Welcome to the early morning hours of Thick as Thieves Day. All this time, we’ve been trying to cure a seven-year ache.

First off SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS! Depending on how sensitive you are to spoilers, I would not enter the realm of the comment section till you have finished the whole book. Presumably, spoilers for further on in the book will not appear in the threads for earlier chapters, but I cannot guarantee this. Remember who our authoress is?

I love how Kamet's first thought is--I hope they don't remember that time I started that fire... XD

It would be uncivil to beat me to death but maybe he didn't know that. They are very uncivil. Such little faith, Kamet! LOLOLOLO

I also love that even though he is clearly scared, he's still like--his Mede is terrible. Such a little grammar Nazi.

It was so good to be back in the world of Attolia - but this story, much as it felt a bit like Eagle of the Ninth as others have mentioned (and I'm planning on rereading Eagle today), also felt a lot like The Horse and His Boy - both in civilization (Calormen vs Medean) and the runaway slave narrative. Anyone else feel that?

As I was reading this chapter I was just suddenly struck by a thought regarding an earlier occurrence: I wonder if Laela was telling the truth. Maybe her pallor was actually caused by the cosmetics he could smell?

With most books I wouldn't have to be so deeply suspicious of people. MWT, you are ruining my character!

So, why were Costis's words "knife-edged" when they were walking to the caravan? Kamet seems to assume it's because he was being "indiscreet" but I thought maybe Costis was getting wind of his plans to escape or annoyed at being underestimated.

He waited till Kamet fell asleep to sleep himself but then leaves Kamet by himself in the morning which is a little odd, since I can now tell he's keeping a close eye on his charge.

OK so what do you guys think: did Costis severely underestimate his sword skills in KoA when he said he wasn't a very good swordsman and had only a "soldier's command of the sword" or did he just improve very rapidly under Gen's tutelage? Cuz he sure took down two of the emperor's handpicked guards very quickly!

Loved the book and am already planning to re-read it.

At the Stepwell of Ne Malia, Kamet writes: "To me, the priest said, “Your journey will take you farther than you imagine”—a safe prophecy even if my journey had only been across the city. The Attolian looked a little mystified, and I asked what he’d heard. He repeated the words as he’d understood them: “Remember Immakuk. Pay the fastener.”

What does "Pay the fastener" mean?

Awwww young Gen in the kitchens and hiding in the gardens! K not young seeing as it was QoA, but still. And maybe from the way Kamet talks about him, Philo is the same age as Gen was in QoA? He deserved the sand in his food! Who do you think put the sand there? The cook?

I didn't see the twist that "Sandi" was a friend of Gen's, not someone that disliked him or was unhappy with his Kingship.

Also way back in QoA, when Gen was trying to get over his depression and cleaning up his ink quills, I recall in the re-read that he mentions that he owes a scroll to a friend. Is Kamet the friend he was talking about back then? And does that mean MWT know about Kamet and the kitchen scene way back 15 years ago?

I can't believe there hasn't been discussion about this chapter yet. This was the most chilling chapter (apart from 12/13) to me. Can anyone else say what they thought about Kamet's backstory with Marin? Like, I cannot... I can't even... I have lost the ability to even with Nahuseresh. Like.... I just can't *cries in a corner*. (I'm waiting until someone else admits to having the same feeling as I do about this scene, so I can let them explain it, lol. I still can't put into words what I found so disturbing.)

In lighter tones, I'm also so stoked that it's finally revealed that Costis Ormentiedes is 150% bishounen. I am outraged that his heartthrob status wasn't as delineated in KoA as it should have been, Mr. Pretty-face-who-can-sing.

I can't remember which chapter this was, so I'll post my question here. Why was Kamet so afraid of Costis finding out that Nahusaresh was still alive? There was a lot of emotional weight attached to why Costis couldn't find out, but I couldn't quite understand Kamet's fear. I'm thinking of the scene when the ship pulls in sight of Attolia and Kamet blurts out the truth (something like that).

Let's not forget first impressions. Now that we've read it, what do we think of the cover? Some parts are obvious (the burning ship, the two men), but who do you think the woman is? Which building/city is it that they're walking toward on the cover?

The building is the first caravan halt place they go to (I forget the word and my brother has the book right now), where they get the jobs as caravan guards.
I'm still unsure about the woman. Irene? Laela? Originally I thought it would be Moira, but obviously not...

I would like to make an appreciative post for MWT's technical abilities here, to add to all the speculation and awesomeness already going on. I've been increasingly frustrated with YA fantasy in recent years, and lately I've been thinking a lot about what is making so many popular books these days fall flat for me, and why MWT, in contrast, never fails to deliver.

So, things MWT does NOT do, but that characterize the style of many bestselling YA fantasy authors.

-write in obnoxiously purple prose (this is a more personal one, but lord, do I despise long, flowery prose).

-write anything strictly for sensationalism or to get a shocked reaction from the reader (mwt might be tricksy, but she doesn't write *just* to shock us.)

-resort to cheap emotional manipulation (I think inkasraid hit the nail on the head here with her comment on on the baby disappearance theory going around. To make us feel that much gut-wrenching pain for Gen and Irene only to bring the baby magically back feels like something George R.R. Martin is more likely to do, not MWT)

-change any inherent personality traits of her characters just to get the plot to do something she needs it to do

-vomit words at random on the computer to reach a desired page count, since apparently all YA fantasy NEEDS to be 100,000+ words these days. (instead, MWT is very deliberate. She thinks carefully about every word, every sentence, and how it all fits together...there is nothing wasted.)

These are a few of many reasons that (for me) make MWT a cut above the average YA fantasy author. Maybe I'm just really snobby (actually, I'm pretty sure that's it). But I couldn't help think about all this as I read TaT. It was so good. MWT is so good! THIS FANDOM is so good!!!!!!!

Why is Ornon the Attolian ambassador to the Mede?

Maybe I'm missing something, but isn't Ornon the *Eddisian* ambassador to Attoila? Why would Attolia send him to the Medes as an *Attolian* ambassador? Are they allowed to send emissaries from another country to represent them?

Hi everyone, maybe I am a bit late on this discussion, but I thought that the miscarriage and Irene's illness because of it was perhaps the only way the Gods could persuade Gen to actually take over the reins of Attolia however cruel it sounds... this is how he is actually forced to step out and show publicly what a king he is...

Medes and the King of Kings

I'm a visitor just discovered the website and left a comment somewhere here and now have no idea where...

So this is the big revelation for me. I reread all the books before reading this one and saw as an overview, once Gen could no longer be the Thief in practicality due his loss of his hand. He finally gave into the will of the gods... and stole a Queen and Kingdom/s, what next to steal?

Why are they so important to the gods? to protect their own, Eddis and Attolia, their worshipers. As much as Gen loves Sophos, Sounis was a threat to Attolia's kingdom so it was made harmless by submission (While giving Sophos and Helen their heart's desire of marriage) There now was solidarity between the three countries.

However the Magus said the Medes would always be a threat. So in TaT the immediate threat has been stopped with the destruction of the Empire's Navy, that doesn't mean it is over.....

As I read the last chapter I realized the last book will not be the battle with the Medes like I thought. Instead it will be the fall of the Medes with Gen doing his sneaky thing and using all the information Kamet gave to him to cause unrest and the break up of the Empire just like Costis quoted him as saying in TaT: that the Barons and other countries that have been swallowed up will rebel at the perceived weakening of the Emperor's control if He does not invade the Lesser Peninsula.

I was much more excited about reading about that and then the revelation hit! I am thinking too small for Gen and for the gods. Gen will stop/destroy anyone or anything that poses a threat to His Kingdom, His Queen and His Heirs. The only way peace would really happen is if HE became the King of the Medes. (Like with Sounis). Then they would not be the just the little Kingdoms of the Lesser Peninsula, dependent in some ways on the Powers of the Greater Peninsula, (which could swing both ways, to help or to harm).

They would become major power players and He would truly become the King of Kings. I can't wait to see how MWT pulls this one off....
