Hello! Long-time lurker here. :)

I just read a fascinating article on the BBC about a whistled language used by farmers in a Greek mountain village. Of course, I immediately thought of Eddis. Surely the shepherds and farmers in remote villages in Eddis would use something similar...?

At any rate, I thought it was cool enough to share!

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ninedaysaqueen for organizing this!

This is the third discussion for Queen of Attolia. The first section is here, and the second is here.

These discussions are spoiler free for the new short stories, “The Wine Shop” and “The Knife Dance,” as well as the Thick as Thieves arc.

There will be spoilers for books 1-4, so if you haven’t read all the published books yet, proceed with caution.

Next week is a break week with a chat on March 19th.

***

I'm going to structure this a little differently, with a very brief (and irreverent) summary under the cut and discussion topics in comments to this post. If you want to start new comment threads with completely different topics, please do!

Section three runs from Chapter 15, which begins "Attolia turned to look at him, where he kneeled watching her face," and Chapter 21, which ends, "And she believed him."

"My Queen?"
"Only for that."

Next week we will continue with QoA chapters 15-21 lead by [livejournal.com profile] pendrecarc!
[identity profile] pendrecarc.livejournal.com
And we've reached the end! Thank you so much to [livejournal.com profile] ninedaysaqueen for coordinating.

This week's discussion covers chapters 10 through the end, from "When I woke, the sun was up and the day was already warm." to " 'Thank you, thief.' 'You're welcome, my queen.' "

That is, I believe, the first time we hear anyone addressed directly as "My queen." It certainly isn't the last. :)

There's so much to cover here! Gen stealing the Gift a second time; more interference from the gods; Ambiades' and Pol's deaths; an introduction to the queens of Attolia and Eddis; and of course the revelations of Ambiades' treachery and Eugenides' true identity and motives.

I'm going to try something a little different with this post. I'll start a few threads in the comments, each with its own topic, which will hopefully seed the discussion in different directions! Feel free to respond to each of those if the topic interests you, or reply to this post and start your own.

I had so much fun during the character chat, that I thought it was worth it to pay ten bucks in order to save the full transcript. I do think it's a pretty sneaky way for Chatzy to get money. Honestly, it is better than ads though. Can you imagine being forced to watch a commercial for toilet paper before you are allowed to enter the chat room? Bleh.

Anyway, Livejournal won't let me paste the chat directly into this post, saying that it is too large. So I made a google doc and changed the settings so that anyone can see it, google doc users or not. Let me know if you can't access the link. There is a fun surprise ending (some of you are already aware of it though.)

I had the most enlightening reading experience with the Queen of Attolia recently. After multiple times of reading this book, I finally think I grasp the larger significance of the story of Hespira and Horreon that Eddis tells to the Magus. Even then, there are two interpretations.

I might be late to the party but did ya'll read this article someone wrote??

I just feel like we need to talk about

Here's the link: http://www.newstatesman.com/culture/2013/08/i-hate-strong-female-characters

And here are some quotes...

"Sherlock Holmes gets to be brilliant, solitary, abrasive, Bohemian, whimsical, brave, sad, manipulative, neurotic, vain, untidy, fastidious, artistic, courteous, rude, a polymath genius. Female characters get to be Strong."

“Of course, normalwomen are weak and boring and can’t do anything worthwhile. But this one is different. She is strong! See, she roundhouses people in the face.”

Can we just talk about this, please? I'm not going to to lie and say I didn't notice this either. The 'strong' female character is usually super strong, knows kung fu and yet has perfect hair. Like in what world is that fair? Sure she's no longer damsel in distress but, really? How is this anymore realistic?

And then I couldn't help but think of ATTOLIA. She's drop dead (almost literally) gorgeous but I just can't see her drop kicking anyone...instead she's quiet and calculating smart, she makes sacrifices but doesn't flaunt them. And while, yes, somethings she's done are pretty down right crazy and extreme, her overall personality is more real. Quiet is her unmatchable strength and at the same time (through Gen) we see that she is very human and vulnerable.

Eddis on the other-hand definitely has the kung fu down, but I can't imagine Eddis being the "strong & sexy" character. More like "Strong and sensible" Ag

And this is why I love this series so much. Does anyone feel the same?? Or different?

I was thinking about the nationality of the characters. Actually, out of the three countries, I always thought that the Attolians were the most Grecian, especially because of the pale skin and dark hair. The olive complexion that we often associate with the mediterranean region is probably from prolonged exposure to the sun, but the royals, especially the females, would not have been allowed to wander out in the open, much the way Athenian women were kept within the compound of their homes since dark skin indicates being of a lower caste because it means that one has been working. (And heaven forbid that, for a reason.) So actually, nobility and royalty probably had light coloured skin, like Irene. On the other hand, I thought that the Eddisians were native to the extent that they were more polynesian than greek, especially because they were emphasised to be native, and that they had darker skin. It would also explain why people of the other countries look down on them; there is this innate prejudice against polynesians and aboriginals that makes itself evident through how they were hunted down like game by many. As for the invaders of Sounis, I thought them to be either Anglo-Saxon, or Gaellic, because they strike me as slightly different from the other two, not in the least because they have blond hair, like Sophos, while Attolians and Eddisians have dark hair. Maybe that is why the three countries have so much bloody history between them; racial prejudice is rampant, and it might be possible if it appears in a fantasy work. Thoughts?

P.S. I know I am a tad bit more than obsessive. I will try to stop.

Hey everyone! I'm a relatively new fan of Queen's Thief, and about a week ago I reread A Conspiracy of Kings and was yet again awash in feelings. So of course I've drawn some fanart.

I have been reading a lot lately about the representation of female rulers' power and the imagery associated with it. I was looking at some manuscript illuminations of medieval queens when I was suddenly struck with the inspiration to draw Helen in that style. Helen Eddis is my favourite character of the Queen's Thief series, and part of that is because of the way she firmly wields her power, but not without kindness and warmth. So here it is, under the cut, a fake manuscript illustration of Helen, Queen of Eddis, heavily inspired by byzantine & medieval art.

Hi, everybody!

You may remember that my sister posted a vid of a library concert a little while ago, about a war dance that Sophos might possibly do (perhaps in a pub?)

Well, I just found this old vid of a perfomance of the dance my sister posted earlier, and, you know what? I think it has to be Eddisian!

Granted, the fellow who's leading the dancers isn't quite my idea of the MOW, but look at the outfits! Crazy ninja Eddisians, wouldn't you say? So black, and with all that pretty piping (on the clothes, as well as in the music).

I hope the embed works but if not, here's a link, too:
http://youtu.be/nTA6guINUM0

BTW, Here's another cool Georgian dance I found, with daggers! What do you think? Would Eddisians maybe do something similar?

PS Sorry that first vid is a little grainy, but I hope you enjoy it anyway, if you watch! And I wish everybody who is celebrating a happy Labor Day Weekend.

[identity profile] puppeteergirl.livejournal.com

Hey people! I recently was required to write an essay on what I think makes good writing. I was supposed to take a scene from a movie or book or a poem or song and use it as an example of good writing. So I chose a scene from the KoA. It was really fun, and I thought some of you dear people might enjoy reading my thoughts.

I also created a few characters from the series on Azaleas Dress up Dolls website in the Tudors game, which can be played here: http://www.azaleasdolls.com/tudors2.html

So, I have just been considering crazy plot twists that might make themselves shown in the next Queen's Thief book(s)
I've been thinking about Gen's secret desires for power alluded to in The King of Attolia in a conversation between Irene and Relius:

"But I think Eugenides is afraid."
"Of what?"
"Of failing," said Attolia, as though that fear, at least, Relius should have recognized. "Of stealing my power from me."
"You would only be stronger."
"I know," Attolia soothed him. "I did not say I'm afraid. He is, though, I think. Afraid of his own desire for power."

And Teleus says at the end

"That one," -he nodded toward the closed door- "will rule more than just Attolia before he is done. He is an Annux, a king of kings.

Earlier on in KoA Gen mentions that the Queen must have a breaking point to her strength, so as strong as she is she isn't invincible, and now that Eugenides is sovereign over Attolia, Eddis and Sounis, his power is growing (Sophos and Helen were sworn to him, not Irene.) So I am interested to see where Attolis and Attolia will end up.

Mostly though! I am curious what OTHER outrageous and crazy plot twists others have considered.

GUYS!!!!!!! Guess what? I finally received A Conspiracy of Kings in paperback! I was soooo surprised, because my bookstore wasn't supposed to have it until August 23, but since I pre-ordered, I got to have it sooner!

AND THERE'S A STORY!!! It's called "Destruction" and it's about the throwing of Hamiathes's Gift in the volcano. You guys have to read it, because I feel like it's peppered with the typical MWT subtlety and that I completely missed the whole point of it, but it's so beautiful, and I was so excited reading it that I barely even understood the last part.

There were the Queen of Attolia and Eugenides (and they were like... looking at each other the WHOLE time) and Queen of Eddis and there's even King of Sounis!!! He even had a little paragraph all to himself!!!

Oh and there are more extras!

Unfortunately, a map isn't one of them.

But there's a character list!

And three whole pages of book recommendations!!!

Join me in my fangirlish SQUEEEEEEEE of delight!

**Edit: Oh, it's five whole pages of book recs. See, I'm so excited I can't even count.

**Edit 2: Hey! The kind lopezuna gave this link here for a copy of ACok. Go ahead and read it guys!

QT themed icons for everyone!!!!!! Feel free to right click and save them and use them!
This one's actually 100x100 for people who are sticklers about that kinda thing. Helen is a bit too pretty, but in comparison to Attolia her features are less strikingly beautiful. And she does have the family slouch!

Irene's is bigger because she's bigger/ scarier in real life.

If anyone at all is interested, I'll make icons/pictures of the goddesses next? I'm having trouble with the guys unfortunately...
