So...here's a discussion question for fun: Who is your favorite MINOR character in the books, and why? Or, which minor character would you like to know more about?
Brilliant question. Part of the problem is that any time you think someone is minor, they become suddenly important. I'd have to go for some of the kings attendants, because I'd love to see being convinced by Sejanus from their point of view.
I always liked Pol. And, even though I can't remember his name, Eugenides's cousin who practiced the Attolian accent, I liked him too, for some strange reason.
Philologos. Because "I am not as stupid as you think I am, even if you are" is such a great line.
And Phresine, who seems to be one of the few people who *gets* Gen and Irene and their relationship.
Oh, and the Magus in KoA. I can't help wondering how he and Gen are going to clash next--and why Eddis trusts him enough to let him wander around her country without an escort...
I'd go with Phresine first, then Philologos. Two characters I want to know more about are Heiro and Sounis. Sounis is a major player but a minor character. We've only seen his tyrannical side, but the Magus is loyal to him and he has a thing for Eddis which is at least partly personal, which intrigues me.
During the war, we've only had a peek at the Eddisian and Attolian courts, but we don't even get a glimpse at how Sounis handles things. We only hear Sounis' actions from the other characters..
And yes, there must be some good in him if the Magus is very loyal to him.
Ooo! I'd love to learn more about Iolanthe, one of Attolia's handmaidens. If only because I was the Fairy Queen in a school production of the G & S operetta 'Iolanthe.' Such a mellifluous name.
Ileia and Phresine because Phresine understands Gen and Attolia's relationship and I think Ileia shows a hint of understanding it more than the they did in QoA too.
Hrm.... Minor character... Well, I would say Pol, but we know him a little too well to be a minor character.
Other than that, I think I would have to say Legarus the Awesomely Beautiful. Because I'd like to know what went through his head when he realized that his lover had betrayed him. And because he's pretty!
Agape, because she does not walk around with her mouth hanging open.
Galen, because his interactions with Gen make me laugh.
Ornon, because I want to know what, exactly, happened to his sheep.
Phresine, because she's awesome, and the story of Kilmun and Gerosthenes is my favorite story told in the series (not only because of Gen's interruptions, though they might have something to do with it)
And.... hrm... The Minister of War, because he needs a name.
I do have a huge soft spot for Ornon, for some reason. I like to see him and Gen butt heads. Like, imagining what their discussion was when Gen was in bed and Ornon came to see him and stomped out angry.
But I think my favorite is the Minister of War. We know very little about him and he's intriguing. What possessed a serious, strict person like him to marry the much-loved Thief's daughter? And I like how much he cares for Gen but that you have to, sometimes, read between the lines to catch it. And their snarky interactions. I love the part where Gen says it was like having a basilisk in the room, and when Eddis pulls her face into a stony glare in imitation. It would be fun if his name was revealed, but I'm not holding my breath.
I am most intrigued by the Magus, although I'm not sure he's a "minor" character. (He's a main character in the first book, at least.) What's the story with his kids? His wife died, (how long ago?) and his kids are being raised somewhere by relatives, (presumably Sounisians?) Now there's a story right there, don't you think? Not to mention how his parents and siblings died when he was young and living in that house near the Eddisian border. Hmmm..., is that an irrelevant coincidence? Or does he have an Eddisian connection we're not yet aware of? I think it's amazing that with such a humble beginning he made himself into the most educated royal advisor in the country. What kept him so motivated? I'm also wondering what his name is, and why no one ever uses it.
I think the wife and kids mentioned in Thief belonged to the soldier that Gen killed. Though the first time I read it, I thought they belonged to Pol. I got the impression that the Magus had never been married.
Yes, the least Eddis could have done for us is to call the Magus by his name when he called her Helen. :)
Pol has a family - Sophos talked about it in the cell, after they were captured. The soldier Gen killed had a wife who had died in a plague (or something), and children parsed out to an aunt.

the first few minor characters popping into my head are..

Ornon, because I want to know what, exactly, happened to his sheep.

The minister of war because he has no name!
Ornon, because of the sheep.
The big Eddisian guy who's name escapes me* and coems to visit Gen when he's ill.
I'd also like to hear more about Gen's past although, clearly, he's not a minor character.
*and escapes everyone in Chatzy.
