We still don't know who Gitta Kingsdaughter is. I'm fine with that. If I remember correctly, MWT said that she wasn't actually coming into the story.

But her tutor is Tykus Namikus. I don't know exactly what language Attolian, Sounisian, and Eddisian are based on. Medieval Greek, maybe? Wikipedia claims that: The word name comes from Old English nama; cognate with Old High German (OHG) namo, Sanskrit नामन् (nāman), Latin nomen, Greek ὄνομα (onoma), and Persian نام (nâm), from the Proto-Indo-European (PIE) *h₁nómn̥.

Is there any way that Tykus Namikus could mean King-Namer? I can certainly see Kamet becoming tutor to a royal princess a few decades down the road. He reads and writes in five languages, and I'm sure he could pick up others pretty quickly if need be.

Does this make any sense to anyone else?

Here you go! The transcript from last night's chat. I wasn't able to be there, but it looks as if the people in the Conspiracy Room tackled ccwtaylor to wrestle her copy of Return of the Thief away from her. I'm sorry I missed all the fun!

Read all about the shenanigans here.

A British friend of mine brought it to my attention that the story at the end of my hardback copy of TaT was not in her British copy. It's at the very end and it's titled, "Envoy." It's super short, but I thought you all might like to read it if you haven't. I've added it to the Short Story post, and you can read it here.

You have to be a member of the [livejournal.com profile] sounis community to read the short stories.

Edited to add: the story IS in all versions of the book; my friend was mistaken.

Sorry I missed the chat last night, everyone! I took a Sunday afternoon power nap, that turned into a Sunday evening lazy nap. In recompense, a gift! In the form of an RoT countdown clock. It's very satisfying to watch the seconds go down. Can you believe it's already the final week of the community reread? RoT is so close! If, like me, you missed the chat, check out the transcripts.

We're spending this week with Kamet and Costis! We will be rereading Thick as Thieves. I'm excited to discuss this one, since it has not been out as long as the other books. We may not have it completely memorized yet... The Conspiracy Room chat for Thick as Thieves will be held Sunday, September 27th at 6pm CT. Have a schedule.

Join the Conspiracy... )

Happy reading everyone, and...take a shot every time Kamet facepalms see you at the chat!

PS: I was planning to have the last Sunday before RoT comes out (October 4th) be a spoiler/speculative chat for the new book. However, I'm undecided on how spoiler-y it should be and wanted to scope out the popular opinion of all spoiled (sweet) Sounisians. Would you prefer an anything goes spoiler chat or limit spoilers to say... just the summary and MWT's hints video? I am inclined towards all spoilers being fair game.

The midnight release party chat (October 5th) will be spoiler free.

I don't post often, but I have a question and I am wondering what you all think: on the cover of TaT, their are FIVE crowns.  I have differing theories for four of the crowns, but not five.  At least, the only one I can come up with...well, I don't like it.  (And yes, while I don't own the newest edition of the books with the new covers, I realize that there is a different crown on each book.) So, who/which country/what do you think each of them represent?  Any ideas?

Welcome to section two of the Thick as Thieves community wide re-read. This week we’re covering chapters 4-6 (p86-181), that’s from lines: “We were more than halfway to Perf.” to “I dropped beside him.” All page numbers are from the 2017 hardcover edition.

If you were starting to get bored of Costis’s and Kamet's caravan jaunt through the desert, hang in there, because things are about to get dicey.

First a summary... )

Section Two Discussion )

Next week we will be covering chapters 7-10 and [livejournal.com profile] whataliethatwas will be your lead. Happy reading!

Welcome to Week One of our Thick As Thieves reread! This week we’ll discuss Chapters 1 through 3, pages 1 - 85 in the hardback edition.

[livejournal.com profile] ninedaysaqueen said we can structure this however we want, so I decided to break it into the elements I like most to consider when I’m reading one of Megan’s books. For TaT, those would include an important theme, the hints and tricks that Megan lays out for us, the humor in the book, the growth of the main character(s), and the stories/poems. Add your comments and let’s start a discussion!

Numbers in parenthesis refer to page numbers in the American hardback edition.

Since I don’t see any objections to my proposed plans to celebrate the upcoming release of The Return of Thief (thanks for the feedback, BTW), let’s move forward with the organizing!

In order to give us some direction during the “reflections” portion that will be covering the first four books in the series (if you’re already confused as to what I'm talking about read THIS first), I wanted to come up with a set of questions for us to answer each week. The idea being that we'll do a set of these each week for each book, but the questions will remain the same.

Here’s what I got so far…

Questions )

Please, let me know if you have ideas for questions or don't like any of these. We’re set to begin reflections for The Thief on Sunday, January 20th, so in a couple of weeks we’ll get started. It’s hard to believe RoT is out there somewhere being edited and all that stuff!

TaT Re-read )

If you’re planning to re-read/skim the QT series before the final chapter hits (or steals) the shelf, I hope you'll decide to join us!

[identity profile] terri-testing.livejournal.com
We readers learned, at the end of Thick as Thieves (TaT), the real reason why Gen stole Kamet from Nahuseresh:

“It wasn’t spite or friendship,” I said, glancing sideways at the king…. This was why I had been brought from the Empire, and this was why the Namreen had hunted us so relentlessly.  Not because Nahuseresh had been murdered, but because the emperor feared I could tell the king of Attolia where he was hiding his navy.” (TaT)

Just as, at the end of The King of Attolia (KoA) we found out the real reason why Gen decided to interfere with young Costis’s life.  Not spite, and not black humor, as Costis had thought throughout the book.  Policy.

“Sometimes, if you want to change a man’s mind, you change the mind of the man next to him first…. Archimedes said that if you gave him a lever long enough, he could move the world.  I needed to move the Guard.  I needed to move you [Teleus].” (KoA, p. 381)

Gen said this, so it must be true.  Right?  In the denouement, no less.  It’s not like Gen ever is known to state untruths or partial truths, or Turner to mislead her readers.

Yes, I've finally finished that elusive TaT playlist I've been talking about for like... two years. hangs head in shame

Anyhow, I hope it's worth the wait, as I've made not only one but three new playlists! Now with new and improved listen-ability! There are some old favorites in here, but also plenty of new stuff. It's been several years since I've made a playlist for these books, so there were many new songs to add.

I used Spotify to build these, but you need a subscription to listen to the songs in their entirity. I've included a link to the Spotifiy version if you do happen to have a subscription, but as I assume most of you probably do not, I've made Youtube playlists of all the songs.

If you're confused as to why I choose a particular song (some of them are for very specific parts of the books) there is a note for each song below. Enjoy!

Listen! )

Any songs you think I should add?

This is the final week of the re-read. I hope you've been having fun revisting the lastest QT road trip! This week we're reading Chapters 11-13+Envoy (p270-337)* 68 pages total or approximately 2 hours of the audio narration if you're listening. Reading schedule is HERE if you need it. We'll also be wrapping up the re-read with a closing live chat in the Conspiracy Room on Sunday, June 3rd.

Revist Kamet's unexpected sympathy with pirates, prophetic paying of fasteners, kingnaming, overnight dungeon accomodations, and heartbreaking poetry readings.

What time is the chat?

5pm Pacific Time
6pm Mountain Time
7pm Central Time
8pm Eastern Time

See you there and happy reading!

*page numbers are from the 2017 hardcover edition

And the re-read continues! This week we're reading Chapters 7-10 (p182-296)* 88 pages total or approximately 2 hours of the audio narration if you're listening. We're really getting into the good stuff now! Reading schedule is HERE if you need it along with more information on how you can participate if you're just joining us.

Revisit easier than expected mountain climbing, unwise love affairs, cheery pot tinning, talk like a ghost day, and Costis pulling a WWED (what would Eugenides do). Also, if you're interested... I found a video of a pot being tinned over a fire in India. It's very cool to see and is so close to how it's described in the book.

Happy reading!

A big thank you to all who participated in the Thick as Thieves map giveaway. We received many, many entries, and all your predictions were various combinations of insightful, heartbreaking, and hilarious. Make sure you read them all if you haven't already. When the time comes, we may find out that some of these are right!

In the meantime, the Thick as Thieves paperback is now available in stores and online. Go HERE for ordering options.

I entered everyone's names into random.org and let the gods choose from there, and please, remember to thank Harper Collins for allowing us to host this contest.

I feel a little like Effie during the Hunger Games right now...

EDIT: If heard back from all the winners, and have sent along your information to Harper Collins. Thanks for getting back to me so promptly and for all your notes of gratitude. I really appreciate it!

Severally of you asked if there was a way to thank Harper Collins more directly, and I was going to recommend that you could thank them via Tumblr by tagging the Epic Reads blog. Once you have the map all set up and displayed, you could also share a photo. Epic Reads may find that beneficial for promotion of the paperback. I'd also recommend tagging MWT's Tumblr. Feel free to share a photo here on [livejournal.com profile] sounis as well. I'm sure we'd all love to see the maps!

Be Blessed in Your Endeavors )

You'll all be receiving further instructions as replies to your original comments. Congrats to all ten winners!

Who had the best predictions?

Today is the big day--Thick As Thieves is released in paperback!

You're also in for a real treat here at [livejournal.com profile] sounis. Courtesy of HarperCollins, we give you an exclusive video of Megan Whalen Turner answering fan questions! Anna, of EpicReads, asks all the things we want to know, questions like How did you write a character like Attolia? and When did you know that snake Nahuseresh was already married?

BTW, Anna is also Shoe Girl, who decoupaged a lovely pair of pumps with sentences from a beloved copy of QoA.

A huge thanks to HarperCollins for providing us with the maps for the giveaway and an exclusive on this video!

I was looking at HarperCollins website and came across these fantastic blurbs from some of my other favorite authors: Laini Taylor, Leigh Bardugo, and Joelle Charbonneau.

“The Queen’s Thief books awe and inspire me. They have the feel of a secret, discovered history of real but forgotten lands. The plot-craft is peerless, the revelations stunning, and the characters flawed, cunning, heartbreaking, exceptional. Megan Whalen Turner’s books have a permanent spot on my favorites shelf, with space waiting for more books to come.”—Laini Taylor, New York Times-bestselling author of the Daughter of Smoke and Bone novels and Strange the Dreamer

"Unforgettable characters, plot twists that will make your head spin, a world rendered in elegant detail—you will fall in love with every page of these stories. Megan Whalen Turner writes vivid, immersive, heartbreaking fantasy that will leave you desperate to return to Attolia again and again."—Leigh Bardugo, #1 New York Times-bestselling author of Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom

"Megan Whalen Turner has constructed a clever world filled with suspense and intrigue and characters that will never be forgotten. Once you dive into the world of the Queen's Thief, prepare to have your life stolen from you until you finish them all." —Joelle Charbonneau, New York Times-bestselling author of the Testing trilogy
