Hi folks. I adore our little [livejournal.com profile] sounis community, but I wrote about some of my concerns with Live Journal a while back and have been meaning to put together an email list of all you wonderful sounisians, in case something happens to LJ and we need to regroup.

Here's what I'm thinking. [livejournal.com profile] ninedaysaqueen and I will keep a spreadsheet with you all's LJ user names and email addresses, and I can promise you we won't ever use these email address except to maintain contact with you if LJ ceases to exist.

If you'd like to be included, you can send me an email at checkers65477 AT yahoo.com (obviously, add the @ in there). Or, if you prefer, message your email address to me here on LJ.

And, remember, we have a Dreamwidth backup of the sounis site. Bookmark it, and if we ever need a new home, we can migrate over there and still have all the old posts.

Hi everyone. I'm a bit of a worrier. I don't forsee Livejournal going dark or drastically changing, but since LJ is Russian-owned, I have downloaded the entire [livejournal.com profile] sounis site to Dreamwidth as a backup. Bookmark it, in case [livejournal.com profile] sounis was to suddenly disappear. I'll keep up with regular transfers, to keep the Dreamwidth current.

And The Conspiracy Room is a different platform, so keep a bookmark for it, too: http://www.chatzy.com/339217442899

Just a little background. Although LJ was created in America, it was sold to a Russian media company in 2007 and in 2016-2017 migrated to servers located in Russia. The LJ Terms of Service are in line with Russian law, which caused some previous LJ users to migrate to other social media platforms. It all hit home for me last year when I had to pay for my own persomal paid account in rubles.

For years, our mods and members looked for better sites that still allowed for the depth of posts/comments/discussion offered by LJ. The trend now is in more fast-paced, short posts that can be reblogged, rather than longer posts that can be created by and commented on by ALL members of a community. And convincing everyone to go create a login and move to another side would be impossible. So, we've stayed with LJ.

With the recent invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army, I felt the need to tell you all this. Politics have never been allowed on [livejournal.com profile] sounis (except for the politics of the little peninsula!) and so I'm not going to comment more, except to state my sympathy for and solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

Over the past few years, LJ has censored the content of some journals and limited free expression. In case LJ might see fit to change or delete American-based blogs, I've been doing an occasional backup of the [livejournal.com profile] sounis site to Dreamwidth. I refreshed the backup today, so it's all there on https://queensthief.dreamwidth.org/

Unless someone has a better idea, we'll continue to use [livejournal.com profile] sounis as is, and thank you to those who have reached out to me about LJ and being dilligent about backups. Feel free to chime in and comment about any of this!

I've been an official part of this fandom since 2009 (I lurked for a while before that), and more good things have come of it than I could ever have imagined. (Thank you, MWT.)

I hope [livejournal.com profile] an_english_girl doesn't mind me saying this, but her friendship is one of those good things. We've become transatlantic pen-pals with a tradition of exchanging fan fics on birthdays and gifts at Christmas. :) This year she gifted me (in addition to our usual trade of reading material) bee earrings, and I sent her goat socks! So fun.

Anyway, just wanted to give Sounis a shout-out, and thank you all for the conversation, kindness, humor, and general goodness you've generated via mutual love of books! The QT fandom is really special.

In keeping with the end-of-year theme, I've copied this questionnaire from Tumblr, in case anyone wants to share some of their bookish highlights for 2019! Feel free to pick and choose, or answer all of them!

Happy new year, Sounis! May your book collection increase (and with it your shelving space) in the new decade!

From Greenwillow Books on twitter:

"Megan Whalen Turner & why she's not telling. (Shout-out to the Sounis community!)"

Read it here. (Contains mild spoilers for Thick as Thieves)

Hey, everyone! Lady Jane and I have beek kicking (see icon) around ideas to keep the activity on [livejournal.com profile] sounis going, while doing all we can to spread the love of the Queen's Thief books all over social media. We think cross-posting news and media is the way to go, since there are so many platforms out there used by so many different people. Although a few years ago everyone was using just a few sites, it seems like now there are lots of different favorites.

[livejournal.com profile] dannybailey has come up with some great ideas--more to come from her (hopefully) later. In the meantime, if you are a Tumblr user, please follow our QT-related blogs:

eddis-attolia-sounis.tumblr.com

ninedaysaqueen.tumblr.com

I know lots of you have Tumblr accounts. Please feel free to cross post any Tumblr QT news/fanart here on LJ, or cross post any of our insanity on your own Tumblr pages. And if you leave a comment with your Tumblr site, we'll follow you, too.

If you all have other ideas about how to use other platforms to talk about the books, we'd love to hear them.

Here's Seanan McGuire's keynote address at the Pike's Peak Writer's Conference.

I think y'all might enjoy this.

I had so much fun during the character chat, that I thought it was worth it to pay ten bucks in order to save the full transcript. I do think it's a pretty sneaky way for Chatzy to get money. Honestly, it is better than ads though. Can you imagine being forced to watch a commercial for toilet paper before you are allowed to enter the chat room? Bleh.

Anyway, Livejournal won't let me paste the chat directly into this post, saying that it is too large. So I made a google doc and changed the settings so that anyone can see it, google doc users or not. Let me know if you can't access the link. There is a fun surprise ending (some of you are already aware of it though.)

Elizabeth Moon collection out for Nook:

http://e-moon60.livejournal.com/473723.html

Per the author, it's also been out on amazon for a while. There's no print version yet, but it's coming.

Not to be outdone, Tanya Huff calls and ups the ante, with 2 e-collections:

Yay!

If or when the print versions come out, I'm definitely buying them. I prefer squee! that I can love, squeeze, and take home.

Author Jim Hines gave the keynote address at the Surrey International Writers’ Conference recently. He said lots of things I suspect most of us would agree with. His notes are here, along with links to the video on youtube:

The only thing he forgot was the "not telling" t-shirt.

(I'm new to the comm, so I hope this is allowed. Mods, feel free to delete if it's not.)

As far as I know, I'm the only QT fan signed up. Between Gen and Helen, Costis and Aris, etc etc, the series is filled with great friendships so go forth and fic/draw, good Sounisians!

Sounis has 700 members!  Woohoo.

To celebrate, how about you introduce yourself if you haven't done so yet?  Maybe a short comment about yourself, how you found the books, which is your favorite, etc.  Anything you want.  Those who have been around awhile, feel free to re-introduce yourselves, if you'd like to.

Since this is off topic, the mods can feel free to delete this.

I just thought that I would spread the word that [livejournal.com profile] help_japan are holding auctions right now to raise money for the tsunami/earthquake relief.

There are a lot of good auctions, and I myself have made the following offers.

I'm offering to make 6 icons
The offer is here

And one chibi doll
The offer is here

There is a lot of neat things being offered, so I strongly recommend to check it out and feel free to offer something yourself. Let's see how much money we can raise. ^_^

A reminder

[identity profile] checkers65477.livejournal.com
As the publication date for A Conspiracy of Kings draws nearer and advance copies are beginning to circulate, please remember to use SPOILER WARNINGS and LJ-CUTS when discussing the book, as a courtesy to those who haven't read it and want to remain spoiler-free.

It's best to err on the side of caution, which means no information from the new book should be displayed on the main Sounis page. Those who want to read the info can click on the LJ-cut to get to the details, and others can remain blissfully in the dark until they are able to snag a copy of their own.

Edited to add: Kelly had a great idea--you may want to say if your post is mild, medium or maximum as far as level of spoilers are concerned.

Instructions on how to make an LJ-cut can be found here.

Thanks!

can you tell them i'm not posting  anymore?  i will still read more than i should, but i was prophetic when i said, lo  these many months ago, that if i started posting in lj i wasn't going to get any work done.

also, there are other people who post anonymously now and i don't want  there to be any confusion about who is me and who is not

The Thief got mentioned on [livejournal.com profile] booklisters today! Once again, proof that someone besides us has read MWT!

I tried to hold back from complete fangirling, but it might have shown throw in the vehemence with which I corrected their spelling. O sigh.

Has anyone else run into (or made their own) MWT fans lately? I feel as though it's been a rather good season for that, on my end.

ETA: Also, anyone who is looking for another community to procrastination, while, and waste with should give [livejournal.com profile] booklisters a look. It's been dead in the past, but has been picking up lately (and goodness knows Sounisians would make it lively). There's an app to get in, but it's just a list of your top 15 favorite books, and then you have to justify your choices/answer questions that members ask. Um, Ro, if I'm not allowed to say this kind of thing, I will take my ETA down! XD

Finally...

Alright, I finally gave in and created a livejournal account so I can post. I've spent time here at work doing it, yes, I'll probably get fired. Oh well. Jessica, the pressure is on! I believe you may be the only other holdout.

I wanted to remind everyone (and tell newbies) to please not post spoilers on this main page until our fearless leader Rowana has read KOA. Curse you, Amazon! After that I have MANY questions for all of you.

And the first is this - which I'm going to ask now. Did KOA seem almost TOO incomprehensible and ambiguous in order to hide what was going on? For example, Gen at the temple, which we talked about in another thread. I had to work really hard to make sense of some things and that might keep many readers from understanding the entire story, especially since the book is marketed as YA. I felt that way, to some degree, with QOA, too, but this was HARD. Whatcha think?
