadsInTrees

GUYS!!!!!!! Guess what? I finally received A Conspiracy of Kings in paperback! I was soooo surprised, because my bookstore wasn't supposed to have it until August 23, but since I pre-ordered, I got to have it sooner!

AND THERE'S A STORY!!! It's called "Destruction" and it's about the throwing of Hamiathes's Gift in the volcano. You guys have to read it, because I feel like it's peppered with the typical MWT subtlety and that I completely missed the whole point of it, but it's so beautiful, and I was so excited reading it that I barely even understood the last part.

There were the Queen of Attolia and Eugenides (and they were like... looking at each other the WHOLE time) and Queen of Eddis and there's even King of Sounis!!! He even had a little paragraph all to himself!!!

Oh and there are more extras!

Unfortunately, a map isn't one of them.

But there's a character list!

And three whole pages of book recommendations!!!

Join me in my fangirlish SQUEEEEEEEE of delight!

**Edit: Oh, it's five whole pages of book recs. See, I'm so excited I can't even count.

**Edit 2: Hey! The kind lopezuna gave this link here for a copy of ACok. Go ahead and read it guys!

Rereading, I'm confused about things that I think I did/would've understood the first time through but can't remember. Don't hate me, lmao! Hopefully I'm not regurgitating questions...

1. When the magus (does he have a name??) hands Gen his tools that were taken from him "when you were arrested. Not being a thief, I couldn't otherwise be sure of equipping you properly." Gen is surprised and then asks "You already knew then?" And then the magus says that the guy Gen was bragging to was an informant of his. What did the magus 'already know then'?

2. Why DOES Pol have a pry bar? And how can a pry bar possibly break a wall of obsidian? I've never been able to visualise the geography and architecture properly. When Gen sees the stairs 8 feet wide, why does he get confused that "it was on that side of the corridor where the wall was only 2 feet thick" (not verbatim quote)?

3. When Gen tells the magus to get him a piece of paper from his notebook, Sophos 'stares in astonishment'. The magus says this is because Sophos is surprised at the magus's compliance to Gen. I thought it was because Gen told the magus to shutup but I've always thought it was more than that but couldn't figure it out.

4. My math and science is pitiful. How does Archimedes' principle apply to that bridge?

5. "After years spent trying to dissuade me from wasting my time acquiring valueless skills, he had come to my study one night to tell me why the queen of Eddis would consider a marriage proposal from sounis and why her council, himself included, urge her to accept. He'd left a stack of double-heavy coins on the table and gone away." So...why does he leave the coins? Why was she considering marriage? I thought no one else knew about the volcano...

6. Gen seems to decide that the temple where the stone was hidden was built waaaayyyyyy long ago and that every generation used it to hide the stone. I must be misreading or something. I thought the King/Queen had to wear it around their neck so why would they ever need to hide it and retrieve it?

I've been wanting to post for a whole month now, but got a little diverted by almost accidentally buying a house.

I took a bunch of notes on a recent re-read of QoA and KoA. Mostly I was looking for evidence about some pet questions and timeline info, but some of it might be interesting.

1. About Cups. I thought it would be cool to record every time cups seemed significantly mentioned so we could talk about what metaphors seem to be going on (like the cup/kingdom thing) and whether they are inter-book or intra-book or what. I have my QoA list, which I will put in a comment. It is probably not perfect, but a start. I think the KoA (still on sticky notes) and CofK (not even started) will be more fun.

2. Some questions from the re-read of QoA, in order of whether I think they've been discussed yet.

a) In Eddis and Attolia's conversation (on p. 307 in my paperback) after their armies join, before they remember Gen is still locked up, Attolia mentions that the Mede emperor chose his nephew as his heir over his son. Why? (Why'd he pass over his son, and why was it mentioned, and why is it going to matter?)

b) Around p. 121 when Eddis has been "caught" visiting her Thief at night and she is discussing how she doesn't worry too much about Therespides as a spy, she mentions more worrisome unknown spies who have revealed to Attolia their plans regarding the cannon. Do you feel like this was just mentioned so we could hear about the troop movements, or are these spies going to pop up again? And who could they be?

c) When Attolia can't sleep one night,(p.207) she thinks for a while, takes out the ruby earrings, flicks them around without touching them, and suddenly can go to sleep. I have always had trouble with this. What about the earrings makes her able to rest? My best guess is based on a later passage that says she was kept up at night wondering when she had stooped so low as to torture boys, and I guess the earrings reminded her that he was dangerous enough to get into her bed chamber and thus not an innocent boy in that sense, so her conscience could rest. But I do not feel sure about this. Anything else to back that up, or any better ideas?

d) When Eddis is talking to Gen after his day at the war hospital and they get into being pawns of the gods,(p.170 for me) they bring up Hiamathes's gift and its "properties" and each ponders them for a bit. I must be being really dense about this, but I have never really understood why. Please, help.

e) When Attolia balks at the whole temple to Hephestia thing, Eugenides says he had taken a vow that if he became king it would be built (345). I cannot find this vow. Can anyone find it? If not, do you think it was something he did formally in front of people before leaving Eddis, or a promise he made privately in a bargain-with-the-gods type way to be on his side?

And five questions is enough for one post. I will save the pot-stirrers for another day.

Reminders: Please refer questions about leading discussions to Jade, and please keep all Conspiracy of Kings comments spoiler-free as a courtesy to us poor souls who haven't read it yet. Thanks!

(All page numbers in this post are from the hardcover Greenwillow edition, with the ugly statue of Hephestia on the front.)

First line: “ ‘We’ll have to wait until nearly midnight,’ said the magus. ‘We might as well get something to eat.’” (115)

Last line: “You’re welcome, my queen.” (219)

As Jade noted last week, the second half of this book is where the plot really takes off—objects are stolen, the Attolian Guard is evaded, prisons are escaped, and secrets are revealed.  We also witness Gen’s confrontation with the gods he didn’t believe in, learn of Ambiades’ treachery, and hear for the first time about the Mede Empire.  Furthermore, we are introduced to the queen of Attolia, the captain of her guard, the queen of Eddis, and Eddis’ minister of war.  And Pol dies.

One great thing about this book is that even with all the exciting plots, we get character development too.  Gen gains respect for his companions and risks his life to help the magus and Sophos escape from Attolia, while the magus comes to respect Gen in turn, believing he deserves to know about the Mede Empire, for instance, rather than treating him as a tool.  And we, the readers, get socked again and again by Gen’s brilliance.  (At least, I do.)

Lines I like:

“ ‘This way,’ I hissed, ‘when they hear us chatting like happy sparrows in our nest, they won’t immediately be able to find us.” (187) [Gen’s turns of phrase delight me.]

“A thief never makes a noise by accident.”  (194) [Another reminder that Gen is usually deliberate about his actions, even when he appears to be out of control.]

“Oh, I believe that Attolia sends best wishes that the Queen’s Thief is well and hopes that she will have a chance to entertain him for a longer period sometime in the future.” (208)  [Be careful what you wish for, Attolia!]

Let’s hear from you! What do you have to say about this week’s chapters?  Do you have favorite lines?  Plot moments that amaze you?  Moments that resonate either with this book’s ending or with the rest of the series?  What are/were your initial impressions of characters we met for the first time in this reading?  Any eulogies for Pol out there?  What about reactions to the reveal(s) of the ending in general—either from this read, or remembered from your first one?

Next week: The Queen of Attolia, chapters 1-7

It has taken me a while to post this. Sorry : ) this is my art project that was only supposed to take 3 weeks tops, but ended up taking about 10 working 1&1/2 hour every other school day. The middle rock looking thing is supposed to be the Hamiathes's gift, and coming out from it are the three sections, The Thief(Right), The Queen of Attolia(Top), and The King of Attolia(bottom). there were some requirements that I didn't exactly plan, had to be incorporated into the piece.Since it was called the Explosive objects project, some thing(s)(the jewels) had to be shooting out a point. And there had to be shading(the red in the Queen section). Oh yeah, in the Thief space, that's (I don't know how to spell the name) the Great Goddess. The harpish thing in the king section is Dike's lyre, and the crown hanging on it's Gen's. Constructive criticism is welcome.: ) Enjoy! (the lighting is funny in both, sorry.)

After seeing the Gift's from the Thief Con, and the latest one made by Squight...my fingers started twitching to make my own.

I decided to ignore the artist interpretation on the new edition paperbacks, and just go to the source.

Descriptions of the stone include:

"Still caught in my palm after a night in the river was the poor, plain, gray-and-white spotted stone--Hamiathe's Gift."

"The magus flipped it over so that he could see the lettering carved there, the four symbols of Hephestia's ancient name.
'But it's just a plain gray rock,' said Sophos."

"It was a rounded oval and just the weight, I thought, to go in a slingshot. But I looked closer at the letters carved in the side of it and saw the sun glint off something blue at the bottom of the carving.
'It's a sapphire,' I said, "at least part of it is.' I peered down the hole bored from top to bottom, then flipped it over and, looking closely, could see where the water had worn the stone smooth and uncovered a few blue flecks of the gem inside."

"The sapphire hidden in the stone caught the light, and the carved letters seemed to hover, bright blue, in the air."

Ok, so based on those, I wanted to have a small, gray, speckled, rounded oval stone that at first glance looks boring until you notice the flecks of sapphire on the outside and the sapphire uncovered by the four symbols of Hephestia's name. It also needs a hole bored from top to bottom to thread a leather thong through. I didn't want a flattish rock like the one on the book cover, since Gen likened the gift to slingshot ammo....which to me implies a rounder stone.

After some experimenting with imbedding a blue glass gem inside a round "stone" made from clay and then carving through the clay to reveal the gem (didn't work...the gem would have needed light shining through to make the blue show up), and then with mixing black sand into clay to get a speckled effect (didn't work...upon baking, the "art sand" turned purple).....I ended up using a light shade of gray clay, rolled in real sand from my driveway (sifted to keep out larger chunks).

Mini experimental Gifts, post baked:

I added some minor accents of blue glitter on the outside (rolled the ball of clay between my palms to make the gravel and glitter imbed in the clay nicely) and then carved four symbols onto one side (I used the ones from the book cover for inspiration). I used a metal skewer to bore a hole straight though the "stone" making sure to keep the rounded oval intact.

After I baked the clay, I used acrylic paint in "ice blue metallic" to very carefully fill in the carved letters

A light coat of spray polyurethane to give it a slight river-polished look, and it was done!

(It's grayer in real life, not as tan as the pics show)

So...that's that.

[identity profile] styromgalleries.livejournal.com
I lent my copy of The Thief to a friend so I have a (possibly stupid) question for y'all.

What exactly does Hamiathes' Gift look like? I know it's small, but does it really have a stone set in the center like the one on the latest cover of TT?

I need to know 'cause I'm writing a little drabble and I describe the stone at one point. I just want to make sure I've got it right.

For humouring me and answering a question that I should know the answer to, perhaps I should offer some sort of consolation prize? I'm in a writing mood lately, so first person to answer can request a drabble, if they so choose. You can pick character, pairing, genre, prompt, song lyric, whatever, and I'll get that written for you soon. :)

Thanks!

Thanks [livejournal.com profile] openedlocket and [livejournal.com profile] jade_sabre_301! That's exactly what I needed to know.

Also, no one's taken me up on that drabble offer yet. I am perfectly serious. ;)

Eta: Okay, one more thing. ^^; How does Eddis go about disposing of the stone? Does she just throw it over a cliff or something?
[identity profile] kitsune-rains.livejournal.com
So I'm re-reading The Thief and every three pages or so I say, Wait a second, what's this all about? I should ask the nice people at Sounis!

And then I forget what the hell I was talking about.

But here's something that puzzles me that I do remember. I hope I'm not being repetitive, but I didn't see this on any older posts. Gen stole Hamiathes's Gift, right? Twice. And then he's saved by it when they are captured by the Attolians... and yet, earlier in the book it was specifically said that Hamiathes's Gift was useless unless it was given to the bearer.

Cut to rambling analysis... )

As an aside, when Attolia first visits Gen in the palace dungeons she turns to leave and her peplos sweeps across the back of Gen's hand. He winces because, "The velvet was soft, but the embroidery scratched."

I love this single line. It's Attolia in a nutshell. The velvet is naturally soft, but it's the embellishments that make it rough. The embroidery which is supposed to improve it, and does indeed make it prettier, makes it much less palatable up close.

Attolia herself is the same. She's a good person made harsh and cruel by her circumstances. She sacrifices her own emotions and well being (Since she's always trying to appear to be Hephestia, I could even go as far as to say she sacrifices her own self) in order to maintain the careful facade she requires to remain queen. And Gen, sees immediately past all that to the velvet underneath.

De-lurking

[identity profile] tearoha.livejournal.com

Hi! *waves* I've been lurking around for a few weeks now and think it's time to say hi! Well ok, to be honest I'm coming out of lurkerdom because I have a nagging question...

A bit about me: I live in New Zealand and am about to sit my final high school exams, which, of course, is a great opportunity for online procrastination. I found this comm maybe a month ago and was absolutely shocked to find out that my favourite duology (The Thief and QoA) was really a trilogy! I pleaded and begged and someone gave me a copy of KoA for my birthday, thus fulfilling all my wildest dreams :) Since then I think I've become obsessed, and started collaring innocent classmates in corridors and asking if they've read these fantastic books. I persuaded my Mum to read them and she had a question that I couldn't answer, so I thought hey, why not ask the clued-up people over on Sounis?

So... question: Going right back to the Thief, Gen takes Hamiathes' Gift for Eddis because handing down the stone peacefully secures the line of succession, right? And when the stone is taken by force, the stone doesn't work any more. This is also why the magus wants it. BUT after Gen steals it, he gives it to the Magus, and then later STEALS IT BACK from the Magus without his permission. Doesn't this count as breaking the peaceful handing-down chain of events? Or is it fulfilled again because when Gen does get to Eddis, (the country) he gives the stone freely to Eddis (the person)?

To be honest, I'm stumped. So I'm really hoping someone here can help me out. *looks around hopefully* I'm not sure about LJ ettiquite either (though I've had an account for over a year!) - is it ok to post here straight off or should I have introduced myself beforehand?
Wow, this is way longer than I meant it to be. So, hoping someone can help! XD

[identity profile] loquaciousquark.livejournal.com
Hey everyone! I don't think anyone remembers me, but I joined almost two years ago and have been pretty much lurking since then. And, uh, now I'm back? :)

So I was recently rereading King and The Thief, and I kept noticing all these little details that I'd missed the first four six several times through. Here's a list of my questions and observations.

from The Thief (page numbers from the copy with the statue of Hephestia and Gen looking over his shoulder):

1. When the magus accuses Gen of stealing the food and asks if he's eaten well, Gen replies, "Not lately." Why is this so supposedly indicative of his guilt? I would have thought, if anything, it would clear him, since he hasn't eaten. (pg 97)

2. After Gen rifles through the bones at the end of the maze and finds the seal ring with the dolphin on it, why does he get so defensive when the magus tries to take it? Is there something special about the ring that I'm missing, or does he just not want the magus to take anything else from him? (page 140)

3. This one's just something I noticed in retrospect and thought was so cool. This passage is when the magus and Sophos join Gen in prison.
"I didn't dare shake my head, but I desperately didn't want the magus to try to wrap me in his cloak. I didn't want his cloak. I didn't want him to put his hand beneath my head and lift it to slide Sophos's fancy folded cloak underneath, which is what he did first. When he didn't notice the bump under my hair at the base of my skull, I gave up protesting. The pain washed back over me, and I sank into it."
I've read this I don't know how many times, and I'd always thought that the bump at the base of his skull was just some wound where he'd been hit and the magus bumping it caused the pain to wash over him. It was only on this last reading that I realized that he's actually talking about Hamiathes's gift! Probably everyone noticed this but me, but I was so excited when I realized I just couldn't help sharing. :) (pg 173)

and from The King of Attolia (hardcover version):

1. Why does Gen get so upset during the Klimun myth? (pp 273-285)

2. And one more quick observation--when Gen's on the balcony and Costis says, "You can trust me with your life, My King." is that the first time anyone but Attolia's called him that? How fitting that it should be Costis. :)

So that's everything I have at the moment. Your thoughts? :D

so I just re(re-re-re-re-re-re-re-)read TT, QoA, & KoA, and I came up with a question that I'm sure you all will have answers for:

In QoA, Attolia is thinking about what exactly she's going to do to Eugenides: ".......She had to consider that Eugenides, though he'd caused her no hamr beyond stealing something she hadn't known she possessed, could become the measurable danger to her that he was to Sounis."

what did he steal? (is this completely obvious and I didn't notice?) her peace of mind? her security? something more concrete then that?
