So, I addition to this being an official de-lurk, I have a couple of questions for the combined mental prowess of Sounis.

1) While I was home as Thanksgiving, my dad asked me what the sort of books the Queen's Theif books are. How would you describe them to someone who has never heard of the series before?

2) In a different post, Keestone had asked what kind of disease would be named Tethys' Lesions (after the wife and sister of Oceanus). Since I had also been pondering this for awhile, I wanted to put it somewhere where people had a better chance of answering it. What we know about Tethys' Lesions is that it is slow killing and genetic. Any ideas?

1) That's hard. I'll come back to it
2) I thought it might be a muscle-wasting disease

I always thought Tethys Lesions was just the in-universe name for syphilis...

Huh. I just googled the symptoms of syphilis, and eewwww!!! Also, yeah that does make sense. Although, would they have a different name for it before the lesions show up, or would they not be able to diagnose until around the second stage?

Also, why Tethys?

1. A cross between fantasy and history, with politics and people.

2.And I thought it was a real disease until just now when I tried googling it! I don't know, maybe it makes a person look like a fish (attacks ears? Causes bloating around the face) or like a fisherman (red irritated skin?).

My de-lurking input is:

1. I suppose I've called it young adult fantasy, but always with the disclaimer that it's not set in the usual fantasy Gothic type universe. It doesn't quite feel adequate, though does it?

2. Perhaps it's kind of like leprosy?

1. I've called it historical fantasy when recommending it...

2. I too thought of it as a muscle-wasting disease. Although it could also be a cancer...

I'd probably call it Historical Fantasy or pseudo-Historical Fantasy, but I think generally the sub-genre of Historical Fantasy includes books set in real-world history with fantastic elements, books set in mythic "historical" settings (Arthur, etc.), and created worlds that can have close cognates with real world history. (So, Marion Zimmer Bradley's The Mists of Avalon, George R.R. Martin's Song of Fire and Ice series, and Guy Gavriel Kay's Lions of Al-Rassan as well as Brust and Bull's Freedom and Necessity.

I also tend to call it Theological Fantasy sometimes, because I love well-built universes that take religions into account seriously and books that explore serious philosophical, ethical, and theological questions in a non "real-world" perspective.

For the book describing, on a more personal level:

A book about people who go through many hard things, and recover through each other. (Bleh, couldn't think of how to put it into words)

Tethys' Lesions (after the wife and sister of Oceanus).

Wait, have I missed something? How do you know that? *feels ignorant*

It's a bit of an assumption following on from other connections to ancient Greek mythology.

I see! I may once have known that Oceanus was a Greek God, but since these days can barely remember what I ate for breakfast, I didn't recall that. And he's one of the gods Gen runs into in the temple in Thief. Interesting.

There are a lot of conditions that fall into those categories. I don't think syphilis would work, as it is not genetic. I would guess that it is a wasting disease. Also, they have some conception of palsy, so it's not a palsy.

It may not be genetic, but since 19th century medical science thought that Syphilis could be transmitted from an infected father to the unborn child, I think it still works with what one we can guess about medical knowledge in a setting where guns and cannon are relatively new technology.

True. The only genetics related disease for that area I can think of is Familial Mediterranean Fever, but from what I looked up, it doesn't seem to present with lesions and it's only been characterized relatively recently. Oh well.

I thought of syphilis as well, even though it is not genetic. Perhaps it is something like syphilis, that is genetic. Some made-up disease with similarities to a real one, kinda like the countries and time-period.

As far as trying to describe the books, I usually say something about how they are well-written, have great characters, politics that feel realistic, and a Greek-like setting. I also tailor it to fit what ever person I'm talking to. I have to admit that for some people the word "Awesome" is adequate.

On the subject of the Tethys Lesions, I don't know much about disease. But another definition of Tethys that might shed some light on what this disease actually is is that the Tethys Sea was in the middle of Pangaea (between the parts that are now the Americas, Europe, Africa, Australia, India, and Antarctica and the part that is now China). Looking at that definition, it seems to indicate that Tethys Lesions would have something to do with something on inside. Obviously it would eventually have to become visible on the outside for the lesions part to make sense. What are real diseases that include lesions?

I also found out that Tethys is the name of an ancient sea, which survives today as the Mediterranean. The setting of the Thief books is similar to Greece, so could the disease name derive from the name of a nearby sea?

I have to say, I don't think that Tethys Sea was mentioned anywhere in the books.

2. Everyone who knew about the Mede king's Tethys' lesions was killed, so I assumed it must be a rarer one that is feared by the people. I had no idea it doesn't really exist, though.

Not neccessarily rare. Any disease that would slowly disable the Mede Emperor, leaving him unfit to rule, could be taken as proof that he was not suitable or fit to rule any longer. Ambitious courtiers might see an opportunity to shortcut the process if they knew he was on the way out. Definitely grounds for fear on his part!

I assumed it would be something like leprosy, simply because of the parallels to the King of Crete in the Theseus myth.

Of course, you can't draw a literal parallel between the Medes and the Cretians (sp?), because Eddis's volcano has similarities to the end of Crete too. I guess the influences are scattered here and there...
