Join us tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 2 as we begin our reread of all the QT short stories as a build-up to Moira's Pen. We'll begin with the stories Thief! and Eddis this week. If you don't have copies, you can read all the short stories here.

You can find the chat in The Conspiracy Room at 6 PM CT/7 PM ET. Password to enter the room is here.

This is just the first of our short story rereads and chats. Look at the entire schedule here, and gear up for the masked Halloween chat and Release Party later this month. We'll see if we can convince a certain author to join us for some of the festivities.

Is anyone interested in helping create a "timeline" of events for the entire QT series?

*SPOILERS WILL ABOUND*

I realize many of the events have no specified time, but I still want to get things as straight as possible. I looked into different timeline creators online, but most of them demanded actual dates and few of them would be collaborative. In the end, I decided it would probably be the most simple solution to create a shared google doc and just add events in the form of a expanding table.

Anyway, if you want to contribute, click this link:

Hear ye, hear ye!

Or should that be Here ye, here ye, as in here in [livejournal.com profile] sounis ?

Our official reread has begun as we prepare for the Oct. 6 release of Return of the Thief . Each week we'll reread one of the books and associated short stories, and each Sunday we'll have a discussion chat. Our first chat will take place on Sunday, Aug. 30 at this time:

4pm Pacific Time
5pm Mountain Time
6pm Central Time
7pm Eastern Time

Check the World Clock for more time zones.

Chats will take place in the Conspiracy Room. Password is HERE. All are welcome, but you have to be a member of the community to access the password.

This week's topics of discussion will be The Thief and two short stories: Thief! and Eddis. Scans of the short stories are available HERE for Sounis members.

The chats will have a pretty casual format, but please bring a talking point or two with you. But we'll keep the chats spoiler-free for Return of the Thief, so no speculation about the new book.

Hope to see you all on Sunday!

Greetings,

I no longer seem to have my physical copy of "King" that has the short story at the back. There's an old post in this community with a link to a scanned PDF version but that link is broken. Can anyone help a Sounisian sister out?

Be blessed in your endeavors,

~canon

Never mind I somehow missed the re-posted entry my bad!! You all are the best, thank you <3

I made Gen and Attolia ponies a few weeks ago, and I saw that someone else had done so as well, so I decided to share.

I also wonder if anyone has found the short stories at the end of KoA and CoK online. I have both books in hardback, which means no extras, and I'm sort of bummed to be missing out. Can anybody hook me up?

Another fantastic readaloud, this time the Eddis short story read by [livejournal.com profile] puppeteergirl .  Go and listen, now!

This one will really make you think.  Why is Helen "Eddis" and not "Eddia"?  What did poor cousin Lycos do to be exiled?  Why was Helen heartbroken and relieved when he left?  Have we seen the goddess Periphys any other times?   And extra credit if you remember Helen's three brothers' names.

Hi, Sounis!

I was just in The Conspiracy Room. Awesome! I decided to give up on the plan of backreading every single post before asking any questions. If it's already been talked about to death, just tell me, and I'll find it eventually.

1. This only makes sense if you've read the short story about Eddis in the KoA paperback:
When the wax disk re-appears, it seems like Helen remembers everything. Does that include the comments the gods made about her Thief? And do you think she ever said anything to Gen's grandfather as a result to encourage him in training Gen?
And did it help her have a little more patience with him when he was being a ridiculous imp than she ordinarily would have? (when he was very young, before he had proven his awesomeness)

2. I asked in chat if there had been any discussion of the multiple references in CoK to Gen's ill health, and was told yes (sand colic!) but that infertility hadn't been discussed. It was one of the first things I thought of, though. What does anyone else think?

3. Gen's relationship with his attendants is definitely not ignored in CoK. I was kind of surprised that Philologos, who'd seemed to have such potential, took a back burner to Ion and Hilarion. Any thoughts on that?

(I will have more questions soon, I am sure.)

And here is the intro part, which is not as interesting to me: Stuff about me is in my LJ profile. I was made to read The Thief last year and thought it was quite clever, although I wanted to smack Gen until the last chapter or so. A month or two ago I stumbled onto The Queen of Attolia, and that was when I fell head over heels for the brilliance. I exhorted my husband to read the books, and when it became clear he was not reading closely enough, began reading them aloud to him so I could make sure. ("See? The oatmeal incident!!!") Gen breaks my heart in such a good way. Plus, being a Thief would be super-cool.

I am so glad this community is here!

Hey!
First of all I'd like to introduce myself. I am a long time Gen-addict but am new to the scene of internet fandom. I'd just like to say that so far I love this site and its many supportive and fun fans!

Anyway, I just thought I would post this link for anyone interested in MWT's Thief! which was only published in the August 2000 Disney Adventures Magazine. I'm not sure if anyone on this site has found a link to it yet (forgive me if it has already been posted) so I just thought I'd say where I found it. I spent forever trying to find a link/copy of the mag and finally found one through amazon: if you go to the following website (it's an amazon chat) you can find a person who posted his/her pdf file of Thief! (it's in about the fourth post from the bottom of the page).

It's really short but really good!

So I have a question regarding Gen's family. I know it's been discussed a little before, but we need more in-depth discussion.

How many siblings does Gen have? Where is he in the order of siblings? I always assumed that he was the baby of the family (he seems to have that youngest-child mentality...), especially as what is said about his family is that he has "Brothers and sisters. With the same father." And that "One of [his] brothers is a soldier, and the other is a watchmaker." Now, we know that Sten is older than he, and as Temenus is the same age as Eddis, well, he is obviously older as well.

What I'm really looking for is information on his sisters. More importantly, does he have any younger ones? Given that what is said about his sister is that they are "even married, and honest housewives to boot," I wouldn't think that they would be any younger than he, since <14 seems just a little young to be married and a housewife.

We need this to settle a troublesome discussion with someone about whether or not Gen has a younger sister who might be a Thief. It just seems... doubtfull.

I've been rereading the books lately, and I think Eugenides is way younger than we all thought he was. In The Thief, we know that Eugenides's mother died when he was ten years old (p. 275). We also know that Eugenides's big fight with his father occurred two years before the events of The Thief (p. 269), because Eugenides told his father he wanted to be the next Thief of Eddis (p. 225). Then, in The Queen of Attolia, we learn that Eugenides told his father his intentions immediately after his mother's death (pp. 48-49). Therefore we know that Eugenides was ten years old when he became the next Thief of Eddis --- making him twelve in The Thief, thirteen at the beginning of QoA, and fifteen at the end. That's a good three years younger than I previously believed (and slightly worrisome).

Also, I've come up with an easy (ha) way to approximate Attolia's age at the end of QoA. Just take Eugenides's age (15), add the number of years Eddis has reigned (7), add the number of years Attolia had been on the throne before Eddis's coronation (probably less than 5) and subtract the number of years' age difference between Eugenides now and Attolia when she first married (probably less than 3). That would make her around 25-ish, give or take a few years. I'm feeling better now that I can assume there's only a 10-year age difference between Gen and Irene instead of 20 or more, as I previously thought.
