“I hope you know that I could once jump from the palace to those roofs over there.” He eyed the empty space below him and said sadly, “If I tried now, I’d probably eviscerate myself when I landed. But it does give me an idea for what to do with you.” - The King of Attolia p335 (2017 paperback edition)
What does that mean!? Are you throwing Costis off a roof? Shooting him out of a cannon? After I read TaT, it became pretty clear to me that some important information was left out, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.
Firstly, he's talking about this.
"He stepped into the edge of the parapet and threw himself off it, into the black night air beyond. (…) Finally, one guardsman pointed to the rooftops on the far side of the boulevard that surrounded the palace." - The Queen of Attolia, p7 (2017 Paperback Edition)
That was the night he tried to escape the Guard dressed as a servant, but instead ran into a board. Which means he's thinking about the time he spent in Attolia's palace prior to QoA.
So, so, so... that paragraph should've read something like this.
“I hope you know that I could once jump from the palace to those roofs over there, (and the last time I did that was the last time I was disguised as an Attolian indentured servant. While I was disguised as a servant and investigating the Mede treaty, I befriended Nahuseresh’s slave secretary, Kamet. He was kind to me and gave me a coin that I kept as a promise to myself to one day rescue him. Turns out, he may have some information we could use against the Mede.) But it does give me an idea for what to do with you.”
All this opens up a whole new window of possibility that Eugenides planned the entire plot of TaT while he was drunk on a wall. You’ve heard of drunk texting. I give you drunk espionage?
