*Spoilers for Tangled*

I just went and saw Disney's Tangled with a friend and the thief character in the movie kept reminding me of someone else. Here are a few similarities I noticed:

1: His name is Eugene. Which means "well-born" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugene_%28given_name%29
2: He dislikes horses.
3. He's obsessed with his appearance.
4. He's cocky.
5. He gets a cut on his hand. Ok he doesn't lose his hand, but it still made me smile.

Anyone else see the movie and agree? See any more similarities?

*UPDATED*
6. Catlike climbing skills
7. The scene in the boat.
8. Two wounds in similar places (#5 is one of them)
9. Jumping rooftops
10. He fights left-handed!

YAY! 10 things!

By the way, here's a video about Flynn:

I did and I can't deny I kept comparing Eugene to Gen. XD I also couldn't help but think if Gen met him he would go "You did this wrong and this wrong, etc."

Also, you could also state how much both men were willing to give up to save/be with the woman they love. Eugene was willing to die and Gen was willing to become king, even if that was the last thing he wanted.

Now, if only Cotis could get a horse like Maximus. XD

Forget guard dogs, the Medes would fall and assassins would fail if Maximus was on Gen's side. XD

I've had a feeling I'd be comparing the two of them ever since I saw the first trailer for Tangled and they were talking about the greatest thief ever. And then he gave ~the smolder, and I just thought "I clean up nicely, don't I?"

In short: I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THIS MOVIE. OMG! I DIDN'T KNOW THAT HIS NAME IS EUGENE.

I haven't seen it either yet, and I was startled that his name is really Eugene. The coincidence is amazing. I know I'm not going to be able to keep from thinking "GEN!" every time I see him once I see this movie.

Also, there's the whole cat-like ability to climb buildings. I really think someone at Disney is a Thief fan.

I haven't seen it yet, but I suspect I'll be constantly comparing him to Alladin . . . and Robin Hood. (Aside from Mowgli, does Disney do non-thief male protagonists? Or is it just princesses and thieves?)

At least this will give me a non-Disney, non-grumble comparison. (I've been peeving since I found out they replaced Kristin Chenoweth with Mandy Moore and haven't been in the mood to give the movie a fair chance.) :)

I actually had to clap my hand over my mouth to keep from making any noise when he confessed his name. The similarities are obvious to anyone who knows of Gen. Someone there has to be a fan, this could not have been an accident.

Someone should send a letter to Disney asking about this...

:-O

How did this not occur to me?? I even thought while I was watching it, oh, I wonder if he's anything like Gen. And then I forgot about it.

Kudos, Puppeteergirl!

There's also a part when Flynn/Eugene is chased on the castle roof, and his pursuers think they're going to corner him. Only he keeps going... jumping right off the edge of the roof. Isn't this the exact thing Gen does at the beginning of QoA, when Attolia's guards are chasing him? Am I right or am I right?

Yes, it is!

I haven't seen it yet, but from what you guys are saying, now I think I agree. TOO many coincidences.

I'm thinking of a different part, when it's just him running. I think the horse is also trying to corner him...?

OK, now I really kinda haveta see this movie. Maybe I'll just cough up the $10 and go (once my finals are over.). I'm not sure I can wait for it to come out on video.

I think I commented somewhere that: remember when mwt was in California and she toured some movie studio in LA? Maybe it was the making of this movie and they (of course) adored her and paid proper tribute to her with these tidbits!

Oh, you mean they STOLE? (I can steal anything, including a character)

Oh, don't you know all the best artists in the world are actually plagiarists? Think Shakespeare.

Date: 12/1/10 03:21 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] creative-lefty2.livejournal.com
True, but there's complementary borrowing and then there's outright stealing. I really hope this isn't outright stealing, but there' just so many coincidences.

Date: 12/1/10 05:13 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ninedaysaqueen.livejournal.com
Of course. I do not mean to imply that outright plagiarism is all fine and dandy, but I don't really see basing your character on another and giving them a similar name as outright stealing. From what I've see of the preview, this thief seems to have his own personality even if he is similar to Gen.

For instance, I honestly believe that Gen is based on Howl.

I haven't seen the movie, yet but I will be going to it next week. We'll see how my official opinion forms from there.

Date: 12/1/10 06:59 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] drashizu.livejournal.com
MWT did say Gen was loosely based on Howl at one point or another. There's also the fact that she includes direct quotes as homage to Howl's Moving Castle like a veiled in-text citation.

*has been writing too many papers in MLA format*

On a related note, (and maybe I've already said this!), Rapunzel's active, lasso-like hair in Tangled is swiped from Rapunzel's Revenge, the graphic novel by Shannon Hale and Nathan Hale.

SO COOL. I think I need to see this movie.

On a related note, I think my biology teacher is Gen in Ten Years. He kind of looks like my idea of him, and last week he said, because someone brought up horses, "I don't like horses. They're big." Bwa ha...

Can I add some more comparisons?

6. The scene in the boat.
7. A certain very spoilery scene during the climax of the movie that in KoA involves stitches. (What? I don't want to completely give away the movie!)

I can't help think of Rapunzel, actually. Y'know why? Because like Gen...

SHE IS IN UR RAFTERS, MESSIN WITH UR DUDES.

He fights left handed. (Being a lefty myself, I notice these things!)

So late because I finally just saw it, but two more (Twelve is as good a number as ten!)
*Narration (beginning and end, anyway) by the witty thief
*the flooding of the Aracthus

(Also, I thought the stab was more like him shoulda-been-deading The Thief than the assassination attempt in KoA.)

That movie just took all my girlhood fantasies about hair and brought them to life! So awesome.

I just saw this movie last night, and I was definitely looking out for these things. I swear I was squeeing inside for more than half the movie. I really loved it, and not just for the character parallels. Loved how they stuck to the tale really well, and didn't take out the harsher bits. And they even showed blood, which is rare for a disney movie.
From: [identity profile] bookaddict88.livejournal.com
I just saw this, and totally loved how many parallels there were. A couple more...

*Eugene eventually becomes a king. (Not in the movie, but he marries a princess...)
*Eugene not telling you everything as he's narrating. (He starts out by saying that he dies.) (Sidenote: This scene where he dies reminds me quite a bit of Beauty and the Beast.)
*Eugene can steal anything without you noticing. (The scene at the beginning where he steals the crown back from the two thugs when he's climbing reminds me both of Eugenides stealing Hamiathes' gift back from the Magus and of when he steals Attolia's knives on the stairs.)
*Eugene takes Rapunzel unexpectedly on a boat and confesses his love.
*Eugene finds himself in a flooding cave, just like Gen does when he goes to get Hamiathes' gift.

...and there were more, but I can't think of them now!
