This week we’re reading from the beginning of the Prologue, "The queen waited..." through the end of Chapter 5, "...knowing himself entirely guilty of what the king had not condescended to assume him of."

Prologue + Chapters 1-5 of The King of Attolia
These discussions are spoiler free for the new short stories, “The Wine Shop” and “The Knife Dance,” as well as the “Thick as Thieves” arc.

There will be spoilers for books 1-4, so if you haven’t read all the published books yet, proceed with caution.

Prologue
The prologue gives us four little snippets, each is Turner giving the reader hints about the main players in this book.

In the first Attolia waits for Attolis on their wedding night. We get a glimpse at the difficulty of their union, but also this: "Today she had yielded the sovereignty of her country to Eugenidies, who had given up everything he had ever hoped for, to be her king." And with that one line she reminds us that Eugenides never wanted to be king, as demonstrated in the final scene of Chapter 19 of QoA.

The second shows us Ornon's schadenfreude at the new king's "fetters". He seems almost sinister. In case you'd forgotten, Ornon almost succeeded in making Eugenides "safely dead" in Chapter 2 of QoA.

The third introduces us to Costis, a responsible guard whom the captain, Teleus, respects. They both believe the king to be "Attolia's most dangerous enemy." We find out later (Chapter 14) that Eugenides intended to "change the mind of the man next to {Teleus}." This is the first peek at their minds.

And the final tells us that Relius fears the king and wants to limit his powers. Which is ironic since the king doesn't want to rule and the king is the one who saves him from the queen's punishment.

Chapter 1 - Wait until your father gets home!
While Eugenedes and Costis wait for the Queen to come home from hunting to issue a punishment, we learn that Costis's best friend is Aristogiton called Aris and that Costic came from a land-owning (petronoi) farm family, but that Aris's family are landless okloi. We are introduced to Laecdomon (whom the king could do without) and Legarus the Awesomely Beautiful guard and Sejanus. We learn that the king is most unkingly in dress and manner and that he has not lost his ability to enrage people.

"He said the only thing worse than being wrong in a family argument was being right."

"You don't walk like a king, you don't stand like a king, you sit on the throne like...like a printer's apprentice in a wineshop."

Chapter 2 - Now you've done it!
The queen comes home, and the king neatly chains Costis to Teleus. Costis is volun-told to be the king's sparring partner, and Teleus agrees to start doing his job. When the king lets Costis see a glimpse of his real self, Costis thinks he's still dissembling.

"Unkingly, in so many ways, My King. Not the least of which is listening to your guard tell you so."

    "A snake," repeated the queen.
"A black one. A friendly one."

"I didn't know, Your Majesty." It wasn't an excuse. It was an admission of failure.

    "Were you lying?"
"I never lie," he said piously. "About what?"

Chapter 3 - Making your life miserable.
Teleus makes it clear that he expects better things from his men, even if he doesn't actually respect the king, and Costis skips his first sparring match (but not the second) and gets his first taste his new responsibilities. Aristogiton is pretty sure he delivered the note to release the hounds, the king continues to sneak about in his own palace (which no one realizes, even when they see him!), and Costis has not lost the respect of his fellow guards, which baffles him, and the king promotes him to lieutenant.

"So, so, so," said Aris, "at least my honor will be intact."

"Shall we begin with the first exercise?"

"Your guard is low," Eugenides said calmly...

"When breakfast was over, the king stepped around the table and bet to kiss his wife's cheek."

"I was listening," the king said, aggrieved. "I closed my eyes to listen better."
    "What did you hear?"
"I'm not sure," he said. "That's why I was listening so closely..."

"Out on the steps, Costis stopped to look at the schedule. He stared at the sheet in consternation. The king hadn't needed to hang him; he would be dead of exhaustion within the month."

Chapter 4 - Keeping your life miserable.
Sejanus leads the pack in bullying the king, and the king picks on Costis in turn. Costis receives mysterious study guides. The king gets a lesson in wheat, makes a joke, and sits alone in his room.

"Sejanus liked his jokes. Costis was growing tired of them."

"Thank gods I didn't ask about fertilizer," he said.

Chapter 5 - Secrets.
This chapter is very long! Relius witnesses the king's reluctance to rule but misinterprets it. The king visits Artadorus in the middle of the night, and he, too, misinterprets it. Sejanus continues his quest to irritate the king, and the king does the same to Costis. Dite writes a song about the King's Wedding Night, the king loses his temper over it, and Costis earns a day off to recover.  Ornon is no longer pleased that the king is not. The undersecretary for provisions to the navy nearly takes a very short trip to meet Eugenides's cousins, the queen offers the king some wine, and the king requests a dance instead. Eugenides tells Dite that the queen cried on her wedding night, which makes Dite his friend. Costis tells the king he would never reveal confidential information, then does so with both the queen and Baron Susa, and the valet tells him what he overheard Sejanus and Baron Erondites discussing in the baths. The assistant to the Ambassador from Eddis maneuvers Eugenides into building a bridge. Relius is arrested.

"Don't give up hope just because chances are slim."
"For the assassination or the heir, Your Majesty?" asked Costis.

"He wondered how the Attolians thought Eugenides had managed to become king if he was the idiot they assumed him to be. Perhaps because they had never seen him as the Thief, with his head thrown back and a glint in his eye that mad the hair on the back of a man's neck rise up... As a ten-year-old boy, the Thief of Eddis could stop a grown man in his tracks with a single look."

"Don't be afraid. Before I stole Hamiathes's Gift out from under your nose, these were the only dances I knew."
"I am not afraid," she said coldly."
"Good," said the king. "Neither am I."

"Spare me," said Attolia, "and my court, from dancing on the roof."
"It probably only works in Eddis."

"I would never stoop to revealing information I knew was private."
"Not even if you don't like the person whose privacy you are protecting?"
    "Especially not then."

"Costis walked on through the palace and down to the Guard's barracks, knowing himself entirely guilty of what the king had not condescended to accuse him of."

Closing thoughts:
If this book is Costis's Hero's Journey, Chapter 5 brings us to #6 TESTS, ALLIES AND ENEMIES. Everyone is being positioned for the main action. Relius's arrest is less important than his absolution later on. Costis is still only beginning to empathize with Eugenides, who is actively avoiding being the king. He would still much rather be the queen's husband and Thief.

Next week we will continue with KoA chapters 6-10 lead by [livejournal.com profile] agh_4!

I had so much fun during the character chat, that I thought it was worth it to pay ten bucks in order to save the full transcript. I do think it's a pretty sneaky way for Chatzy to get money. Honestly, it is better than ads though. Can you imagine being forced to watch a commercial for toilet paper before you are allowed to enter the chat room? Bleh.

Anyway, Livejournal won't let me paste the chat directly into this post, saying that it is too large. So I made a google doc and changed the settings so that anyone can see it, google doc users or not. Let me know if you can't access the link. There is a fun surprise ending (some of you are already aware of it though.)

As we prepare for Hurricane Sandy's impact, we hope that allowing her to blow out her frustrations on the Eastern seaboard will allow her to calm down, and perhaps begin to see Eugenides in a new, better light. (Or at least give him a few sand free days as she is busy elsewhere!!:)

More Hurricane names ... )

What if...

So, I have just been considering crazy plot twists that might make themselves shown in the next Queen's Thief book(s)
I've been thinking about Gen's secret desires for power alluded to in The King of Attolia in a conversation between Irene and Relius:

"But I think Eugenides is afraid."
"Of what?"
"Of failing," said Attolia, as though that fear, at least, Relius should have recognized. "Of stealing my power from me."
"You would only be stronger."
"I know," Attolia soothed him. "I did not say I'm afraid. He is, though, I think. Afraid of his own desire for power."

And Teleus says at the end

"That one," -he nodded toward the closed door- "will rule more than just Attolia before he is done. He is an Annux, a king of kings.

Earlier on in KoA Gen mentions that the Queen must have a breaking point to her strength, so as strong as she is she isn't invincible, and now that Eugenides is sovereign over Attolia, Eddis and Sounis, his power is growing (Sophos and Helen were sworn to him, not Irene.) So I am interested to see where Attolis and Attolia will end up.

Mostly though! I am curious what OTHER outrageous and crazy plot twists others have considered.

It started with a post about some friendly competition during the YA Fantasy Showdown,

to which aspectabund said this:  He'd just like, catch it and throw it back harder and stick it right in her EYE!

http://community.livejournal.com/sounis/398470.html?thread=9934470#t9934470 (the orignal post and discussion)

and went on a tangent nicely into a discussion about Attolia and her infrequent smile, the real one, mind you not the scary "I'll eat your liver for breakfast" smile.

To which Jade suggested this side discussion deserves its own post. :-D

The perks of study abroad include being able to visit really cool museums that don't exist in your itty bitty home town. Even better perks include finding little bits of Attolia, Eddis, and Sounis as I travel (especially since I've always associated the three more with Spain than anywhere else). This week I went to the Museo Naval (Navy Museum) in Madrid. It mostly had models of famous Spanish ships, but one really cool section included old weapons. Including these really cool muskets from 1600, 1525, and 1630 (top to bottom). They made me really excited since I can defintely see this being the type of gun issued to Attolia's guard. They're functional but ornate at the same time.

Pictures below cut. I have more if anyone's as interested in 17th century Spanish weaponry as I am.
See Pictures )
Okay, I added a powder horn from the same time period as the muskets, the stock of the 1600 musket, a pair of firing mechanisms shaped like snakes/dragons, and Sounis' fleet right before Eugenides' plan gets to it.

Time is ticking on, and there are already less than three weeks until CofK - the anticipation is killing me! And there's nothing, short of inventing time-travel, I can do except to patiently wait... and read.

And so we come to the fabulous middle section of KoA! I was very excited to get to do the post on such an action-packed section of the book, AND so was the lovely pigrescuer. As it really wasn't fair to ask Jade to ignore puppy eyes from one or both of us, we made the preparation for this section a joint effort! And just so you know - most of the good ideas and observations are PR's. I just took notes and spouted crazy theories a lot, during our nearly six hours of going over the chapters together (we rambled a lot).  We spent most of that time reading out/reciting favourite lines, gibbering excitedly at each other, and saying "poor Costis" and "Gen's an absolute genius" at five-second intervals. Despite all this, we did manage to get some points ready for discussion.

I apologise that this read-along is a day late. LJ crashed on me last night and I lost most of what I'd written, which... set me back a bit :( Also, my apologies for the strange variations in the typeface! I'm not sure how to fix that; I've tried a coupla times...

So this week, for our
spoiler-free discussion:
Reading from line: The stool hit the wall with a satisfying crash.
Ending at line: Weaving with fatigue, dismissed by Teleus when they were halfway to the infirmary, Costis returned to his room, freed himself of belt and breastplate, and fell, otherwise fully dressed, onto the bed.

Sounisian shout-outs (and Eddisian 'woot's) in this section: To philia_fan  and tencups_i_swear, both of whom take their names from a passage in chapter seven, and how could I forget
[livejournal.com profile] pigrescuer , whose name comes from my...

Favourite Lines:
(
[info]tearoha) Trying to choose one line from this section is like... trying to do a very hard thing. But for a crowning moment of funny, it must be this one: "Ah. They [the attendants] have seen me in my nightshirt." He looked down at his sleeve, embroidered with white flowers. "Not in your nightshirt, though."
He was fully awake and himself again.

This week's read-along is laid out in a somewhat English class-y manner (I'm sorry!) by chapter, with a short synopsis of events, with notes and questions, and then at the end are some general comments, ideas and discussions. Please bear with me - there's so much to talk about that we tried to do it all. There are a lot of notes. Read more under the handily-labelled cuts! All page numbers are from the paperback edition.

Chapter Six )

Chapter Seven )

Chapter Eight )
Chapter Nine )
Chapter Ten )

And I think that's about it!
Every time I read this passage I end up in awe of it. it's so very jam-packed with events, subtle understatement, and misdirection. I like the themes, some of which we picked up on here: Revelations, Names, Identity, Public/Private roles, Kindness, and Bed. I think I've said enough though, so for anyone else who wants to pick up on one of these ideas and run with it, please do.

Next week: Chapters 11-14 KoA.

[identity profile] sgwordy.livejournal.com
Onward we march, getting closer each day to ACoK! Huzzah!   But please no ACoK spoilers!

Reading from line: The queen waited.
Ending at line: Costis walked on through the palace and down to the Guard's barracks, knowing himself entirely guilty of what the king had not condescended to accuse him of.

General Thoughts/Questions:
We're on our third POV and I know it's been discussed before but thoughts again? I love the POV switches as I feel they lend depth to the stories. Can you imagine KoA from other perspectives?

Right off in the Prologue I'm struck by mwt's fantastic turns of phrase. Something as simple as "unsubstance" is really quite fantastic.

When do we get Ornon's book? :)

Was KoA the first in the series you read? If so, what were your initial thoughts on the characters? After reading the whole series? This was not the first I read and I've always wondered what I would have thought if it was the first in the series I came by.
Detailed Thoughts/Questions )

I can't wait to see what interests everyone from the random stuff I posted and/or any other topics.
[identity profile] elle-winters.livejournal.com
I recently joined Sounis and well...I've just had so many questions, there is a good chance that they have all been throughly discussed already, but who doesn't love a good discussion?

The Theif
1. Gen says something about how his father came into the library and asked him if he knew about Sounis's purposal to Eddis, and then MoW leaves, leaving a bag of coins on Gen's desk. The scene is pretty vague. Did MoW want Gen to go out and find the H-gift? Is this when MoW accepts that Gen is a theif?

2. Gen says the magus couldn't possibly have known if he had a sweetheart because he changed his records...does this allude the possiblity that he has? had a sweetheart/s that is? Its a stupid question, I mean I dont think he has, but I think it was possible that everyone in Eddis's court expected a courtship with the Queen's cousin Agape?

KoA
1. In the Theif and QoA Gen is pretty pissed about Sounis trying marry Eddis but in the King, Gen actually suggests it.(that Eddis marry Sounis) WHY?

Eddis also asks the Magus himself, her reasoning is because Gen is the KING of Attolia. Does that pose a threat to her?

2. Gen goes into the prison cell to see Relius
a. He shouts "I CAN DO ANYTHING I WANT" is Gen messing with Teleus, or is he honestly upset?

b. Later when his Eddisian cousins come they ask "did he think that was the king of attolia talking" what do they mean? Did Gen say it out of anger, was it actually the Theif of Eddis talking?

c. Possible Relius and Attolia? (one sided of course)
Gen says to Relius 'you must hate her now' he seems pretty serious and almost hopeful (not sure exactly about the quote), was Gen actually hoping Relius would hate attolia?
in one scene he also kisses Attolia and laughs asking Rel if he's jealous (I'm assuming its because he gets to kiss the queen? but being Gen he kisses Rel on the head too :)

There is point when one of the Attolians brings up Gen's cousins and how they held him down in a catchet of water until he insulted his family...Ornon says something like "they didnt know how close to danger they had come"
would Gen actually have him executed? I dont think so, but then what possible danger could Gen have posed?

Oh and at the end of KOA Gen apologizes to Teleus for "what was done but not done well" or something like that...but I think he's done pretty well...so why apologize?
[identity profile] aspectabund.livejournal.com

Here we go, more drawings. I left in the process sketches in case anyone was wondering how I do things - doodle, and nab bits from each that seem to fit. The Teleus I like best is the one to the far left of the three, but I think he still needs some tweaking.

Finally figured out Costis's design, and amusingly I seem to picture him as a young, slightly chunkier John Travolta. I think he needs to be a bit wider at the shoulders than how I drew him, but other than that I'm happy with him. Gen's just... there, haha. I've had him designed for ages.

Am I the only one who pictures Gen to be short? Not like really short, just shorter than most guys, maybe 5'6" or 5'7"? I just think it would be hilariously appropriate, given his personality, and would add the the whole "he shore dunt look like much" thing. Also, Attolia DEFINITELY needs to be taller than him, imo.

Anyway. Will draw more tomorrow night and over the weekend, so you'll probably get more of these over the next few days. Gotta do Eddis and Attolia, as I seem to ignore them in favour of their attractive male comrades.

I recently noticed a particular exchange in The King of Attolia that doesn't make very much sense. At least not yet.

EDIT: Kay, looked at it again and concluded that he was definitely too dark all over, especially his hair. So I switched it for a lighter one. :) He's still impossibly flat, what with no very dark areas, but I seem to be the only one being picky so I'll just shush now.

Okay, does this look like Teleus? Apparently, he's also Robert Downey Jr., which is actually kind of fitting when you think about it, and his skin colour clashes with his own armour, so, uh, gotta work on that. Not even sure how dark Attolians are anyway. I'm wondering whether he's blonde for some reason as well, or at least has lighter-coloured hair.

Anyway. Does this at least vaguely resemble Teleus to you?
[identity profile] aspectabund.livejournal.com
Arggggh I wish to draw fanart but I cannot find my boooooks. For some reason, I've never been able to get a mental image of certain characters, or cannot separate them from each other in my mind. Quick! Character descriptions!

Nahblahblah (can only remember red beard D:), Kamet, and how do Pol and Teleus differ? Lol, Teleus is basically Pol to me, although every now and then I picture one less chin stubbly than the other. And, I am sad to admit these ones but... I can't remember either Magus' or Sophos' descriptions. I know Sophos' personality, which tends to help with how they look, but I rarely read character descriptions. Because I am dumb.

Now, this question came to me at 11 o'clock last night, during a reread of KoA. After Teleus and Aris's squad are released by the queen, Enkelis is still in charge, for a little. But there is a part, just one line really, on page 202 of the PB edition of KoA where someone says that "Nobody even knows where Teleus is". Now, this is probably just my overstressed brain coming up with something to relieve the terror of finals, but I was just wandering if anybody had any theories as to where exactly Teleus disappeared to.
[identity profile] aged-crone.livejournal.com
I figured my last entry on this topic was far enough back to warrant a new one.

1)Why does Dite go to Gen's room when he's hurt? Okay, they're getting along better, but I didn't get the idea that they were good friends; doesn't sitting by his sickbed seem a bit much?

2)How did Gen know Relius was lying, in the scene with the spies who had been injured and sent back by the Mede? Was it just insight into the way Relius was speaking, or did he have other information that conflicted with what Relius was saying?

3)Near the end of the book, when Costis is hauled out of bed to get the king down from the battlements: doesn't it seem a bit unfair that the guards/attendants would be hanged if Gen fell? I can see their being punished for not saving him from an outside attack, but if he's stupid enough to get drunk and fall off a wall, how is it their fault?

4)Where did all those scars of Gen's come from? Not the side, or the one at his shoulder, or the fetters or the dog bites, but the thigh and all the others. (Not the bruises, either; those I understand).

5)How is it that neither Relius nor Teleus had figured out that the queen loved Eugenides? (Or, come to that, that they weren't told?) And that Relius only seems to figure out that Gen became king only because he wanted to marry Attolia after he's arrested, tortured, etc.? I know Attolia's not terribly revealing, but those two were closer to her than anybody else.
[identity profile] aged-crone.livejournal.com
I've been rereading KoA again, and have come up with a couple more things to post...

For instance: "The king rarely missed an opportunity to insult the Captain of the Guard, but to the Secretary of the Archives he was unfailingly polite. It made Relius feel ill." (p. 75)

So - why is Gen polite to Relius and rude to Teleus? Because he knows what will annoy each of them most, maybe? I don't think that he dislikes Teleus more than he does Relius - or does he? Anybody else got an opinion?

And: Just after Attolia speaks with Relius and convinces him that he can't go off and keep goats somewhere, the king and queen learn that Nahuseresh had provided Sounis with the assassins who attacked Gen. "In an interview that morning with the new Secretary of the Archives, the Baron Hippias..." (p. 332). Do you think Hippias is going to be demoted and Relius given back that title? Or will Relius be doing a different job now?
[identity profile] avian-xj.livejournal.com
 Let's talk about Teleus.

There was some speculation in Chatzy today. What is Teleus' private life like (if he has one)? Also: thoughts about his devotion to Attolia and to the law and order around her? Isn't it adorable how protective he gets? Speculation about Teleus' backstory? Costis is a younger version of Teleus so what does that say for Costis' future/ Teleus' past?

Comments and thoughts would be lovely, but everyone must promise not to give Checkers any reason to use the idiot icon! :P

So, Willow and I were talking late tonight...and you know where that can lead...

[identity profile] checkers65477.livejournal.com
I read my lovely ARC of KoA a year ago and have decided to reread.

Why do you think Gen gave Costis the unwatered wine?

Oh, and: "The queen turned back to face him. "I could hang you," she said. Eugenides looked up at her. "You missed your chance for that," he said."
= teh flirtiness, don't you think?
[identity profile] checkers65477.livejournal.com
I lent my copy of The King of Attolia to someone (no, of course I didn't loan my beautiful hardback) and she had a question when she was finished.

Although Costis lost his temper and punched Gen, she wondered if Gen treated Costis unfairly by involving him in all the court intrigue, shaming him to his family, and manipulating him again and again.

And, I know we talked about this before, but how do you think Gen really felt about Costis? Was he angry because Costis punched him, since Costis only did what Gen wanted him to? Why did he choose Costis for all this?
