I have finished Return of the Thief, and really need to process this section from V2Ch3.  I was commenting on the main book discussion thread and realized my question was rapidly becoming too unwieldy for a simple discussion and decided to post as a separate thread.  I have tried this multiple times and haven't been able to get a single cut to work despite multiple approaches and versions, so I've done an lj-cut for each paragraph individually.

So the converstion between Sophos and Helen regarding whether Gen knew of Sounis's proposal and threat to give Hamiathe's stone to Gen if Helen proposed.  Which proposal are they talking about?  It sounds like it would have to be the proposal sent before The Thief that precipitated the events of the entire series, but then why on earth would Sounis choose Gen at this point?

So I was re-reading The Thief (fanfic exchange reasons ... wouldn't you like to know?!?) and came across the section at the end where the Magus describes Gen's sword fight.
...The minister of war snorted. The Magus didn't recognise this as high praise, and he said stiffly: "I've been told his father wanted him to be a soldier. I'd be happy to inform his father that he has a son to be proud of."
Had he really not figured who he was talking to, as Gen assumes? Or is this a clever comment on the Magus' part, to praise Gen in a way his father can't just brush aside?

Then I got a bit further on:
"Tell me," I said, "or I'll get up and strangle you with one hand."
Ouch.

For everyone else, I'm including the interview for those who don't want to be spoiled. It was written by Jenny Kawecki, who may be one of our own, who knows? The only spoiler it includes is the name of the person who narrates TaT, which most of us already know.

Has anyone seen the animated movie EPIC? It's quite good and the animation is beyond amazing, but there's something I noticed..

Did Ronin remind anyone else of the MoW?
And Nod sort of remind anyone of Gen?

Just something I thought of when watching the movie!

Yes, that is a terrible title, and no, I couldn't think of a better one. (But I'll take suggestions.)

Lately I've been thinking about father figures in fiction. And, in the ongoing quest to discuss every single aspect of the Queen's Thief series, I naturally turned the focus of these thinkings onto Gen and company.

I am your father. )

As we prepare for Hurricane Sandy's impact, we hope that allowing her to blow out her frustrations on the Eastern seaboard will allow her to calm down, and perhaps begin to see Eugenides in a new, better light. (Or at least give him a few sand free days as she is busy elsewhere!!:)

More Hurricane names ... )

I want Attoliamore.

3D-images!  Backstories about people and places!  Interactive roleplaying!  Collecting hidden treasures!  I want all this about GEN.

I've been imagining what Attoliamore would look like.  A girl can dream, right?  What would you most like to see in Attoliamore?  Whose backstory?  What places would you like to visit?  What scenes should be reenacted?

 Hello everyone!

I’ve been lurking for a while now, and I figured that after my first re-read of The Thief, I would de-lurk myself and… well, properly join the community, I guess? Hehe… Also because I’m feeling a little lonely not having anyone to talk about Queen’s Thief with. None of my friends are interested in reading it.

So yesterday a most random thought popped in my head and obviously it was about QT. =D
First off-I couldn't get into my account because I kept using the chatzy password, which isn't my password, but that's a whole different story.

The thought: Gen vs MoW in a dual. Who would win?

I mean would MoW always be one step ahead? Or has Gen surpassed his father's sword fighting skills? Would Gen *let* MoW win? I've thought and thought but I still can't come up with a concrete solid idea of which way this would go, so what do you think?
[identity profile] jennifer19l.livejournal.com
...and it occurs to me you all might have a satisfactory answer.  I did look in the archives anywhere I thought this question might have been posed, to no avail.
Ok, here goes:
On pg 254 (paperback) Attolia and Eugenides get to the top of the long staircase and are greeted by various ministers and the Queen's chamberlain.  The chamberlain makes introductions and falters once: "looking over his shoulder.  'He said he wouldn't be here,' one of the ministers said in a carrying whisper"...

Is this in referral to the MoW, who apparently is there in disguise?  If not, could someone please enlighten me?  It's the one line that I keep going back to, wondering *who* does she mean?!?!

Thank you!!!

I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack! It's time for another round of spoiler-free discussion, this time concerning the last third of QoA. I apologize in advance for how much of a blabbermouth I am.

This week we read from “In Ephrata, Attolia sat relaxed on the large chair…” to “And she believed him.”

Favorite line(s): This is a toughie. But, if we’re just going for “singular line(s) I really enjoyed,” I’d have to go with…
“He’s the captain of my personal guard. He’s supposed to guard my person,” Attolia said. (ch. 18)

(Also, “Pol would make him go somewhere on a horse” and “Laughing, he dropped his head onto the bed; then he looked up to grin at Attolia” [both ch. 19]—am I wrong, or is this the first time he grins after that moment in ch. 10 Eddis had where she said she missed his grin?)

Favorite scene(s): Let’s just roll with it!
--Anything involving Teleus and Attolia
--The proposal!
--THE KISS. OMG THE KISS.
--The conversation between Gen and Attolia after the Mede ambush
--The conversation between Attolia and Nahuserfish before the battle
--The first conversation or two between Attolia and Eddis
--Attolia alone in her throne room
--the ending

Thoughts, Questions, Discussion Ideas: Bear with me; each of these chapters keeps competing with the others for FAVORITE CHAPTER EVER, so I have a lot to bring up.

Attolia and Eugenides )

Attolia )

the gods )

Attolia's servants )

I think this touches on most of the notes I’ve taken, so I’ll leave these as the basic provisions for the potluck, but everyone else is free to bring food too! Favorite scenes, lines, moments, issues I didn’t bring up, everything is welcome. And for dessert we can have lots of squeeing about the last page. :-D

Nonetheless...

(Apologies in advance if I am blatantly repeating stuff you've all figured out years ago.  I've looked about and not seen much, but that doesn't mean it's not there.)

Ok, so I've been thinking rather excessively about Gen's family lately, particularly his mother.  I think it would be amazing to get to know her a bit; I get the impression that a lot of Gen's characteristics might be hers (aside from skill with swords, etc., although who knows?) and that she would have the same...fierce but fascinating personality.  Not that I think Gen is excessively fierce, but he can be scary.

Enough babbling.  As a result of my aforementioned thoughts about Gen's mother, I've been thinking about her death, which was reportedly from a fall out of a window in the palace when Gen was young.  He says (to Sophos, I think) in The Thief that she had been dancing on the roof of the palace and slipped coming back in.

Fast forward to KoA, where Gen tells Attolia that he learned to dance square dances from his mother.  He says, "We danced them on the rooftops of the Megaron.  According to legend, the Thief and any partner the Thief chooses will be safe."  (p100 in the hardcover KoA).

Obviously, since his mother wasn't the official Thief, the safety rule didn't apply.  However, I'd always wondered why she'd been dancing on the roof anyway.  I mean, all right, if Attolia can dance in the kitchen gardens, Gen's mother can dance on the palace roof.  But it seems logical to me, knowing what we know now, that she would have been dancing with someone.  Like her son?

I feel like we might have heard more about Gen's mother's death if he had happened to be around, but it may be worth a thought.  I'll probably wake up tomorrow and think about this in a completely different way, though, so who knows?

Go ahead.  Tell me I'm reading things into the text that aren't there, and that I should stop trying to make Gen a tragic hero.  (Hero he is, tragic...hardly.  Anyone who can make me laugh that hard can't be tragic.)

(also in the comments to the Question post below)

What would Gen have done if Attolia had refused to marry him when they were in the boat?  Was he bluffing, or  would he really have killed her?
[identity profile] aspectabund.livejournal.com

Myup. We gots Gen's dad (does he have a name?), Gen, Gen's mom (does SHE have a name?), and Irene/Attolia. You can tell that I started with Gen's dad, since I press like a demon on my tablet at first and then lighten up as I go.

I have decided, whether it be canon or no, that Gen looks more like his mum than his dad. And Gen's dad's got old man podge 'cos there's no point in being old if you can't have a bit of podge. I wanted Gen's mom to be more "cute-pretty" than "stunningly gorgeous," and so stuck her next to the hot chick to make sure she didn't wander into THAT territory. I appear to be channeling Angelina Jolie with Attolia. I don't picture Ms. Jolie as Attolia though...

I was gonna do more, but it's 1:20am and I was only doing this to chase away insomnia, and since my eyes are feeling itchy, it is now bedtime. I will lol heartily if anything I made up this night is in any way canon. :)

EDIT: Looked at Gen's dad and mum this morning and wanted to solidify them a bit more. Mum took a few tries (the bottom two heads), but MoW I nailed on the first try, probably because the MoW is awesome like that. I also stuck a MoW-aged version of Gen to the right of him to make sure they look similar. I went "D'awwww," immediately followed by "lol." I gave Gen more hair and I imagine he'll gray a bit later (he never had to raise himself after all, but the MoW did), and figured that, if/when Gen becomes capable of growing a beard, he'll go all out to make himself feel better, lol. I think the MoW is better looking... but Gen looks more kingly. :)

I am reading aloud King of Attolia for the first time. <3 My younger siblings just were initiated into the Queen, and I realized what an awesome thing getting to read KoA to them would be and made a unilateral decision It Should Be So.

Today was the first installment. Expect regular updates as I savor the experience...

I was glancing though QoA, and saw a quote from Gen's father, "I can hardly refuse" about bearing a message to Eddis--after being kicked in the head for trying to mercifully strangle his son.
It occured to me--Gen's parading, outrageous side must be the Queen's Thief line. His mother was probably just like that. But he also has a dry side, a sardonic sense of humor that...is from his father.
"Like most men, I have two grandfathers. One of them was Eddis."
Queen Helen of Eddis is very dry (and not at all outrageous).
No wonder he sometimes blindsides you with the things he says--for a while he'll be ridiculous, and then that sly, cynical bent will emerge--and HOW.

What do you think of this speculation? Have you seen it before, am I slow?

...Oh, how I love this book.
[identity profile] dawnbluewings.livejournal.com
So I have a question regarding Gen's family. I know it's been discussed a little before, but we need more in-depth discussion.

How many siblings does Gen have? Where is he in the order of siblings? I always assumed that he was the baby of the family (he seems to have that youngest-child mentality...), especially as what is said about his family is that he has "Brothers and sisters. With the same father." And that "One of [his] brothers is a soldier, and the other is a watchmaker." Now, we know that Sten is older than he, and as Temenus is the same age as Eddis, well, he is obviously older as well.

What I'm really looking for is information on his sisters. More importantly, does he have any younger ones? Given that what is said about his sister is that they are "even married, and honest housewives to boot," I wouldn't think that they would be any younger than he, since <14 seems just a little young to be married and a housewife.

We need this to settle a troublesome discussion with someone about whether or not Gen has a younger sister who might be a Thief. It just seems... doubtfull.

Edit:  This is a day for coincidences...read this.

Back to your regularly scheduled post...

All right...someone brought up the "what did Gen say to his dad?" question.  Seeing as I just finished my biannual (...is that the right term for "twice a year" or does it mean "every two years"?  The former is what I'm meaning to say) deep cleaning reading of QoA (it clears the pores right up), I must admit that I look for an answer to that too.  So far I'm liking what Checkers said on the original post.

So I have two questions of my own, as well as partial answers I've sort of worked out--or at least the thinking behind the questions.

1) When did Eddis know that Gen loved Attolia?

I think he laid out the marriage as part of his plan to the ministers, the one where she gets really mad and yells at him (after he returns from his ten-day "hiding' trip), but when did she find out he loved her?  Who else knew, going in?  His father?  Xenophon?  Stenides?   (Corollary that isn't really corollating at all: Will Stenides make an appearance in the next book?  *crosses fingers and mutters oh please oh please oh please...*)

I do admit, though, that I think Irrel got her reaction down perfectly.  :-b

2) What sort of communications did Gen and Attolia have going on before she caught him?

By this I mean he was leaving all those notes and stuff--what did they say? I get the impression, from rereading QoA, that they know each other--I mean, I'm not saying they have deep long conversations together, but I think there's been some communication there. Obviously Gen knows Attolia well, from spying on her--does she get to know him from the notes?  How much do their conversations while they're dancing help them exchange information about themselves?

Also, I think Attolia falls in love with Gen when she stays at his cell--"because she knew, even then, that she would turn on any guard who mocked the Thief's pain"--but I guess my real question is how well did she know him before then?

[identity profile] caseylev.livejournal.com
This has been pugging me for ages, and I can't figure it out. Beyond conjecture, I don't think it can be figured out. But I'll ask anyway. So, to the point: in QoA, during the Mede/Eddis battle after Gen kidnaps the Queen, just after the Eddisians surredner, this happens:

"The gray-haired man spoke again, and Eugenides replied. Whatever he said made the older man give a sour laugh."

So I've gathered that the gray-haired man is the Minister of War, love him, but what does Gen say? Just before that they speak, too, and I'm guessing the Minster of War said something about esccaping, or the battle, or the like, asked something, rather. But why do they speak again? And what does Gen say to make the Minister of War laugh? I'm wondering, really, if the Minister knows that Gen loves the Queen yet? Or does he thinks its an arranged marriage? Ugh, I have no idea, it just bugs me, one of those things that toys with your brain, especially if you love the Minister of War. ;-)

I have a question about a scene in QOA I'd like to get your thoughts on...

In QOA, Attolia had sarcastically told Gen she would wear the ruby earrings he had given her when she was willing to marry him--which at this point would be never. However, Attolia wears the earrings for the first time when Eugenides is captured by the Medes and awaiting his fate in her megaron. Do you think Eugenides realized her intentions when he saw her wearing them and that she was going to side with Eddis to drive out the Medes? (This is on page 219). Also, I wonder what was running through his head when he saw her wearing them. Was he thinking something to the effect of "Hallelujah, she's not going to kill me after all?" or maybe "Hallelujah, she's going to marry me?!" Or did he not even notice the earrings? What do you all think? (I love this passage because a lot of intrigue is going on without Attolia's enemies or the reader knowing at first).

Jessica
