Recently in the Conspiracy Room we've been discussing Attolian etc. clothing, in particular what the men wear (and yes, underwear did get mentioned!). Checkers suggested discussing it here as well.

So, how do you visualise the clothes, or don't you? It seems pretty much up to our imaginations - the books are mainly vague (on purpose, I think?). For the men I've seen various mentions of pants/trousers, a kilt, shirts, undershirts, overshirts, tunics, coats, robes, and a cape - but not all together ;-) And we know Eddis sometimes wears trousers instead of a dress or robe.

And how distinct do you think different regional fashions are? KoA has the King wearing a Medean style and Relius Continental, and talks of an Eddisian tunic.

Bear,

I like to think of the king as a sort of Chrestomance like character, you know, the heavily embroidered bathrobe, only not full length, open at the front, a contrasting color underneath, loose trousers, with a tighter cuff. I'm sure you can manage. Can you start with a largish pattern, dragons? Lions? Poinsettias? Do you think he has one of those neckerchief things around his neck? I just can't decide.

Chrestomanci?! But he's such a goody-two shoes!

*sigh*

I don't know so much about a neckerchief; that would probably be overkill with the big jacket collar I'm picturing (like a smoking jacket, right?)...but what about an elaborate sash? He could tuck things into it. And he needs big flashy buttons, or some form of appropriate bling. Maybe a seal ring of his own...bigger, of course, because he can.

do you know the hornblower series on A&E? the british navy neckcloth, wrapped around their necks under the high collar on their shirts. that's what i mean. i trust you not to make him look like a goody two shoes.
have you decided the name of your magnet school yet?

Ah, I see! This is far from what I had been picturing, almost more like
Balthier's (http://www.jvrpg.com/image_dossier/dossier/ff12/balthier3.jpg) gaudy frills...but I guess he can't really dress like an urchin anymore. Should his hair still be short, or grown back out again?

Gosh, I ought to come up with something ostentatious in case someone asks.

yes, but a bit intimidating for The Refrigerator Art Magnet School I should think. Those kids are generally pretty little.

Ooh, I'm glad you do. He's from Final Fantasy XII...he's a sky pirate who is basically the definition of cool. He's always throwing around the ten-dollar words and being fancy and flying his stolen airship with his bunny-woman sidekick Fran who keeps him in line.

And that's the outfit I decided to make. Because I don't have enough to think about in my life.

my guess is even his underwear would be embroidered with gold. At least the Wear Around The Palace Underwear, not the Lurking In Sounis Underwear.

How about elephants for the pattern? They're large.

I haven't actually considered the clothes that much except Attolia and Gen though when I do it's mostly for crackfic and dolls purposes. And also for plots.

I haven't thought much about the clothing, but this did remind me of a line in QoA that always cracks me up (for whatever reason...) when Eugenides says he'll look conspicuous next time he's in Attolia, dressed in Eddisian formalwear with gold frogs on the front. Now that sounds like a fun outfit.

That one doesn't get me since I own some clothing with frog (http://www.houseofanoria.com/JHB-buttons_clasps/FROGS_hooklet.jpg) closures, but I've wondered what the golden bees of Atollia looked like. (This (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:The_Bees_of_Malia_Crete_1800-1700BC.jpg) maybe?)

I always pictured the Medes as corresponding to Persia. I wasn't sure why I saw them this way, but I just looked it up and it turns out I was right: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medes. So when Eugenides is said to favor the Medean style in KoA, I see him in some type of classic Persian clothing.

I think I was influenced by the line drawings illustrating The Horse and His Boy for the Medes (I think it's Pauline Baynes' illustrations? I'm separated from my books). I suspect those drawings borrowed a bit from Ottoman fashions. The Nahuseresh in my head is usually wearing something between a kaftan and a frock coat over very full sleeves and trousers that are very full higher up but narrow to show off the calves and ankles. (And pointed slippers.)

Oh, YES.
I thought I was the only one who had that reaction...I think it's a dyed beard in two points. It sounds so Calormene. He does look a bit like Rabadash in my head too.

Well, I personally would be all for seeing Naharuseth caught on a hook half-way up a wall. A most undignified end.
