Just wanted to greet the community before I started posting. I am a long time Thief fan *cough obessive cult leader cough and was so glad to find this site when trying to figure out what granched really meant (thus establish me as a truly nuts fangirl)
I wanted to give my great thanks to the people who posted the stories online. I own the hard cover of KoA rather than the soft-cover so ...no fun happiness. I'd looked obessively for the stories but hadn't been able to find them so....Be blessed in your endeavors!
Lastly, I emailed Megan about exactly how old Gen was exactly and she wouldn't tell me ;) However.... I think I've figured it out doing some very careful caculating, but I want to see if anyone knows officially.

My ideas changed over the years because when I was ten, 15 seemed really really old. Now it doesn't. ^_^
Also, welcome! Did you find the explanation of the word granched?

Granched definition
Date: 5/9/09 04:40 pm (UTC)Here's the entry for "ganch" from the online OED:
ganch, v. Obs. [from French *gancher (in past participle. ganché ‘Let fall (as in a strappado) on sharp stakes pointed with yron, and thereon languishing vntill he dye,’ Cotgr.), from Italian *ganciare, from "gancio" hook = Spanish gancho.]
1. trans. To impale (a person) upon sharp hooks or stakes as a mode of execution.
2. Of a boar: To tear or gash with the tusk (in pa. pple. ganched).
Hence ganching vbl. n. and ppl. a.
ganch, n. obs.
1. The apparatus employed in the execution of criminals by ganching; the punishment itself.
2. A gash or wound made by a boar's tusk. (Cf. GANCH v. 2.) arch.
Check out this quote from 1718: "The Gaunch is a sort of Estrapade, usually set up at the City-gates. The Executioner lifts up the Criminal by means of a pully, and then letting go the rope, down falls the wretch among a parcel of great iron flesh-hooks"
Estrapade, n. Hist.
A torture consisting in attaching a person's hands and feet to a rope, drawing him up by them to a great height, and then letting him fall suddenly; = STRAPPADO. [a. Fr. estrapade (cf. Sp. estrapada), ad. It. strappata, f. strappare to pull tight; app. of Teut. origin; cf. Ger. (Swiss) strapfen to draw, Ger. straff drawn tight.]
Strappado, n. Obs. exc. Hist.
1. A form of punishment or of torture to extort confession in which the victim's hands were tied across his back and secured to a pulley; he was then hoisted from the ground and let down half way with a jerk; also an application of this punishment or torture; also the instrument used.

Date: 5/9/09 09:50 pm (UTC)Since, Irene was described as a girl the night she danced under the orange trees, and Eugendies to be wandering around the Attolian palace all by himself must have been at least 7 or 8.
A girl could fall anywhere between 12-16. She couldn't have been much older than that because she said she got married when she was still younger then Gen. She spent a year in her fiancee's family home then she became queen.
So Irene is probably about 8 to 10 years older then him making her about 30 in "The King of Attolia" which would track with the other information. Irene would have been queen from around the age of 18 so her reign is nearly 12 years long or more. Longer then the 7 year reign of Helen as was stated in "The Queen of Attolia", and I know Gen would of have to have been about 19 or 20 in "The King of Attolia" from the information in my comment below.

Date: 5/9/09 08:06 pm (UTC)I went ahead and found all that complicated math that tells us more about his age. This research was done by a user named silvermuse89, and clearly it took much patience.
"Eugenides would be ten when Eddis becomes queen. This is supported by MWT stating that Gen is ten in Thief! (at the beginning), and the line in QoA: "Her [Eddis'] two brothers had died of fever within the space of a few days and she had become the heir to Eddis. Within a few months, she had become queen..." (pg 39). Since the events in Thief! take place after Eddis' brothers have died, it makes sense to assume that Eugenides is ten at the time of her ascension to the throne.
His age when Eddis first becomes queen is also supported by the paragraph on page 38, where Eddis describes how she had to move him from the dormitories after his mother's death. Since Gen was ten when his mother died, it would make Eddis very young to be queen, considering that she is not much older than he is.
So how can one get Eugenides' age from that? On page 140 of QoA, the magus mention that: "Her [Eddis'] legal reforms have changed Eddis more in seven years than anyone would have thought possible when she took the throne." Thus, we know that Eddis has been ruling for at least seven years, possibly a little more than that since it would take time to implement her legal reforms. Therefore, Eugenides would be at least seventeen (probably closer to eighteen or nineteen) towards the end of QoA. This would make him around sixteen in the beginning of QoA and fifteen in The Thief."
This post was made quite some time ago. So now with the extra information provided in the Eddis short-story, we know that Helen is three to four years older than Eugendies. So she would have become queen when she was 14, and would be 21 by the times in "The Queen of Attolia" making Eugendies 18 in by the middles of "The Queen of Attolia". "The Queen of Attolia" covers two years so if it was about year or two between Thief and "The Queen of Attolia" we can safely infer that he was 15 or 16 in "The Thief". In "The King of Attolia" probably 19 or 20.
Sheesh, Mrs. Turner really makes us work for this stuff.
There is a whole search tag devoted to ages. So, you can look there for more information.

Date: 5/10/09 12:05 am (UTC)*btw, Lady Jane, I think in your first post you mentioned Gen being 10 in TT. You meant 10 when his mom died, right?*

Date: 5/10/09 12:33 am (UTC)Gen was 10 in the Thief! short-story published in Disney Adventures magazine. Note the exclamation mark. That part of the post was referring to that short-story not "The Thief" the novel. As I stated, he was 15 or 16 in the book.
I agree with your thinking on Irene. If she is 8 to 10 years older then Gen that would make her 4 to 7 years older then Helen. Irene did mention that she wasn't that much older then Helen but having reigned longer had much more experience. 3 to 6 years is probably right in there.

Date: 5/10/09 01:45 am (UTC)An explanation of granched. (http://community.livejournal.com/sounis/129928.html)
Gen's Age in the books
Date: 7/14/09 07:16 pm (UTC)Thief - 16 or 17
Queen of Att. - 2 years go by within the book, so ages 17-19
King of Att. - 19 or 20
They refer to him as half-grown, but he is short and slender, which I imagine makes him look younger than his age. Eddis is 5 years older than him (snippet from the end of one of reprinted paperbacks says this), and Attolia would be 6 or 7 years older than him. Sophos I imagine is two years younger than Gen. I can't imagine Gen younger than 16 in Thief, not if Sophos thinks he's ready to be married. And for Gen to physically take on the Guards (in Thief), and Pol and the Magus at one point, I would imagine he would have to be somewhat close to a man's age.
Attolia's age (Irene)
Date: 7/14/09 07:26 pm (UTC)Attolia also thinks at one point that Eddis is only a few years older than Gen and she (herself) is only a few years older than Eddis.
