King of Attolia is notably different from the other books.  A different artist drew the pictures; the paper is different, although still much nicer than the US version; the pages are glued, not stitched; there is no vellum.   There are still the wonderful chapter icons, however.

KoA, volume 1

(there seems to be a re-occurring theme of grapes in KoA; wonder why?)

Note the fibula pins, the signet ring, and the disc (top, center) is, I think, the coin he was playing with.

I think I prefer the cover artwork on these two moreso than the others. It is all very beautiful, however.

Do we know what the flowers are? I only ask because flowers are still pretty important in Japanese culture, and I am sure the artist chose them for a reason. On Vol 2 here, they look like white orchids--generally a sign of rare/delicate beauty--to me, and are those grapes on Vol 1 (or something similar to a muscadine?). Vol 1 of QoA looks like it has a species of purple orchid on the back, and the flowers on Vol 2 look like some sort of lilly. And Thief has got some sort of berry on the back as well. I guess I'm focusing on these because they interest me more than pictures of the characters...and they are so well drawn.

Hmm, I had forgotten about lilies being a symbol of Attolia (it's been about a year since I've read the books). Of course, there are a million different type of lilies, but they generally are assosciated with virtue, purity, faith, and chastity. Most interestingly, and relatable, I think, white lilies are connected to majesty. And these look like water lilies of some sort, probably connecting to Gen and Irene's conversation in the boat when they reach the inlet.

The use of orchids is also interesting. In my above post, I had forgotten that the word is derived from the Greek word for testicle. Lilies and orchids, then, being something of a combination of majesty and power. The orchid is also a symbol of refinement.

PEGGY! Those are SO amazingly gorgeous! I knew the Japanese versions had the lovely covers, but the insides and the back covers and WOW I REALLY NEED THOSE BOOKS NOW. I really love the Thief cover and the shadow hand carried throughout the series. and the warriors on QoA. The KoA covers do look a bit different, but still. so beautiful! Thank you for all the pictures :)

OH, right. I didn't remember mentioning that is all. That could be a very negotiable exchange of gifts :)

Also, you've made me want to make icons :D

I will! There are SO many awesome details!

Yes, please :) though you'll have to give me a couple days, maybe two weeks to get them all done.

Icons would be a nifty holiday gift for the whole community. [hint, hint, 'cause I'm all subtle like that. ;)]

wow... so exciting.

I've been trying to find a way to order them for ages.

I'm having trouble with the ordering form, will they ship it to other countries?

I am not sure how I feel about Attolia's seductive pose. On her throne. It is pretty, but *does not approve*

Can you do a close-up of the front cover of the first one? I can't figure out who/what/where/when that picture is supposed to be, but it's purty.

*manages not to fangirl as crazily this time*

XD

Thanks for posting the pictures!

Beautiful!

But I'm wondering about that very Celtic harp on the spine and cloak fibula (yes, I know they had fibula pins in Sounis/Greece too, but that one looks Irish to me). Strange. Why don't publishers in this country put this much energy into their books?? I like the way Attolia only takes up half of her throne - seems like an open invitation to someone.

I know you probably told us this in the music post, but what exactly is on your Sounis mix? I'm curious what people ended up choosing.

I don't think that's a very fair thing to say.
American publishers publish far too much for one thing. ^_^ Also, Japanese read more graphic novels, so graphics are more important, I think, for young adult books.

I beg your pardon...and apologize with deep contrition to any publishers floating around the community. I suffer from chronic hyperbole and should learn to pay attention to what I'm saying.

I do own very beautiful books, not the least of which is QoA. Vintage, as far as I can tell, turns out consistantly lovely volumes (not only pretty to look at but a joy to hold; I love the way the pages are so, um, floppy. Not the best word but the only one I can come up with) and I'm grateful for the effort that went into producing them.

But none of them have illustrations quite like that (well, my hardback Subtle Knife does do graphics in the page corners - and I hope to get my hands on The Dreamhunters before too long) and it was a surprise.

Never mind. I should stop posting when I'm this tired.

Hmm.
*realizes she is even more musically-underexposed than she thought*

Time to go shopping on itunes!

Interesting. I generally don't associate music with words to books - with a very few exceptions, if it has music, it's more like soundtrack music. But I'm really curious to listen to these ones. Thanks for passing on the link!
