Today, MWT posted on her tumblr feed: "The Thief was published twenty years, four months, and 23 days ago. Twenty years, four month and *21* days ago, people started asking me for a map. The wait is almost over. My editor says she is sending it to me tomorrow and I will post it here."

Later in the day, she posted the image below. Is this the map we've been waiting for (It is not completely clear to me)? It looks AH-MAYZ-ING.

Artist: Maxime Plasse

So, the inscription on the side says (to the best of my understanding), "This map of Eddis, Attolia, and Sounis was prepared for Her Highness Gitta Kingsdaughter by her tutor, Tykus Namikus for her reference while reading the books of the Queen's Thief."

So....if this IS the official map...who is Gitta? Royalty, obviously, but from which family/country? DISCUSS.

I love the song Hallelujah and especially like the Rufus Wainwright version. The lyrics have always reminded me a bit of Gen.  A Rufus Wainwright song came on my phone's mix today and I glanced at the album cover and look at what I noticed:

Things that make you go Hmmm... )

(Ok, I flipped Rufus' picture and WHERE IS YOUR SWORD but still. Oh, and your wife's hand. Where is that?)

From MWT's Tumblr:

meganwhalenturner:

Somebody in a message a while back referred to my “No Spoilers” policy and seeing Seanan McGuire’s post reminded me of it.  I want to clarify–I don’t have a No Spoilers Policy.  I have a Not Telling policy.

I’m Not Telling what’s in the next book.

I’m Not Telling why something was in the last book.

I am Not Telling what things mean.

I am Not Telling anything I haven’t already put on the page.

What I hope is  …  I am Not Telling You What to Think.

This isn’t an easy policy to stick to. I’m always tempted to tell people what I think (about anything, really, don’t let me get started) and I do lapse, especially in small group settings that involve too much caffeine or in some cases, alcohol, and some day when readers have had time to make up their own minds, I expect I’ll loosen up about this. (Like Ray Bradbury, in 40 years I am going to tell you that The Thief was really all about the evils of television.)  I don’t have this policy because it’s the moral high ground.  It’s a personal thing.  I like to make up my own mind about what I read– I want to offer my readers the same space.  I never want something I say to get in the way of you creating the story you want in your own head.

Like, we knew that already. Before she came up with a new book, dropped in on a bunch of over-excited chatting fangirls or set up the chance for us to combine Art with QT :)

But here is the ultimate evidence of it. Megan's letter to all of us:

The ARC contest

I hope everyone who entered is happy with the way the contest turned out. I know I am. This is roughly how it worked.

People emailed me a link to their posts. The entries were listed in order of submission. I used random.org to generate a number and the entry that corresponded with that number was the winner. (I think that if I do this again I’ll try using random.org’s Third Party Draw system so that people can confirm that they are entered in the contest.)

I wanted a contest where everyone who wanted to participate could. I didn’t want to have to judge it—I hate judging and I am terrible at it–and I wanted everyone to make art if they felt like it. I was thinking more about community than competition. That said …

Wow, you guys. Really.

I don’t want to seem maudlin here, but I’m a little verklempt.

There were so many entries. Photos, paintings, playlists. Dolls. Yarn. Calligraphy. Songs. Figurines. Someone embroidered a map of Eddis and now I can’t find it, but I will, and when I do, I will reblog it. I did not expect this contest to be a data set for the many ways we interact with a text, but I’m excited that it is. People wanted to win an ARC to share it with their friends, their siblings, their Moms. People who didn’t even want to enter the contest wrote just to say nice things! (Ha, I entered you anyway.) People were kind about my mole god drawing. People were willing to share something of themselves with others they’ve never met.

I am serious when I say that I am honored to have you as readers. A little less serious when I say, whoah, good thing it was a random draw or I’d be mailing out hundreds of ARCs right now. Thank you for the submissions. Thank you for the reblogging. Thanks for the community. You guys are the best.

From MWT's Tumblr page:

"I moved to Germany. I'll be staying for the winter in a beautiful old guesthouse, built in 1911, with gorgeous windows and pretty defective wifi."

This is kind of what I always imagined famous authors did. Looks like a fantastic place to write a book!

The long awaited transcript from the chat we had on the 16th. Sorry, this took so long! As I was copying it, Chatzy added many lines of computer coding for some reason. I had to tediously go back through hours of chat log and delete all of that, which is why this took so long. Curse you, Chatzy!

In which...

We fangirl Thick As Thieves.

Reprobates overexcitedly ask questions at the same time that do not get answered.

We fail at explaning the Overdrive app.

YA vs. Middle Grade

Bookish talks about her interview with MWT.

Lady Jane devours every single last muffin!

Please, remember that this was a SPOILER chat, so if you don't want to know anything about the new book other then the cover and release date, cover your ears.

Even LJ deemed this too long! We will have to have a chat again sometime soon.

*Fixed link issue. The internet made it vanish on me. XD

So, MWT posted "Not actually done yet..." on her tumblr - http://meganwhalenturner.tumblr.com/post/151411676643/not-actually-done-yet

Is this what we've been waiting for?

Speculations?

Since we got all the covers in quick succession, I'm hoping we get whatever is coming next tomorrow!

Sort of like "Megan Does California" but in a bookish, literary way.  Megan is giving us details about two meetups, one an organized panel open to the public, and the second a smaller You-Have-to-Know-the-Secret-Sounis-Handshake kind of one. Or wear a forked red beard. Or something.  Use your imagination.

Details:

I’m going to be at Kepler’s Books in Menlo Park on Monday, 29 June at 7:00 pm with
Elizabeth Fama, Stephanie Keuhn, Rebecca Hahn and perhaps Tamara Stone Ireland.
and I’d love to see Sounisians there.  It’s going to be a bit of a cocktail with a little
bit of a panel and a lot of standing around chatting with whoever shows up.  In that
way, it’s very much like our usual get-togethers, but it might be more organized and chatting
might be more limited than usual for our Mini-Thief Cons. I’ve advertised it on my tumblr and
I will try to post about it at least a couple more times between now and then.

However.

I am also going to be at an old school Sounis Meet Up with a couple of Bay Area
librarians and fans in the Yerba Buena Gardens right across from Moscone Center where
they are holding ALA at 2:00 pm on Saturday June 27.

Kepler's Books
1010 El Camino Real, Menlo Park, CA 94025
(650) 324-4321

Yerbe Buena Gardens
750 Howard St, San Francisco, CA 94103
(415) 820-3550

Who can be there? Go, people, go! Sadly, I will be thousands miles away. What about you?
[identity profile] puppeteergirl.livejournal.com

I had so much fun during the character chat, that I thought it was worth it to pay ten bucks in order to save the full transcript. I do think it's a pretty sneaky way for Chatzy to get money. Honestly, it is better than ads though. Can you imagine being forced to watch a commercial for toilet paper before you are allowed to enter the chat room? Bleh.

Anyway, Livejournal won't let me paste the chat directly into this post, saying that it is too large. So I made a google doc and changed the settings so that anyone can see it, google doc users or not. Let me know if you can't access the link. There is a fun surprise ending (some of you are already aware of it though.)

Excerpt from CoK:

Sounis turned to the magus. "Did you know?"

"That he was relentless?" The magus finished his question. "Yes. That he had this in mind, no. I did not realize that he disliked the ambassador so much."

"Melheret has a reputation as one of the best swordsmen in the Mede court," a soldier informed them, having overheard. "They say he trained the former ambassador, Nahuseresh."

"Ah," said the magus, understanding at once. "I see that he means to be prepared if he meets him again."

"Surely that's unlikely," said Sounis.

"I don't think unlikely means to him what it does to the rest of us," said the magus.

Sorry magus, I'm starting to agree with Sophos.

Let's do some math, folks!
The Thief 1996
Five years later: QoA 2001
Five years later: KoA 2006
Four years later: CoK 2010

As of yesterday, it has been five years since CoK was released. I think we're due.

Yet, no news. Interviews from MWT have dwindled. Sounis has grown quiet. The majority of posts by its members tend to be about other fandoms, or asking for reading suggestions.  Because we have NOTHING to read.

Will Eugenides ever get his revenge? #watchoutpointybeard #swordskillz

Will the Eddisians escape the sacred mountain in time? #ohnolava #zipcodechange

Will we ever find out why the woman in the kitchen still includes sand in certain recipes?  #what'swrongwiththegravy #i'mnothungry

Is the poor elephant doomed to wait ten years before he is stolen from a nameless intimidator? #impatientpachyderm #omghowcanistealthat

Will I ever break this cycle of despair when I read those fatal words, "'You gave me the gun.' They both laughed." and realize I just finished the book, with nothing new in sight? #whatnow

I know, I know. Stop whining and go to bed.

This has been a pity party by puppeteergirl. #icandoanythingiwant #smashinginkpots

Proceed with your attempted encouragements or your commiserations below.

Eeee!

Megan posted this on her Tumblr, and it was sqee-worthy enough to link to.  Hand written notes!  For King of Attolia! Costis and Gen on the castle roof!

Maybe there is still hope for the wedding night scene those "deleted scenes" we've been crying for all these years. :)

Oh, you lucky, lucky Ohioans!  From MWT:

I've been invited to participate in Sherman Alexie's Bookseller for a Day program.  That means I go to my local bookseller and hang out for a couple of hours (Sherman will not be there, sadly.)  I'll be at Loganberry books in Shaker Heights on either the Friday or the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  Could you ask Sounis if there are any locals who might make it one day, but not the other?

Also, I am going to be doing a three hour long book fair at the Barnes and Noble in Woodmere (next door to Cleveland) on November 22 from 7-10 pm with Cinda Williams Chima, Rebecca Barnhouse, Tricia Springstubb, Rae Carson and Shelley Pearsall.  We intend to have a very good time!

Megan

So, two things:

  1. The Shaker Heights meetup--is either Friday 11/29 or Saturday 11/30 better for anyone?

  2. Friday 11/22--who can make it to Woodmere to see Megan and those other awesome authors?

Lucky Ohio people!!!

First, a reminder.  Megan will be at the Mysterious Galaxy bookstore in San Diego on Saturday, July 13 and afterwards will wander down to the Starbucks next door to meet up with any available fans.  Read all about it here.

And Megan needs our help!  From MWT:

The people at Mysterious Galaxy have said that they will set up a table of reading recommendations for Thief fans while I am there.  Can you ask Sounis what they would recommend that they think Mysterious Galaxy might have in stock?  They specialize in Mystery and Fantasy and Science Fiction, so they are likely to have all the Bujold for instance, but not our favorites like Sutcliff and Aiken and probably no Diana Wynne Jones.

So, ideas?  What are your favorite titles that other Gen lovers might like?
[identity profile] checkers65477.livejournal.com
Planning on being in San Diego this summer?  Around July13, maybe?  Boy, are you in luck!

From MWT:

I'm looking to set up another Thief Con if anyone is interested in joining me at Mysterious Galaxy in
San Diego at Noonish on Saturday July 13.  I will hang out at the store and then wander over to the Starbucks next
door.  Anybody ready to sign up to listen to me not answering questions?  I won't be able to stay too long as
the beach will be calling to me . . . . "Megan . . . come try to surf so I can watch you wipe out!"  But I am sure I
can not answer one or two questions at least.

Who is in?
[identity profile] checkers65477.livejournal.com
See Rosie's post, below!  And this just in:

I am going to be guest of honor at the Life, The Universe, and Everything Conference at
Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, in February 2013.  Are there any Sounisians
interested in a ThiefCon?

Details are still sketchy, but more info will be coming soon, I hope.

I was just wondering... Why doesn't the Sounis community have a Twitter account? Or at the very least use a hashtag? It's so much fun dissecting parts of the books in posts, but sometimes whatever I want to squeal over is too short to warrant a post (even this idea is pushing it).

So can we make a Twitter account or even just decide on a hashtag we can use to communicate with each other? Or is there one out there that I don't know about?
