I like that she tells people not to even read the backs of the books. That's what I do. I'm so glad that absolutely nothing was spoiled for me when I first read the series.
Wish it could be the first time again for me, too. :D
This review makes me want my own copy even more so I can re-read The Thief. Why don't the bookstores have it? :( I could always pester my friend to let me borrow it again but after the last incident (when I kept the book with me for weeks after I finished reading it) I don't think she'll lend them to me.
I've been having that same frustration, since for some unfathomable reason I don't own the series yet. (Frustration with the bookstores, not your friend.) But, I did find several copies of Thief at Half-price books (after I bought it new, of course), so that one, at least you can probably find used. The other two are harder, but usually a bookstore will order it in for you, if you specially request it. Or you can buy it online. (According to the Borders Website, there are two copies of QoA left in Borders stores in the entire metro area - and I live in a BIG city. Happily, one of them is in a store close to where my writing group meets, so I'm going to snap it up. The Web site better not be lyin' to me ...)
And I realize this post is by this point completely off track for this thread, but is anyone else having a crisis over whether or not to buy CoK as soon as it comes out? I mean, obviously I want to, but it will be in hardcover when the rest of mine are paperbacks, and you can't GET the earlier books in hardcover with the cool new cover art (at least that I've discovered). So it's either WAIT for the paperback or have a MISMATCHED set. Which, oh which, is the lesser of two evils?
If I were you I would buy it the very minute it releases, you can always buy a paperback later on. I mean sure the book can wait but can you? I mean could you actually wait for the paperback when you know that CoK is just at a reach? Ok so I'm talking about all of us in general (pun) really, but yeah. I wouldn't pass up a chance to buy it asap.
Oops, I mean that's the GREATER of the two evils. I'd rather have 17 copies of each, all mismatched, than have to wait another SECOND to read it. But maybe that's just me. ;-D
Barnes and Noble almost always carries a copy of The Thief. I signed one yesterday in Boulder, CO, as a matter of fact. And another at another store in downtown Boulder-- the name of which I cannot now remember.

Omygosh its MWT *calms her fangirling squee* I must apologize, this is the first time I actually saw you comment in Sounis while I was already a member.
*is still in shock*
I will most definitely buy any copy of the books I can get my hands on. Gosh my fan outburst is quite embarrasing, sorry again. But may I make one last fangirl outburst and tell you how much I love the books? Oh nevermind I guess I already said it.
Oh I look like an idiot. Next time I will try to be a little more proper...I just need to get out of shock that's all. *apologizes profusely to Sounisians for being out of topic*
If you have 17 copies total of Megan's books for her to sign, be prepared to explain yourself :-)! I'm speaking/typing from personal experience. She patiently signed them all while I explained my reasons. I do hold her partially responsible for my Ken Oppel, Tim Wynne-Jones, Phillip Pullman and Chris Crutcher hardcover-buying binge:-)!
HA! I asked Dick Francis to sign a book to my dogs, because they had contributed so much to his success. They seemed to really like to chew on his books, which I always got in hardback, the minute they came out. So of course I had to replace them, with hardbacks, naturally. Poor man...he misunderstood, and thought Hawke and Tucker were my daughters!
"But Ms. Turner, it's perfectly simple to explain why I have 17 copies of all your books. I love them."
I always see at least one copy of The Thief in either B&N or Borders. Why do I always look to make sure there's one there? ... I don't know. I'm compelled to do that with my favorite books.
QoA is the one I've never seen in a store. I had to order mine online. KoA I've seen, but not Queen. I wonder why.
Whereas I'm a get the hardback and then the paperback kind of girl so that I can read right away and then beautify my bookshelves with matching sets, there's always the option of getting on your library's waiting list. They do start them before the books arrive and then when it does you'll be first on the list and have the book right away. Also, it's a good way to alert your library re the books you'd like them to be buying.
ooohh how i would love to do the library option to new books i'm interested in reading. Only a few gets my itchy fingers to go out and buy them instead waiting for the library status term 'on order' which really means half a year wait before it actually comes in and gets distributed. grr
For those who may be coming in late, here's the link (http://bookshelvesofdoom.blogs.com/bookshelves_of_doom/2009/06/the-thief-the-queens-thief-1-megan-whalen-turner.html) to the specific post. Leila's added several more posts since then.
Don't forget, Our Author *does* have another book out, a collection of short stories called _Instead Of Three Wishes_. It's a lovely tide-over until CoK comes out.
